Immigration Front: The Great Wall Of Mexico

Under cover of media darkness, Mexico has been building a wall on its southern border with Guatemala, ostensibly to stop the flow of drugs. Yet Mexican Superintendent of Tax Administration Raul Diaz admits the wall will also prevent the free passage of illegal aliens.

Some 500,000 illegals sneak into Mexico annually. Compared to all Mexicans currently living illegally in American cities, taking full advantage of the benefits stubbornly preserved for them by bankrupt city, state and governments, Mexico's illegal influx is a mere pittance, but it's enough to anger opponents. Still, Guatemala doesn't want its escape hatch closed. As Vice President Rafael Espada opined, "The walls are not the solution to the problems."

The Catholic Church entered the fray quickly in the person of Fr. Francisco Pellizari, an Italian working in Mexico with illegals. In an interesting, if somewhat daft, line of reasoning, Pellizari claims, "The dramatic increase in the cost of 'polleros' (human traffickers) and the corruption of the authorities is the result of the walls the United States plans to build and has built along the border. [The] results will be the same" in Guatemala. More to the point is the mordida, Mexican slang for "bribe": in the "small" sense, the bribe given a Mexican official to look the other way; but in the larger sense, it's the corruption endemic in the Mexican government.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon as yet hasn't commented. However, when Arizona's SB 1070 passed, Calderon blew a gasket, denouncing the law as an invitation "to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement" -- each one an attribute that Mexico's immigration laws exhibit. Calderon's own government will bar outsiders "found to be physically or mentally unhealthy ... economic burdens on society" or anyone who shows contempt for national sovereignty. Being in Mexico illegally is punishable by two years in a Mexican prison.
As we've seen time and time again, the guiltiest are always the first to point fingers. Oh, Mexico! Thy name is Hypocrisy!

BREAKING NEWS: Delmar FD Called To Delmar Elementary

Fire Crews from DFD were sent to Delmar Elementary as there is confirmation of heavy smoke. Salisbury News has also learned, (at the moment) there are two children unaccounted for. More to come.....

Please update your post about Delmar Elementary to reflect the following information: There is no fire at Delmar Elementary. Maintenance workers accidentally set off a fire alarm and the fire department responded. All students at the school are accounted for.

Salisbury News continues to stand by our original Post. My Grandson, (who just arrived home almost 30 minutes late) was told by his Teacher it was a drill. Yeah, OK, they ran a drill at 2:45 PM, I don't think so. I have sources who state that there was smoke when the DFD arrived and a maintenance worker set off some insulation while doing some maintenance. We'll keep researching this but the person from the BOE who sent me the above message doesn't seem to want to reply to my reply. Hmmmmmm?

Full-Body Scan Technology Deployed In Street-Roving Vans

As the privacy controversy around full-body security scans begins to simmer, it’s worth noting that courthouses and airport security checkpoints aren’t the only places where backscatter x-ray vision is being deployed. The same technology, capable of seeing through clothes and walls, has also been rolling out on U.S. streets.

American Science & Engineering, a company based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has sold U.S. and foreign government agencies more than 500 backscatter x-ray scanners mounted in vans that can be driven past neighboring vehicles to see their contents, Joe Reiss, a vice president of marketing at the company told me in an interview. While the biggest buyer of AS&E’s machines over the last seven years has been the Department of Defense operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, Reiss says law enforcement agencies have also deployed the vans to search for vehicle-based bombs in the U.S.

“This product is now the largest selling cargo and vehicle inspection system ever,” says Reiss.

Here’s a video of the vans in action.

AFP-Maryland Demands Apology From Maryland Democratic Party

MDP Field Organizer purposely disrupts peaceful rally, harasses attendees-

ANNAPOLIS – The Maryland chapter of Americans for Prosperity is demanding an apology from the Maryland Democratic Party after an employee and several other cohorts attempted to hijack a “November Is Coming” Bus Tour rally in Salisbury on Thursday where the voting record of Rep. Frank Kratovil was to be discussed.  Chuck Cook, Field Organizer for the Maryland Democratic Party, burst into the restaurant, disrupted the peaceful rally, and harassed several attendees with video cameras.  Video of the harassment and disruption of the event can be seen HERE (video courtesy of http://www.monoblogue.us/).
“I guess the Maryland Democratic Party doesn’t believe in our right to peaceful assembly,” said AFP-Maryland state director Dave Schwartz.  “These folks, one of whom is an MDP employee and another dressed in a chicken costume, came to our event to deliberately disrupt and silence our message of economic freedom.  Members of AFP-Maryland felt as if their rights were violated.  We demand an apology from the Party for this harassment and a statement of re-commitment to the 1st Amendment of the Constitution to make sure this does not happen again.”
The event in question was part of Americans for Prosperity’s national “November Is Coming” bus tour.  As Rep. Frank Kratovil attempts to fashion himself as an “independent” member of Congress through television ads, we will continue to educate citizens about his votes for the failed economic Stimulus package that did not create enough jobs for the money, as well as his vote for a cap-and-trade energy tax that would dramatically increase utility costs for residents in the district.

Jim Ireton Defends Chuck Cook …

… GETS SNOTTY WITH CONSTITUENT

Regardless of how bad you behave, if you’re a lefty you can always count on your lefty friends rushing to your defense.  After being notified by a Salisbury resident that he (the constituent) was none too pleased with Chuck Cook’s disruptive behavior at yesterday’s AFP event, Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton fired off a snotty, and untrue reply.

Ireton attempted to deflect the constituent’s complaint by claiming that AFP was also guilty of past sins – such as hanging Frank Kratovil in effigy.  Not only was this a poorly done “bait and switch” attempt, it isn’t true.  How do we know?  Jimmy’s pal Chuck Cook says so.

Chuck’s not a bad guy.  I’m willing to give him the benefit of doubt and say that he probably just got carried away.  However, there is no way that this behavior was acceptable nor can Ireton justify defending it – even if he did so with the truth.  Which he DID NOT!

Blame The Wall Street Bankers And Corporate CEOs For The "Jobless" Recovery

Now that President Obama's "recovery summer" has fizzled and it's clear we are in for a "jobless" recovery, it is worth examining who bears the responsibility for this predicament -- near 10% unemployment (with millions more so discouraged they have given up looking for work and are not even counted anymore) despite a trillion-dollar stimulus. The manufacturing jobs which were once the backbone of the American economy and fueled the job growth that pulled America out of prior recessions just aren't here anymore. In the name of "free trade," millions of those jobs got shipped overseas to unregulated markets where cheap labor is abundant, environmental restrictions are lax and working conditions are abysmal -- making the costs of corporate production there much lower.

Who bears the responsibility for this structural impairment of the American economy? The Wall Street banks and the multinational corporations, along with those who have done their bidding in Washington for the past few decades are responsible. The Republican politicians that these financial interests own -- and the corporate Democrats they have "seduced" with campaign money -- have been their willing instruments. While millions of ordinary Americans cannot find a decent job and our nation's economy sputters, the Wall Street bankers still make gobs of money, the multinational corporations are as profitable as ever and their political friends in Washington sit on top of stuffed campaign coffers.

Capital is liquid. Without restrictions money flows to where it can earn the highest returns, regardless of any burden its flow inflicts on those left behind, or the hardship inflicted upon the humans who will toil to create the return on that newly placed capital. If a corporation can build a factory in a Third World country where workers are not organized, wages are low and the cost of worker safety and environmental protections are nil and still sell its products here and in other wealthy countries, it will do so. The executives who decide to take capital to remote locations suffer no personal hardship from the fact that a factory that could have been built in America won't be -- or a factory that was in America will be closed and replaced by a Third World site.

This is equally true of Wall Street bankers. It makes no difference to them if a factory in Iowa is closed and the lives of the well-paid workers there are destroyed so that their multinational corporate client can build a replacement factory in Bangladesh. The rapacious bankers pocket the same huge fees for raising the capital required to fund the replacement factory regardless of where it is built, the new workers are located or what happens to the American workers left in the dust. Over two million American manufacturing jobs have been lost to overseas sites in recent years. No one can count how many jobs that could have been created here have not been.

Wi Hi Could Be In Lockdown?

There are Police Officers all over the Civic Center and Wi-Hi at this moment. From what I've learned, the Sheriff's Department was trying to serve a warrant and the suspect ran. It's been reported that suspect may have run into the school, but it has not been confirmed.

Both the SPD & WCSO are searching the area and hopefully we'll get all the details shortly.

UPDATE: We have just been informed, Wi-Hi is in lock down, at least in the gym. "WIHI School on lockdown in gym"

UPDATE: The suspect IS in custody and there was NO gun involved. We're told the Gang Unit was chasing him.

UPDATE-- The police have recovered a gun magazine and have located A weapon in the car they pulled over. They are continuing to search WI HI for a possible firearm.

ALL RISE

Last night Mayor Jim Ireton met with the Camden Neighborhood Association to discuss the Safe Streets program. Folks, I have to tell you, after listening to the Mayor explain the program in detail, anyone stating it's not a great program is nuts.

My hat is tipped to those who put this program together. Considering the Slumlords weren't present, there was absolutely no disruption and Jim was able to explain it from beginning to end.

All to often, (even I'm guilty of such) we sit on the outside and criticize the intent of such projects. We get comments that come in and completely change the scope of the original Post and the next thing we know, who knows who is telling the truth.

My hope is as follows. I want to ask the Mayor if he'd be willing to sit down for an interview referencing this matter and explain to the public just what it's all about. With any luck he'll agree and everyone can become better informed.

GOP Unknown Within Striking Range Of Barney Frank

Sean Bielat, the Republican candidate for Congress in Massachusetts' 4th District, has had just one conversation with his Democratic opponent, Rep. Barney Frank.

It was in August, at a parade in New Bedford. "I went up to introduce myself and said, 'Nice to meet you,'" Bielat recalls. "He said, 'I wish I could say the same, but you've made this personal. You've been attacking me.' Then he turned and walked away."

Bielat remembers thinking that was a little odd, since at that very moment Frank's Web site featured plenty of attacks on Bielat. But the brief encounter set the tone for what has become an increasingly contentious campaign. The nervousness plaguing Democrats nationwide has touched even Frank, a 14-term incumbent who hasn't faced a serious challenger in years.

Bielat is 35 years old, a Marine who spent four years on active duty and is now a major in the Reserve. He's a graduate of Georgetown University with a master's from Harvard and an MBA from Wharton. He's devoted a good portion of his professional life to manufacturing the high-tech robots that defuse improvised explosive devices in Iraq and Afghanistan. In other words, he's a serious man.

Salaries Of OC City Manager, Police Captains, Firefighters

Joe:

I sent you the article of what OC officials are currently collecting in salaries;

1. Dennis Dare - $184,000
2. (4) Police captains - $123,000
3. (4) Fire Marshalls - $115,000

I knew the system has been out-of-control for over a decade and have advised for everyone to stay clear of the place in doing business with these entities.

Just as in Colquitt County California - the residents of OC should be outraged. These officials should be rounded-up immediately and incarcerated.

The Good News About The Economy? It's The Bad News

If you don't feel bad enough about the economy, spend a little time with Joseph Stiglitz.

The Nobel-winning economist spoke to a gathering of business editors and writers in New York Thursday evening and offered little encouragement about an economy struggling to gain momentum two years after the near-meltdown of the financial sector.

"The good news about this recession is that it's going to last a long time," he offered in one effort to provide at least a bit of gallows humor about the economy's structural problems.

Stiglitz is a strong advocate for more government stimulus of the economy and thinks the long-lasting nature of the slowdown means there is time for a new program to be well-crafted and have an impact.

Stiglitz acknowledged that the economy is out of recession "in a narrow sense," as determined by a panel of economists that sets business cycle dates. But he said the slow pace of job growth, coupled with a huge overhang of housing supply, means the nation's economic pain could linger into 2012.

Chad Ochocinco Cereal Screw Up

Talk about a wrong number.
What was intended as an effort endorsed by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco to raise money for a children's charity instead directs consumers to a phone sex line, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Thursday.
Boxes of Chad Ochocinco Cereal, a limited edition offering featuring the Bengals star's likeness, include a phone number printed on them, 1-800-HELP-FTC, that connects callers to a seductive-sounding message that asks for a debit or credit card and states: "You must be 18 or older to get into this party, baby!" instead of the charity Feed The Children.
According to the Enquirer, the correct number to donate to the charity is 1-888-HELP-FTC.
Boxes of the cereal were being removed from Kroger store shelves Thursday morning, the Enquirer reported.
The low fat, honey nut, toasted oat cereal -- available for $5 per box -- went on sale earlier this month at Kroger stores.
Robert Bailey, president of Rosenhaus Sports, which represents Ochocinco, told the newspaper the charity gave the supplier the wrong number.
“Feed the Children inadvertently provided the producers of the cereal box with an ‘800’ number instead of the correct number with an ‘888’ exchange," he said in a statement. "We greatly regret the mistake and the trouble it has caused, but Chad himself was in no way involved in this error."
Ochocinco told WCPO-TV Channel 9 on Wednesday the number was clearly a mistake for which he was not responsible. He said he is confident the Pittsburgh company behind the cereal, PBL Sports, will fix the problem.

Authorities Plan To Trawl Phone Calls And E Mails For Signs Of “Resentment Toward Government”

Do you resent the government for enforcing Obamacare or raising your taxes? Write about it in an email or talk about it on the phone and you could be placed under surveillance as a potential terrorist, if frightening new technology being shopped to law enforcement agencies is implemented.

Forget pre-crime and get ready for face-crime, Big Brother is set to unleash a new wave of shockingly invasive and Orwellian technology on the American people if a recent symposium in Hamburg New York is anything to go by. Federal agencies, police departments and others were all in attendance to see a demonstration of a system that trawls phone conversations, emails and instant messages to detect “resentment toward government,” alerting authorities to potential “terrorists” who are then placed under surveillance.

The technology was demonstrated to law enforcement officials, mental health professionals, and military representatives at a recent International First Responder-Military Symposium held at Hilbert College.

“A Swiss professor working with a Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientist who heads the Mind Machine Project there outlined how this program operates through computerized scanning of phone calls and electronic messages sent through e-mail and social networking mechanisms,” reports the Buffalo News.

The system works by detecting “resentment in conversations through measurements in decibels and other voice biometrics,” more specifically the emotional spikes that characterize “hatred and deep resentment toward government.”

“As for written transmissions scrutinized by the computer program, it can detect the same patterns of fixation on specified subjects,” states the report.

Tea Party Coloring Book Publisher Says He's Getting Death Threats

The author-publisher of "The Tea Party Coloring Book for Kids" says he has received death threats over its publication.

Wayne Bell, publisher of Clayton, Mo.-based Really Big Coloring Books, said in an interview with CBS that his $3.59 coloring book is not political. But some critics think the book was designed for politically conservative adults, and not for children.

"We're not really making a political statement," Bell told CBS, adding that his company also publishes coloring books on the Rockettes, Cirque du Soleil and President Obama.

Bell told FoxNews.com on Thursday that his office began receiving "odd" phone calls and e-mails five days after the release of the coloring book on Sept. 5. Bell said he did not report those incidents to authorities.

"We don't want to be overly dramatic about what's happening," Bell said. "We just kind of let it slide."

St. John's Univ. Dean Charged With Using Students As 'Slaves'

Disgraced St. John’s University dean, Cecilia Chang, who was charged earlier this month with embezzling over $1 million in donations from the college, was nabbed again today by the FBI and accused using scholarship students as domestic servants.

Chang, 57, allegedly forced students to do her laundry, clean her house, cook and chauffeur her son around.
“Chang threatened the students and placed them in fear that if they refused to perform these personal services they would lose their scholarships and be unable to attend St. John’s,” FBI Special Agent Kenneth Hosey wrote in the arrest warrant.

Chang had four students working seven days a week as her personal valets, one was forced to driver her son to the airport at 3 a.m. Others shoveled snow, took out the garbage and shuttled her to her hair salon, according to court papers.

“[Chang] let me be the housekeeper for her house and give me scholarship,” one scholarship student wrote to the college. “We have three housekeeper before, and she ask us work 122 days per year per person.”

After Chang was fired from the college in June, the terrified exchange student feared she would not be able to attend the school without the dean’s largess.

Obama Set To Unveil Emanuel's Replacement

Chief of staff gears up for next fierce political fight: Chicago mayoral race

President Barack Obama is making official what has been clear for days: Rahm Emanuel, the relentless enforcer of his agenda as White House chief of staff, is resigning . The job Emanuel wants now is mayor of Chicago, where his next fierce political fight awaits.

What Emanuel leaves behind is more than a staff job. It is the most demanding and influential position in the White House — save for Obama's. The person who holds it is entrusted to shape the president's thinking, prioritize his time, manage scores of egos and issues and keep the White House focused on its goals.

Victims And Landlords Negotiated New Domestic Violence Law Protecting Renters

Starting today, domestic violence and sexual assault victims who rent their homes are better protected from future attacks and eviction, thanks to a new law that came out of intense negotiations between representatives of victims and landlords.

The law ensures three basic protections for victims who rent:  They can break their lease -- no matter how long it is -- without penalty if they have a protective order;  they can change their locks for safety reasons; and landlords cannot evict tenants based on being victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse.

The legislation is being hailed by advocates for domestic violence victims as groundbreaking, but it came out of intense negotiations. Del. Cheryl Glenn, the lead sponsor, characterized the negotiations over the terms of the bill between lobbyists for landlords and victims’ advocates as “very difficult, very emotional.”
“Nobody got everything they wanted,” Glenn said.

The Bailout Yearbook: The Stars And The Slackers

With the bailout set to expire this weekend, here are the recipients that have shined -- and here are the ones that have flopped.

After two years and half a trillion dollars, the federal bailout fund is set to expire Oct. 3. After that, the government won't be able to start new programs through the bailout, though it can continue paying money that's already committed.

We've been following every dollar via our Bailout Tracker [1]. But with the end now in sight, we've decided it's time to get a bit nostalgic, take a step back and look at the bailout's recipients and programs that have shined -- and those that have flopped.

First, a Quick Bailout Refresher

In the fall of 2008 as the economy tumbled precipitously, Congress authorized the Treasury Department to spend $700 billion in a financial rescue plan called the Troubled Asset Relief Program [2]. (TARP's spending cap shrank this summer to $475 billion as a result of financial reform.) TARP's largest programs included capital injections [3] into banks, loans to the auto industry [4], direct support to AIG [5] and the government's foreclosure relief [6] efforts, mainly the mortgage modification program [7]. Shortly after TARP, Congress passed a separate housing bill [8] that authorized the rescue of the quasi-governmental housing giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

We've been tracking the aid for every recipient -- from local banks to General Motors. By our count [9], the Treasury has doled out more than $548 billion. Almost half of that -- $238 billion -- has been repaid to the government via interest, dividends, fees or repurchased stock warrants.

Some parts of TARP may be profitable as the government earns money from investments in financial institutions, but over all the program is expected to end up in the red. Because more than half of the funds are still outstanding, the total expense for the bailout remains up for debate. Cost estimates [10] for TARP range from $66 billion (from the Congressional Budget Office) to $127 billion (from the president's Office of Management and Budget).

We Are All Tea Partiers Now

On Feb. 7, 2009, the cover of Newsweek magazine proclaimed, "We Are All Socialists Now." Since then, much has transpired, including the sale of Newsweek (the business entity) to the highest bidder for $1. Now, 1 1/2 years later, a more poignant cover story might be "We Are All Tea Partiers Now."

The Tea Party is the leading edge of a "Great Awakening" in America. In many ways, it appears to have the force and vitality of one of the religious awakenings that have occurred throughout our nation's history. It is more than a populist movement. It is more than a reactionary group expressing voter dissatisfaction and anger. It can't be boiled down to election results. It will not be co-opted neatly by the Republican Party. It is something much, much bigger.

The Tea Party movement represents a resounding declaration of the end of big, overreaching government.

Our nation is in the grip of an overwhelming, seemingly inescapable malaise, not because our government hasn't done enough for us, but because it has tried to do too much. Over the decades, "government" has mutated into "big government," and its weight is killing us. Recent massive efforts to stimulate the economy or save certain sectors of it through increased government intervention and spending, far from helping us, have only added to the fog of uncertainty and oppression.

Washington's presumed role of always knowing what is best for every aspect of our lives is over. One by one, people are waking up and realizing that perhaps they know what is best for themselves, their families, their local communities and their states. The Tea Party movement is not just an expression of disfavor with how things get done in government. It is the promise of a tectonic shift of decentralization and reduction of government.

Kratovil Kronies Krash Tea Party

As noted yesterday, local lefty Chuck Cook and a gaggle of rather rude Young Democrats disrupted Thursday’s AFP November Is Coming event.  We now have pictures (courtesy of Michael Swartz @ MonoBlogue).

While Frank Kratovil wastes billions of your hard earned tax dollars on great programs like Cap & Tax and Obama’s PORKULUS his campaign staff and volunteers have time to disrupt and intimidate hard working citizens who are taking time out of their busy lives to learn how to improve their communities and their country.
Thanks Frank.  Thanks for disrupting our event.  Thanks for having your wannabe thugs claim to be Andy Harris supporters.  Thanks for attempting to tarnish the name of our hometown baseball team.  A special thanks to the Maryland Democratic Party which pays Chuck Cook’s salary.

Tom Miller: Letter To Michael Steele

Mr. Michael Steele
Chairman, Republican National Committee
310 First Street, SE.
Washington, DC. 20003
October 1, 2010

Mr. Steele,

I am personally writing to you in response to the GOP's website question and answer of "Who are the future leaders of the Republican Party? You are - you, the people who make America work".

As an average citizen who is helping to make America work, I see firsthand how the United States of America is being destroyed from within by political correctness, the National debt, illegal immigration and career politicians. I know that the way we are going to save the American way of life is to; reduce government, apply discipline to sound economic values and to restore the Judeo-Christian morals, values and principles that our Country was solidly built upon.

You state that "Gop.com is going to profile future leaders, often people who simply lead by doing". You also note "that the first step is actually up to you".

Mr. Steele, I am answering your call for new leadership. To show my commitment of "leading by doing, while taking that first step“, I have officially registered myself and my principle campaign committee with the Federal Election Committee. I am also presenting common sense solutions for several of our Nations crisis’ including; illegal immigration, health care and the economy/employment.

The next step in your plan is "to work together to be profiled as a future leader of the GOP". I look forward to the challenges and the rewards that await our journey. I will be publishing this letter to show the American people my willingness to work with our National party.

Together, we can give our children an America that is better than was given to us.

God Bless the United States of America,

Thomas J. Miller

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES ECONOMIC IMPACT OF MARYLAND’S MILITARY INSTALLATIONS

Mission Maryland report cites $36 billion impact on state’s economy

ANNAPOLIS, MD  – Governor Martin O’Malley today released Mission Maryland: Measuring Economic Impact of Maryland’s Military Installations and announced that military facilities located here contribute $36 billion to the state’s economy, 7.5% of the total economic activity. The study determined that the installations create or support more than 268,000 jobs and an estimated $17.1 billion in compensation. The announcement was made at Smiths Detection, Edgewood, a global technology company that provides government regulated technology products and advanced services to security experts and governments worldwide, for threat detection.

“We have long recognized and respected the important role our military installations, commands and facilities play in the defense of our nation,” said Governor O’Malley. “With this comprehensive analysis, we have now quantified the significant overall contribution these facilities have on the state’s economy. Compensation paid to Marylanders, purchases from Maryland companies and visitors coming to Maryland’s installations all pump money into the economy, creating jobs and opportunities for Maryland’s citizens and companies.”

“This is great news for Maryland for three reasons: jobs, jobs, jobs, which mean economic security for more Marylanders,” Senator Mikulski said. “There’s no doubt that our military facilities have a long-standing impact on Maryland’s economy, an impact that will continue to grow as new residents and businesses move to the state as a part of BRAC. But there’s still work to do. We have to work together to help Maryland address the increased demands of BRAC new commands like DISA and C4ISR on our communities. I will continue to focus on how federal dollars can help our counties, and fight for an increased federal investment in these priorities. My promises made to BRAC-impacted communities are promises kept.”

Using federal fiscal year 2008 data, the study determined that the installations directly spend $15.7 billion in Maryland, including in-state payroll, purchases and visitor spending. Military commands and other tenant organizations on the installations employ 118,022 people – 45% civilian and 22% active duty military – representing 3.4% of Maryland’s workforce. Nine out of 10 employees live in Maryland, earning just over $9 billion.

“From Fort Detrick to Indian Head, Andrews Air Force Base to Pax River, Maryland’s military installations play a critical role in ensuring our national security and meeting the needs of our men and women in uniform,” stated Congressman Steny H. Hoyer. “This report underscores the important role these facilities play in driving their local economies, attracting new businesses and creating well-paying jobs. To maintain this momentum, we must continue to ensure that all levels of government work closely with our private sector to make our state an attractive place for military agencies to recruit and retain a highly-skilled workforce to support our national security.”

“As a Member of Congress, I believe it is my duty to support the men and women of the military. It is great to know that support is translating into jobs and a substantial economic benefit to the State of Maryland especially in this tough economy,” said Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD).

The comprehensive analysis of the military facilities was conducted by the Jacob France Institute of the University of Baltimore, in coordination with the Department of Business & Economic Development and funded through the Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation. The study assessed the installations’ direct, indirect and induced impact, including personnel, payroll, procurement and visitors. With the cooperation of and input from 17 major military installations, the study provides a comprehensive assessment of the installations and their economic impact.

For Maryland companies, the economic impact of the installations is significant. Procuring $6.6 billion in goods and services annually from Maryland businesses, the state’s military facilities foster growth in a host of industries from administrative and support services to information technology, computer services and biotechnology. For Smiths Detection and other businesses that are engaged in chemical and biological detection and protection, homeland security and defense, the opportunities are vast.

During his visit to Smiths Detection’s Edgewood facility, Governor O’Malley also participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the company’s advanced airport X-ray screening systems and the U.S. military’s lightweight chemical detectors. He toured the high-tech facility including a walk-through demonstration of the U.S. military’s Chemical-Biological Protective Shelter (CBPS). Smiths’ threat detection equipment has broad applications for use by military forces, airport and transportation security personnel, customs agents and other public service workers.

“We were thrilled to have Governor O’Malley join in our ribbon-cutting ceremony and recognize Smiths Detection’s local contributions to our national armed forces,” said Tim Picciotti, Vice President, Smiths Detection – Americas. “We are proud to be located in Maryland as we collectively try to make the world a safer place.”

BLOOMBERG THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND O'MALLEY

Calls O'Malley "Exactly the Type of Results-Focused Leader We Need Right Now"

High-Profile Endorsement Follows Release of 200+ Maryland Business Leaders Who Are Backing O'Malley

Baltimore, MD (September 30, 2010) -- Today, New York City Mayor and political independent Michael Bloomberg endorsed Governor Martin O'Malley at Honest Tea, Inc. in Bethesda.

Bloomberg is the three-term Mayor of the largest city in the United States and a successful businessman who has endorsed both Republican and Democratic candidates this year.

"Governor O'Malley is exactly the type of results-focused leader we need right now.  By supporting businesses, creating jobs, and investing in a 21st century workforce, O'Malley is positioning Maryland for future economic success," said Mayor Bloomberg.

"I've known Mayor Bloomberg for years and we've worked together on a performance-based, results-oriented approach to governing.  Mayor Bloomberg is an independent, bi-partisan, tell-it-like-it-is voice for progress who knows there's no such thing as a Republican job or a Democratic job.  It's an honor to have his endorsement," said Governor Martin O'Malley.

Bloomberg's endorsement follows the release of a list of more than 200 Maryland business leaders who are publicly supporting Governor Martin O'Malley's re-election bid.  Today, the O'Malley-Brown campaign published the complete list of these business backers in an advertisement in the Baltimore Sun.

The endorsement took place at Honest Tea, Inc., a Bethesda-based beverage maker that is rapidly expanding throughout Maryland and the United States. Honest Tea president and co-founder Seth Goldman welcomed the Governor and Mayor to the headquarters.

A recent Washington Post poll showed O'Malley energizing his supporters and gaining momentum over his opponent.
