New Immigrants

From: "David LaBonte"

My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to "print" it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in theOrange County Register:

Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the
United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan . They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France , no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of
those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their
mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by
those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty , it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

  1. This letter is full of historical misrepresentations bred largely through a mystical highly eurocentric view of history. Lady turn off the t.v. and delve deeper into the subject matter. Your letter demonstrates your blissful ignorance that some would say touches on outright racism. Sorry but there is just too much BS to provide a line by line rebuttal of this woman's claims. In fact, the letter is laughable.

  2. Well said Mrs. Rosemary LeBonte,
I hope everyone takes a moment to read your letter.
My wish is that the "entitlement age" wakes up!
Living in AMERICA, is a privilage. No one is entitled to anything without their "OWN" blood, sweat and tears to make it happen!
Honor the sacrafices of your forefathers, for it was their blood , sweat and tears that built this great country!

    Peace and Brightest Blessings,
    K. Howard

  3. Thank you for sharing. Unless you are of Native American descent, our grandparents, great grandparent, and even older generations sacrificed for us, the younger (& not so young) generations to live in a country that they loved, wanting more for their future generations. All the wonderful experiences we have been allowed to enjoy by the wonderful melting pot of cultures. As mentioned we love this country and if you arrive in this land of the free and don't like our Constitution, Bill of Rights, PLEASE feel free to return to your native land!
Sorry for rambling, just had to share.

  4. 9:59

Sounds like you are just a run of the mill open border lib or an illegal immigrant. If it is the latter please go home.

  5. 9:59 we don't want them and we especially don't want you. How can you argue that the original immigrants didn't receive or expect to receive any handouts when the came here? You are the ignorant one.

  6. 9:59 Your rhetoric and verbal emesis indicate an inability to argue intelligently. You typed many words, but actually said nothing. Perhaps you were not unwilling to argue against Ms. LaBonte, but unable.

  8. Ok folks

#1 Immigrants coming through Ellis Island were processed in a matter of hours. Compared to today's processing time in years.
#2 Not sure if you've ever actually spoken with any immigrants these days, but most I've spoked with are proud workers/business owners who are glad they came to the US. Which is why they risk death in the desert or out at sea to get here.
#3 straight BS. Many early immigrants never learned English and many banded into their own neighborhoods segregated according to their homeland/culture/language just as immigrants do today.
#4 "blend in" means "I don't want to be discriminated against today"
Sorry, but thats a bit harder for the loads of brown and black skin people coming in today.
#5 "waved goodbye to their birthplace....": Uh hello, same thing is going on today
#6"nothing handed": Which is why employers will line up to hire hispanics now. They'll fall all over themselves to get that crappy job and do what they have to do to earn that paycheck to send home

Honestly the rest isn't even worth debunking. It's all based on opinions without any thought to factual analysis. And it's based on some idea that folks coming over from Europe maintain higher morals and a stronger work ethic than people coming from other places in the world. If that isn't the definition of racism, I don't know what is. But you guys will suck it up because to you it atleast sounds true. I'm glad to see that people like you are becoming a minority.

And for the record, I am all for LEGAL immigration. As far as illegals, they are here trying to hustle to support themselves and their families at a time when many can't do so in their own country. Which of you wouldn't do the same for yourself and your kids? I blame the employers who have been turning a blind eye to the issue.
