POWER LEVEL SERIES WITH 5-1 WIN IN GAME FOUR

Phillip Irwin Tosses Seven Scoreless Innings

Charleston, WV –
The West Virginia Power used a fourth-inning home run en route to a 5-1 win over the Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. The Shorebirds did not plate a run until the ninth inning.

After three scoreless innings, the Power cracked the scoreboard in the fourth inning. David Rubenstein drew a lead off walk. Two batters later, Jose Hernandez singled. Then, Jesus Brito drilled a Jesse Beal breaking ball over the left field wall to lift the Power to an early 3-0 edge.

In the sixth inning, Jose Hernandez hit a lead off homer to give the Power a 4-0 lead.

The Power tacked on a fifth run in the seventh inning against relief pitcher Brian Parker, who made his Shorebirds debut. After the first two outs were recorded, Jarek Cunningham doubled. Then, David Rubenstein hit a triple to the right-center field gap to bring home Cunningham.

The Shorebirds scored their lone run in the ninth inning off reliever Eliecer Navarro. Tyler Townsend belted a double to deep center field. The next batter, Kieron Pope delivered a double to deep left field to score Townsend.

West Virginia starter Phillip Irwin earned his third win of the season in seven shutout innings. He allowed only four hits. Irwin struck out seven and walked one. Irwin retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced.

Jesse Beal was tagged with the loss in six innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs. Beal fanned four and walked two.

The Shorebirds return to action on Saturday, July 3 against the West Virginia Power. RHP Pat Kantakevich will make his second start of the season.
