Guerrero Wins NABO Middleweight Title In Salisbury!

Salisbury, MD – Backed by more than 5,000 fans at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium, Salisbury sensation Fernando Guerrero earned the NABO Interim Middleweight title Saturday night with an impressive 10 round majority decision over renowned tough guy Ossie Duran.

After a tentative start during the first few rounds, Guerrero turned up the heat. A straight left hand stunned Duran in the sixth, but the New Jersey based Ghanaian hung in tough. The hard hitting Guerrero kept Duran on his toes in the seventh, tagging the respected veteran with crisp combinations. Guerrero was cut over the left eye in the 8th following an accidental headbutt, but the blood didn’t deter the hometown hero.

Guerrero maintained a high workrate, but was controversially ruled down in the final round. While his loyal fans, who packed the stadium despite poor weather conditions throughout the day, were livid with the knockdown call, Guerrero kept his composure and finished strong.

Scores of 97-93 and 96-94 overruled a questionable tally of 95-95. With the victory, Guerrero improved to 16-0 (13 KO’s), while the grizzled Duran falls to 23-8 (9 KO’s).

“It was a great learning experience”, said Guerrero, who needed five stitches to close the gash from the headbutt. “Duran was a great opponent and he’s gone the distance with some good fighters.”

Like those in attendance, Guerrero was astonished that referee Gary Camponeschi credited Duran with a knockdown in the final round.

“Everyone knew it was a slip.” “It rained earlier in the day, which made the canvas slippery, but I got right back up and fought to the finish.”

The Guerrero-Duran bout topped Prize Fight Boxing’s “Title Time”.

Prize Fight returns Tuesday November 2 with the popular “Miller Light Fight Night” at New Daisy Theater in Memphis, TN followed by “Fights at the Fitz”, Saturday November 21 from Fitzgerald’s Casino in Tunica, MS.

WHO IS GREEDY?

Reading the comments posted, on this blog site, prompted me to check out the financials of two companies. I leave it to the reader to reach their own conclusions. We are told Health Care problems are caused by the greedy private insurance companies. I picked United Health Care, one of the biggest, to look at.

United Health Care reports its operating cost is 14% of revenue. This, I believe is lower than most competitors, but still higher than other industrial nations. They report a 6.6% profit, pretty good. However, they pay 34% of revenues in taxes. Who do you think benefits the most?

I then chose to look at Goldman Sachs. This financial institution is a large political campaign donor. Secretaries of the Treasury, serving both parties, have their roots in Goldman Sachs. They reported a profit of 48% of revenue, while paying only 1% of income in taxes. There could be many accounting reasons for this, but where is the cry for a windfall profit tax?

"It appears it's not what you know, but who you know."

The Blink Of An Eye

What a week this has been. Mom was released from the Hospital and Hospice made sure every single thing we could possibly dream of was delivered.

Mom's condition was horrible in the Hospital but once she came home she perked right up and has even gotten her voice back where she can be heard. You talk about a huge relief! Just imagine how difficult it is on a person who desperately tries to tell you something and they can't be understood.

Fortunately for me, I grew up with an Aunt & Uncle who were both deaf. My Uncle could hear up until he was 9 years old, so he could talk but over the years he couldn't pronounce words very well in his later years. However, even though he was hard to understand, he insisted that you never shake your head yes or simply agree with him, knowing you couldn't understand what he said. So we learned to read lips extremely well and since I spent the most time with them, I could understand everything my Mother was trying to say in the Hospital and I have to tell you, she was so relieved whenever I've been around.

I've been feeling like I can't leave her side because I didn't want her frustrated. Since she got her voice back yesterday I was able to take a little bit of a break last night and today and catch up on some much needed sleep. I'll head back to Annapolis some time this morning and enjoy some more quality time with Mom.

Her siblings have been able to come down and visit with her as well as all of her Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. The look on her face when each and every one of them arrived has been priceless.

Mom said that her life on this earth is but a "Blink of an eye" and she's at such peace knowing she'll spend eternity with God. One can only wish everyone had this same peace and understanding.

This coming week will be pretty challenging. My Bothers and Sister have chosen to be Mom's caretakers. Hospice will come in one to three times a week for an hour, or so each day. In the mean time we have broken down two shifts a day, making sure there are two of us available in the evenings. Mom likes to think she can get up out of her Hospital Bed in the evenings in order to get things done. You know, usually around 4:00 AM when she thinks everyone is asleep, NOT!

That being said, I'll be covering the 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM shift every day, traveling from Delmar to Annapolis most days. I am able to access my e-mail and appreciate the information everyone is sending in and calling in so we can keep things flowing.

What I'd like to share with everyone is that I can't express deeply enough how much I appreciate everyone understanding this period in my life. I have dedicated almost 5 years of my life to Salisbury News and to get a report from Site Meter every day showing out visits are almost exactly the same as it was before all of this came about, it truly makes my day every day. The kind wishes have been very uplifting and even the messages asking me to Post certain topics, messages and articles have been a huge help.

Last night I took a break from everything and came back to Salisbury to support my very dear friends Hal Chernoff, Fernando Guerrero and Alex Guerrero. Folks, THANK YOU! Wait until you see the pictures of the crowd last night at the Shorebirds Stadium! Of course Fernando won his Title Fight as did Alex. The support ALL of you have given to this Sport as well as the Main Street Gym and the Guerrero Family has truly been overwhelming. If you took all of the people sitting on the field last night and placed them in the stands, there wouldn't have been a seat left in that Stadium. That's impressive! I'll have photos available tomorrow of this event.

I have to head back to Annapolis for the day. You enjoy your Sunday, call your Mother and Father and tell them how much you love them. I can't stress enough how important it is while you have them to ask some basic questions. Mom, what are your wishes when you die. Do you want to be buried, cremated, where would you like to be buried, etc.. Trust me, we had no idea what Mom wanted and we thought we were never going to have her back to a level in which we could hold this discussion, let alone understand what her response was. Fortunately Mom woke up at 4:00 AM Saturday morning and shared with my Brother that she wanted to be buried next to her Dad in New York. We had NO CLUE! If we had to make that decision on our own, Mom would have been buried right in the Annapolis area and we would have made a huge mistake.

It may not be a question you feel comfortable about and when I asked several of my friends what their parents wishes were, they had no idea. They would say, that's not the type of topic we're used to bringing up. Don't assume there's a Will and everything perfectly spelled out for you. Mom may have one but we have yet to be able to locate it if there is.

In many cases over the years, this Blog has been able to bring up many topics of information in which you wouldn't normally read in places like the Daily Times and so forth. We simply assumed that out of five of us, one of us would have known these answers and we too never brought it up. After all, Mom is only 70.

So take the extra few minutes and use this Blog as your reason why you're asking these questions. Tell them you want to make sure their wishes are completely fulfilled. Here's another thing I never knew. If you're Catholic, I didn't know the Church, (while they only recently chose to accept cremation) wishes you to be buried on Holy Ground. They do not believe in spreading your ashes anywhere. I had no clue, until yesterday. OK, I know many of you aren't Catholic and may wish to argue this issue. If you do, please do so with respect towards those who do agree. We can agree to disagree on many topics and do so with class, especially on this particular Post.

OK, I have to run. Have a fantastic day everyone and like I said yesterday, we'll be as good as new very soon.

The Seagull Century

Joe,

Hope this message finds you and your Mom doing well.

These people are totally out of control. No respect for other traffic, let
alone, pedestrians! Now don't get me wrong, (some) of the riders do respect the
law, private property, pedestrians, and the fact that they are outweighed by
3000+ pounds when they decide to challenge a vehicle (and I do mean challenge).
Just what is it that makes these riders feel that they are above the law and the
whole community has to stop and bow to them?

I was coming home tonight, and at the intersection of Bateman and Rt.13, there
were 6 police cars (all State, I think), lights flashing, men in road, --no
bikers--but traffic was unbelievable! Why are they there, and who is protecting
the rest of us? They need to be out writing tickets in the morning to all the
lawless riders heading down S. Division St.--or are they not ALLOWED to write a
ticket to a bicycle rider? (sorry getting carried away)

My point: What does this event bring to Salisbury/Wicomico County?

I'm sure I am not the only resident who feels put out for all these
knuckleheads.

REAL CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM

The dictionary defines "BRIBE" as, anything given or promised as an inducement. How often have our elected officials told us the large campaign contributions, they receive do not effect their votes? Why, then, do their votes almost always benefit the contributor? I will focus on Washington, where the largest BRIBES take place, but state and local officials can be equally guilty.

A Congressman is appointed to a particular committee and suddenly the industry regulated, by that committee, starts making contributions. Are we to believe they, just then, realized what a fine person the Congressman is? A campaign committee, with a finance chairman receives the money and many in Congress claim they were not aware of the contribution. Is this plausible? I am reminded of a Louisiana Congressman who claimed $10,000 dollars that was given to his wife, by a Korean businessman was unknown to him. If your wife received $10,000 dollars, do you think she wouldn't tell you? Members of both political parties engage in this practice, however, due to recent events, I will focus on just one.

Trial lawyers are one of the largest contributors, if not the largest, to the Democrat party. The independent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) states $54 billion dollars could be saved by "TORT REFORM" yet no pending legislation on health care includes any reform. Do you believe this is just a coincidence? Former Congressman Jefferson, of Louisiana was caught with $90,000 dollars in his freezer, for this he was convicted of accepting a BRIBE. Former Congressman Cunningham is in jail and Congressman Traficant was just released for similar offenses. It is obvious that the Congress will do nothing to cut off this funding source unless the people demand prosecution for this practice. It is almost amusing that so many members of Congress are former prosecutors, and yet they see nothing wrong or illegal in accepting money from those they oversee, as long as it's kept in a campaign account. To my mind this is a distinction without a difference.

Ohio Man Charged With DUI / Vehicular Assault Following Chase

Location: Route 13 and SR9 in Seaford, Delaware, Sussex County

Date of Occurrence: Sunday, October 11, 2009, at 1:07 a.m.

Suspect(s): Travieso Moises, 20, of Pinetree Road in Columbus, Ohio

Resume: A Columbus, Ohio man was charged with DUI, Vehicular Assault and other offenses early this morning after short car chase in Seaford, Delaware.

This incident began after several concerned citizens called the State Police dispatch center in Sussex County, SUSCOM, and advised a red Chevrolet Venture was traveling on Route 13 northbound in the southbound lanes.

Patrol units were dispatched and located the suspect vehicle, still traveling northbound on the wrong side of the road, on Route 13 at CR 485. The initial officer on the scene activated his emergency equipment at which time the suspect vehicle took off.

As the Chevy neared the area of Route 13 and Concord Road, a back-up officer deployed “stop-sticks” (a tire deflation device). The van ran over the device and it started to reduce its speed.

At this same time, John Jenny, 25, of Dagsboro, Delaware, was operating a Dodge Dakota, southbound on Route 13 and observed the van still traveling northbound, in the southbound lanes, directly toward him. Mr. Jenny pulled over to the side of the road to come to a stop and let the van go by when the Chevrolet Venture struck his vehicle.

Both vehicles were now stopped.

Mr. Travieso was trapped in his vehicle for a period of time until he could be extricated by mechanical means.

The occupants in the Dakota- Mr. Jenny, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman- sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that Moises Travieso was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was treated at an area medical center for non-life threatening injuries. He was formally charged just a few hours ago with the following offenses: Possession of a Deadly Weapon during a Commission of a Felony [his vehicle] (felony), Disregarding a Police Officers Signal (felony), three counts of Vehicular Assault 2nd (felony), DUI, Underage Consumption, No License and seven other moving violations. Bail was set at $24,900 secured and Travieso was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute.

Socialism Continues To Spread In Wicomico

Socialism is alive and well in and around Salisbury. A few years ago a Daily Times editor - Joe Cacchiolla telephoned me and asked what I thought about Dresser's move to Austin, Texas.
Back then I informed him that I was quite sure that the facility would be purchased by the college along with most all other adjacent private industry properties and he thought I was exaggerating.
Well folks even despite this steep recession whereby 17% of our youth are unemployed - the college continues to spend taxpayers dollars like there is no tomorrow. The City's tax base continues to diminish as your local, State, and Federal government continues its massive expansion.
If this doesn't fit the definition of Socialism then I don't know what does.
You won't see any of this kind of coverage out The Daily Times because they are part of the mechanized 'machinery'.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

In 1915, racer Gil Anderson set a new auto speed record on the opeining day of races at the Sheepshead Bay Speedway located in Brooklyn, New York. Driving a Stutz automobile, Anderson achieved an average speed of 102.6 MPH over a 350 mile course, breaking the 100 MPH barrier while setting a new speed record for such a distance.
