Arrest Of Homeless Connecticut Woman For Enrolling Son In School Illegally Sparks Debate

A Connecticut mother who says she wanted to give her son a better education will be arraigned on Wednesday on charges for enrolling the 6-year-old in another town, sparking outrage and support from people nationwide.

Tanya McDowell, a 33-year-old homeless woman whose last known address was in Bridgeport, Conn, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny for allegedly stealing $15,686 from Norwalk schools. Prosecutors allege that figure is the value of her son's education at Norwalk's Brookside Elementary School between the time he was illegally enrolled in January and McDowell's arrest on April 14. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.

  2. 11:22 so you approve of stealing? If you think it's such a grand idea why don't you pony up the money for them? Then she wouldn't be stealing from the taxpayers.

  3. I'm willing to bet she is black and the white people want to teach those uppity blacks that Norwalk schools ain't gonna be having no people of color ruining their system....nothing like putting poor people in prison (for trying to get their children an good education) to keep them down. Been working pretty good for the last 50 years....

  4. 11:44 How about all of the illegal immigrants that are stealing an education from the American tax payer but are treated with special privilege? This is a double standard.

  5. Even if this woman lived in a home in that district, chances are she would fall in the lowest income bracket and wouldn't pay any taxes anyway. How many people have children in schools and don't pay a dime for it because they are low income or on public assistance?

  6. If a child wants to go to school then he or she should be able to attend school. The fact that anyone is going after this woman for wanting to educate her child is disgusting at all levels. I am not for illegals taking advantage of the system but a childs education comes first and foremost. Homelessness is not a crime and it is not a choice i have personally been there in my life. But the child should not have to suffer or be left behind over something as trivial as this

  7. bottom line is they are taking resources away from the people who are citizens of this country!
if you are here illegally and are not entitled to it then you are stealing! plain and simple for all bleeding heart simpletons out there.

  8. At least the simpletons can read...the story mentioned NOT A THING about her being an illegal immigrant. Seemed to imply that she was an American. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And probably the wrong color, too. And after she goes to prison, how much is it going to cost to take care of the child? People rob 7-11's at gunpoint and aren't threatened with prison, but try to get your child an education? Oh HELL NO!!! Seems she would have been better off starving the kid and pimping him out....thats only probation and a small fine.

  9. imclain youre very sensitive on this race deal arent you?you fail to realize this country gives more and protects people of color more than the "so called" majority.people of color commit hate crimes on a daily basis ,but for some reason its excusable.they have been given every opportunity to succeed and in a lot of cases get a free ride ,but still break the law and abuse the system.
