Who Will Fernando Fight Next?

After the ooooos and ahhhs faded from the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Friday night and the crowd shuffled out satisfied with a night of action packed boxing one question dominated conversations: Who will Fernando Fight Next?

Before I cover the question head on, I need to address the issue of Guerrero's resume thus far. I continue to hear people say that Fernando needs to "step up" and face someone of higher quality. I understand the wish and desire behind the remarks, but there are some things you have to consider.

Guerrero is just 23 years old. At an age where many of his peers' greatest fight in life is waking up for an 8am econ class, asking "do you want fries with that", trying to "find themselves" or the nearest party, Fernando Guerrero is training nearly non-stop, visiting schools, community events and is providing a very grown up example of what a real role model looks like. When friends and other boxing fans ask me why Guerrero hasn't fought for a major championship yet, I say consider his age. Sergio Gabriel Martinez won the WBC and WBO titles this past Saturday and he is 35. The man he took the titles from, Kelly Pavlik, is 28. WBA middleweight titlist, Felix Sturm, is 31 and IBF titlist Sebastian Sylvester is 29. None of them won their first major title before they were 25 and for Martinez, he just won his first major title at 35.

Some believe that the caliber of Fernando Guerrero's opponents has been weak, but I dispute this. Michael "The Midnight Stalker" Walker had taken Daniel Jacobs, whom many "experts" rate ahead of Guerrero as the best middleweight prospect, to 8 full rounds. Jacobs outboxed Walker, but was not able to dominate him the way Guerrero did. Coming into the fight it was reasonable for Prize Fight, Hal Chernoff and other people in the Guerrero camp to assume Walker would be a fight that Guerrero would win, but would provide a tough challenge and some teachable moments. No one expected this type of dominating performance. The people that argue Guerrero's opponents have been weak would cite his rout of Walker as a support to their argument. However, the fact is Fernando Guerrero is already a world class athlete and is blossoming into something more. Instead of viewing his overwhelming victory as a negative, I'm inclined to say it shows how much Guerrero has and is growing into his role as a legitimate top contender. Given his age and short years of service as a pro his ability to learn while stepping up the fitness part of his game is tremendous. I firmly believe if Guerrero had fought Walker two short years ago the match would have played out much differently. Fernando would still have won, but it wouldn't have been nearly as one-sided. When considering how Guerrero's opponents fare against him, keep in mind his ability as a boxer. Saying his opponents are collectively weak without considering that they may appear that way because Guerrero is an amazing talent is short-sighted, though sort of a backhanded compliment.

People also believe that with a 18-0 record Guerrero needs to be fighting top contenders and/or for a major title. I don't know that this is true at this point. If I were his adviser I certainly would not put Guerrero in the right with Kelly Pavlik or Sergio Gabriel Martinez any time soon. Though I would say he is probably close to taking on Sturm and Sylvester.

What you have to understand is that taking a prospect from the amateurs to the pros and then shepherding them to a title is an art form with moving parts. Every fighter is different and every era in boxing is different. There is an old boxing saying, "styles make fights". To illustrate this point consider that Muhammad Ali beat Joe Frazier two out of the three matches they fought, with all three being competitive. Ali knocked out George Foreman. Foreman knocked Frazier down six times the first time they fought en-route to a second round stoppage. He knocked him down two more the second time they fought and stopped him in five. Foreman dominated Frazier, a man that beat Ali, who was a man that knocked Foreman out. This applies to Team Guerrero because he needs to face several styles of boxer on his way to the title. This way he will be a more well rounded fighter and when he gets a shot at a major title he'll be prepared to beat any style. Two middleweight titles changed hands this weekend, it can happen in any fight, so as a contender you need to ready yourself accordingly and correct matchmaking plays a large role in that development. Right now Team Guerrero is in the fighter development phase of their campaign toward a world title. Give them and him some time, at 23 he certainly has that on his side. In the mean time, it's going to be a privilege and honor watching one of our own mature into a great boxer and an even greater man.

Next time I'll speculate on whom Fernando Guerrero may face in the ring next and in the future.

BREAKING NEWS: BAY NATIONAL BANK SELLS SALISBURY BRANCH TO HEBRON SAVINGS BANK

Hebron Savings Bank and Bay National Bank, the wholly-owned operating subsidiary of Bay National Corporation, are pleased to announce that the parties have entered into a definitive agreement pursuant to which Hebron Savings Bank will purchase substantially all the deposit base and assume certain loans of Bay National Bank’s Salisbury, Maryland branch. While this transaction is subject to regulatory approval, the acquisition is expected to close on or before September 30, 2010.

A Bay National Bank press release, trying to put out a positive spin, was issued earlier today and states:
Gregory W. Johnson, President and CEO of Hebron Savings Bank, said “Bay National Bank’s excellent customer base was a significant attraction to our Company in considering this transaction. We are extremely pleased to welcome the customers of Bay National Bank to Hebron Savings Bank, and we feel privileged to have the opportunity to support their financial needs. Hebron Savings Bank will work diligently to provide the same high quality, personalized level of service Bay National Bank’s customers have become accustomed to. Both banks will work closely to ensure that the transition is seamless.”

Bay National Bank, Lutherville, MD, was founded by Hugh W. Mohler (who owns 59,000 shares). For nearly two decades, Mohler lived in Salisbury and was president of Peninsula Bank. His wife Lucy, was the first executive director of the Community Foundation in Salisbury. Local Board members and investors of Bay National Bank include many Greater Salisbury Committee members including CPA Bob Moore, CPA Ed Rommel (who owns 52,500 shares), and local developer Bill Rinnier. Other local investors include John Lerch (who owns 52,000 shares), Bill & Jean Smith, Beulah Twilley , widow of Milford Twilley, who developed Twilley Center among many other local developments. Smaller investors and/or local advisory board members are:

Michael G. Abercrombie, Jr., Cato Gas & Oil

Richard S. Barr Jr., Barr International, Inc.

Laura Deeley Bren, Atlantic/Smith, Cropper & Deeley Insurance

W. Blair Rinnier, Rinnier Development Company

Richard "Dicky" J. Smith, Jr., Salisbury Auto Trim

City of Fruitland Council President Greg Olinde is a senior vice president at Bay National in Salisbury.

Bay National is selling the branch's $21 million deposit base and about 36 percent of its total loans to Hebron, according to a regulatory filing. The truth is Bay National has been operating under federal oversight since last year as it tries to recover from losses on bad mortgage loans.

Bay National Corp., the parent company of Bay National Bank, also said in a regulatory filing that it has been notified by the Nasdaq stock market that its stock faces a possible delisting because it fails to meet the exchange’s requirement in terms of shareholders’ equity.

Bay National stock (Nasdaq: BAYN) trades on Nasdaq’s Capital Market.

The exchange requires that listed companies have shareholders’ equity — which is a company’s total assets minus its total liabilities — of at least $2.5 million. Bay National had shareholders’ equity of a negative $992,000 as of Dec. 31, 2009. The company also failed to meet the exchange’s listing requirements for market capitalization and net income, which are alternatives to the shareholders’ equity requirement.

Bay National Corp. reported a net loss for the fourth quarter of $11.7 million or $5.43 per share, compared to a net loss of $1.0 million or $0.48 per share for the year-ago quarter.

In 2006-07 Bay national's stock was selling for $ 15 - 19 per share. Today it closed at just 86 cents per share. It's a safe bet all those local investors seriously wish they had held onto their checkbooks and not invested in Mohler's now failing bank!

Poll: 78 Percent Don't Trust Big Government

Trust numbers 'rarely get this low,' survey sponsor says

WASHINGTON
- Can you trust Washington?

Nearly 80 percent of Americans say they can't and they have little faith that the massive federal bureaucracy can solve the nation's ills, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center that shows public confidence in the federal government at one of the lowest points in a half-century.

The poll released Sunday illustrates the ominous situation facing President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party as they struggle to maintain their comfortable congressional majorities in this fall's elections. Midterm prospects are typically tough for the party in power. Add a toxic environment like this and lots of incumbent Democrats could be out of work.

From Champ To Suspect To Suicide

Police say ex-boxing champ Edwin Valero kills self in jail cell after arrest in wife's killing, LT

CARACAS, Venezuela
-- Former boxing champ Edwin Valero committed suicide in his jail cell on Monday just hours after he was arrested in his wife's killing, police said.

The former lightweight champion used his own clothes to hang himself in his cell early Monday, Venezuelan Federal Police Chief Wilmer Flores told reporters. He said Valero tied his clothes to a cell bar to hang himself.

He said Valero was found by another inmate, who alerted authorities in the police lockup in north-central Carabobo state. Valero still showed signs of life, but they were unable to save him, Flores said.

The 28-year-old was detained Sunday on suspicion of killing his wife, the gravest in a string of problems that had threatened to derail his career. Prosecutors said Sunday night that they had planned to charge Valero in the killing.

I Have A New Neighbor

Last week my neighbor came home to a huge surprise. She pulled onto her property and saw a new animal in her pasture she never expected, Lucy. This playful little girl was out and about running and jumping, just having a blast yesterday. I couldn't resist taking a picture of Momma and her new Baby Girl.

OC Health Club Letter To Members

April 17 Update to Members
Saturday, April 17, 2009, 5 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends,

It is with great sadness that I give you this update on the Club. As you know the City came in last month to inspect certain areas of the club. After that inspection, the pool, whirlpool, upstairs weight room and restaurant were closed until the structural damage could be repaired.

We have had a structural engineer working on this issue and determining what needs to be done and estimating the cost and timeline of the needed repairs.

What has compounded the problem is that we do not own this building anymore. The bank, Wilmington Trust, has owned the building for the past several months and we have been tenants. Wilmington Trust, as the owner, is responsible for the structure of the building and they have refused to make the repairs. We have offered to pay for the repairs ourselves with several people coming forward to offer help us with the costs. However, Wilmington Trust does not want the liability and they want to close the building.

In light of all of this, after 26 years at this location, we have no choice but to close the Health Club. We had been in negotiations with Wilmington Trust and our intentions were to give everyone adequate notice as to what was happening. However, the bank has come and closed our doors with only 24 hours notice. At this time, we are left with no options.

My family and I are truly sorry for what has happened and the affect it will have on our community. But it has been because of you, our members and friends that my family and I are going to be looking for another location. Effective immediately, all memberships will be frozen without further payment and we will keep you posted on our future plans via updates right here at http://www.oceancityhealthclub.com/.

Yours In Health,
Gerry Furst and Family

Are You Up To Code & Compliance?

After a mini battle with Salisbury's Code & Compliance Office, 300 W. Main Street now has all of the windows painted as well as the numbers 300 clearly displayed.

However, right next door at the old Feldman's building, paint is chipping off the building, as are many of the other buildings Downtown, yet no violations or citations are being given out there that Salisbury News is aware of.

In neighboring residential areas grass is already overgrown on properties Code & Compliance is also very familiar with, yet I see no tags on their doors or property. Now mind you Folks, it's very easy for me to go around and take pictures of such properties and show they too are not compliant and we all know there's nowhere near the volume of Officers in that department to keep up with the demand. I am by no means trying to say Code & Compliance is doing a bad job because that just wouldn't be true.

It's simply a department that can truly be a pain in the butt and like any department of its kind, they can truly make life extremely difficult. In my case, they have an "internal moratorium" that can be offered to those they feel they choose to extend such a courtesy. I simply wasn't one of them. I explained how we had too much rain and you can't paint in the winter but that simply wasn't good enough.

As soon as the weather changed for the better we completed the work and hopefully we won't see them for quite a while. That is, unless they'd like to shake hands, go to lunch and have a good laugh about the whole thing. Somehow I doubt that's going to happen but I certainly welcome it.

Meet Brye Marth From The Greene Turtle

Yesterday we provided this article referencing the Hostess at the Greene Turtle turning in almost $1,000.00 cash she found at one of the tables.

After personally speaking with Brye yesterday there was no question in my mind, her first reaction was to turn it in.

Because Brye was so kind, Salisbury News chose to post an ad for free for one month for the Greene Turtle. We hope the ad can remind people what good deeds The Greene Turtle can provide as well as the great food service I've personally enjoyed there.

Stopping The Runaway Congress

When the Senate's Republican leader Mitch McConnell took to the floor this week to denounce the latest version of Chris Dodd's vision for how American finance and banking ought to be run, McConnell eased fears among conservatives of all sorts that the GOP would go along with an alleged Wall Street makeover just to avoid the prospect of an MSM chorus of denunciation of Republicans as obstructionists.

McConnell blistered the Dodd bill as a pathway to future bailouts and in a stroke gave the GOP firm ground on which to fight.

Now if he can only do the same thing twice more.

Disgust with the runaway Congress that blew past the objections of a large majority of Americans when it came to Obamacare has not dissipated in the weeks since the jam-down occured. President Obama's poll numbers have hit new all-time lows and could drop further as the parade of horribles associated with Obamacare gets longer and longer and new and unpleasant surprises seem to emerge every day.

This is not a Congress to inspire confidence. In fact, this Congress inspires a great deal of fear and, in some quarters, loathing. Voters cannot wait until November to deliver the political punishment that always follows parties and politicians who turn their faces against their people who sent them to D.C.

Lewes Pediatrician Was Subject Of 1996 Complaint

Sunday, April 18, 2010Scott Wykoff and Associated Press

A Delaware hospital has revealed that it investigated a 1996 complaint against a pediatrician now accused of molesting more than 100 patients, but the doctor was cleared of any wrongdoing.
A nurse reported in 1996 that Dr. Earl Bradley may have inappropriately touched young girls in his care.

Officials at Beebe Medical Center said after Bradley's December arrest that they were not aware of any past problems with him. They have since acknowledged that Bradley was investigated by Milford police in 2005, but no charges were filed. Officials said in a statement that they were revealing the 1996 complaint now because they could do so "without jeopardizing the criminal case."

Police and prosecutors found out about the 1996 investigation after they charged him in December.
