STATE POLICE ARREST TEACHER FOR SOLICITATION OF A MINOR
(Bel Air, MD) The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested a Harford County middle school physical education teacher today for allegedly sexually soliciting a fifteen year old boy from Prince George’s County.
The accused is identified as Jonathan S. Dick, 43, of the 1300-block of Sheridan Place in Bel Air. He is charged with two counts of solicitation of a minor. If convicted, Dick could be sentenced up to ten years and/or a $25,000 fine per count.
The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Section began this investigation in February after receiving a complaint from the victim’s parents when they located disturbing sexual text messages between the juvenile victim and Dick. Investigators obtained the juvenile’s cellular phone and laptop computer and were able to recover the Internet chats. The solicitation occurred over a period of several weeks, after the juvenile and Dick began communicating on a social networking website. Investigators were able to trace the account information back to Dick.
Police learned that Dick is employed as a physical education teacher at Fallston Middle School in Harford County. He also serves as a boys lacrosse coach at Fallston High School.
Police executed a search warrant at Dick’s Bel Air residence early this morning, seizing a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and several printed documents and pictures relevant to the investigation. The seized computers will be sent to the State Police Computer Forensics Laboratory for examination.
Dick was arrested at the Harford County Administrative Offices at noon today. He was then processed at the Bel Air barrack and transported to the Harford County Detention Center. A bond hearing before a court commissioner will occur later today.
Because this investigation involves a teacher, the State Police coordinated efforts with the Harford County Child Advocacy Center, the Harford County State’s Attorney Office, and the Harford County Public Schools administration.
This case continues to be investigated by the State Police and the Harford County Child Advocacy Center. Anyone with any information concerning this case is urged to contact the Center at 410-638-3294.
The Computer Crimes Unit’s primary mission is to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation. The unit works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to provide resources to combat these crimes. The unit is also charged with helping to prevent the spread of these crimes through education and community awareness.
Four Charged In Threatening Text Message Incident
The Delaware State Police have arrested four persons in relation to the threatening text messages that generated significant police presence in local schools in the Seaford and Woodbridge School Districts. Moreover, DSP learned the incident was conspired amongst three persons after they learned of the Wal-Mart urban myth that circulated the area on Wednesday afternoon. This message was done with an attempt to create a similar reaction within the community - with the ultimate goal to alarm people a shooting was going to occur in the schools.
Detectives successfully retraced the message through cellular telephones obtained from students and were able to link it to a cellular telephone owned to Charia S. West, 19 of Seaford. As investigators continued the investigation they learned that she and two relatives, who reside with her, had constructed the idea to send the alarming message to various people within the Seaford District. The original message was sent to persons shortly after 12:00 am this morning.
These two relatives, a niece and nephew of West’s, are a 14 year old female and a 15 year old male. Investigators were able to locate all subjects earlier today and through interviews obtained additional knowledge they were involved in the crime.
These three subjects have been linked and are responsible for Seaford School District incident. Detectives have identified a fourth person responsible for generating and disseminating the threatening text message throughout the Woodbridge School district. A 16 year old Bridgeville woman had received the original text message from the aforementioned persons and altered the text to reflect Woodbridge instead of Seaford and then sent it to persons within the Woodbridge District.
As a result of the investigation, Charia West has been charged with felony Terroristic Threatening and Conspiracy 2nd degree. The two juveniles related to West, who were involved with the Seaford incident, were charged with misdemeanor Terroristic Threatening and Conspiracy 3rd degree. The fourth juvenile was arrested for misdemeanor Terroristic Threatening. All juveniles were released to their parents pending court proceedings in Family Court.
Arraignment information on West is currently not available. It will be released once it becomes known. All persons were taken into custody at their homes with the exception of the male juvenile who was detained at school.
UPDATE: Ms. West received a $5000.00 secured bond and was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Woman's Correctional Center in New Castle.

Joe,
Just to let you know I live in the London Avenue area and near one of the candidates. I put a Jim Ireton sign in my yard and I saw a light blue or gray foriegn car stop by and steal my sign and then had the audacity to replace it with a Comegys sign. The car was a nice looking BMW or Volvo and it had the Chesapeake Bay tags. I could only read the first three numbers as it sped away and I think it started with 803? I then took the Comegys sign and threw it away and replaced it with an Ireton sign. I woke up this morning and my Ireton sign is gone again. To the thief who keeps stealing my signs will you please return them. This has really turned into a nasty election and it is apparent that several people are desparate and running scared.
I want my city back!
Editors Note: Unfortunately this is an "anonymous" comment. Sadly, too many people are in fear of using their name because of possible retaliation. We're hearing and seeing this all too often. The Mayor wants to blame Salisbury News for people being afraid to speak up at Council Meeting and or volunteering to different Boards. This is just not true. I know people who are more than qualified for certain Boards, sent in their intent letter and never heard back from the Mayor.
It IS time to take back your City. A vote for Gary Comegys is simply a vote for more of the same. Make sure you encourage every person you can to get out there and vote Folks. Jim Ireton stated yesterday, on April 8, 2009, this kind of intimidation will end! I believe him.

BREAKING NEWS: State Police Have Arrested Three Persons For Threatening Text Messages
The Delaware State Police have taken three persons into custody that are responsible for the threatening text messages that circulated throughout the Seaford and Woodbridge School Districts earlier today. Detectives have been able to successfully trace the messages back to the originating cellular device and have positively identified the owner of the phone. State Police currently have one adult and two juveniles in custody at Troop 5 in Bridgeville. The juveniles are students in the Seaford School District.
Information regarding the identities and charges of these persons will be released later today.
In addition, earlier this morning both the Sussex Technical High School and Sussex Central High School received verbal bomb threats. DSP is investigating those threats and as a result both districts have evacuated students as police trained K-9’s conduct searches of the school. Those incidents remain under investigation.
Note: These arrests are not related to the bomb threats.

"No grand plot, eh?
Does this non-existent plot include the email from council president Mike Dunn to the mayor just after Debbie Campbell took office that plotted to restrict information to Campbell?
Comegys learned early on in his SHA job, and then again under Dunn's "leadership" that restricting information to a select few was a great tool for getting what he wanted. And that lying, if you don't get caught, becomes easier and easier.
Comegys lies again. Just as he will continue to do if he becomes mayor, when the lies will become bigger and he'll be paid more to tell them."
Note to City Administration. The memory of the downtrodden is very long.
David C Offers The Following Comment
Dave C has left a new comment on your post "Did You Listen To The Show?":
Joe, I assume that you read the bashing that the Daily Times put on Ireton today? Based on the article, Webster has no idea what is going on in the City. I do not care what the statistics say-CRIME IS UP!!! I have lived here every day of my life and I have never seen it this bad, EVER! I've never feared for my safty like I do now.
Crime is not just about numbers, it is qualitative just as much as it is quantitative. Just because the numbers might be down according Webster (if they even are) doesn't mean that crime is decreasing. Sure there may be less incidents, but those incidents are becoming more severe...which would you rather have: 5 purse snatchings, 10 vandalisms, 15 shopliftings or 1 murder? The crimes are graduating in the City-they are going from small misdemeanors to capital crime.
According to the numbers on this site:
Our violent crime rate is more than 3 times the national average and considerably higher than the State average! According to this site BALTIMORE HAS A LOWER CRIME RATE THAN SALISBURY!!!
Look at that! Salisbury is ranked as the WORST City in MD in regards to voilent crime!!! LA, Detroit, Miami, Compton and Philadephia all have lower violent crime rates than Salisbury!!! I'm sorry to disappoint you folks, but Chicago still has a higher voilent crime rate than us...maybe Gary Comegys can help us acheive that one...
Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside huh?
It's obsurd to say that Salisbury does not have a crime problem. It doesn't need to be lowered-it needs to be drastically lowered!!! So now I say to you, Mr. Comegys and Mr. Webster. "Take your blinders off and tell us exactly what your take on crime in Salisbury and how are you going to drastically lower it?"
Did You Listen To The Show?
Did You Listen? I thought Jim Ireton truly tore Gary Comegys up. There's no question any more that Jim Ireton is in the drivers seat. Comegys stated that we needed to POOL together our Police Forces throughout the County to fight crime. Hey, Gary, WHY DO YOU THINK CRIME IS DOWN? I'm serious Gary, I truly want you to think about this for a minute. EVERY single citizen can tell you it's because they constantly see the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office patrolling the City. Crime is DOWN because Sheriff Mike Lewis CARES! Why isn't anyone talking about this? The one and ONLY reason crime is down is because the Sheriff's Department has been proactive in the City of Salisbury.
Let's see what people thought of the Interview.
Bush Admin Fallout Continues
In the latest fallout from former Bush administration officials, Lawrence Wilkerson, the former chief of staff to then then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, said the U.S. has continued to jail many Guantanamo Bay prisoners seized in Afghanistan despite knowing of their innocence. In an interview with the Associated Press, Wilkerson said the U.S. held on to the innocent prisoners in the hopes they could one day provide helpful intelligence.
Describing the Bush administration mentality, Wilkerson said: “It did not matter if a detainee were innocent. Indeed, because he lived in Afghanistan and was captured on or near the battle area, he must know something of importance.”
Wilkerson continued: “We need to put those people in a high-security prison like the one in Colorado, forget them and throw away the key. We can’t try them because we tortured them and didn’t keep an evidence trail.”
He continues, many detainees "clearly had no connection to al-Qaida and the Taliban and were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Pakistanis turned many over for $5,000 a head."
Wilkerson says former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney fought efforts to improve vetting of Afghan prisoners.
This abuse of power and trampling of the virtues and values of this great country turns my stomach. As time goes on, the past 8 years will grow into a darker and darker blemish on American history. Don't believe me? I just had a friend return from 3 weeks abroad and everywhere he went, people of all nationalities wanted to know if he was embarrassed to introduce himself as an American.
(but let's go ahead and make this about Obama shall we? I know the commenters will)
State Police Investigating Threatening Text Messages in Two Local School Districts
The student notified his parents who reported it to police. Because of this message, DSP and Seaford School District officials requested additional police presence at the schools as a precautionary measure while police investigated. It should be known that the message was the sent to many other students who began forwarding it throughout the student population..
Currently, the DSP and Seaford Police Department have eight officers located at the two schools and district officials have placed the schools on Level 1 lockdown. This minimizes students and visitors from entering or leaving the building.
As this investigation was underway, another text message was received by a student in the Woodbridge School District indicating a similar occurrence happening at the High School. District Officials and DSP have placed three troopers at that school while the investigation is underway.
Questions concerning the Seaford School District can be directed to Ms. Bonnie Johnson at 302.629.4587 ext. 276. Questions concerning the Woodbridge School District can be directed to officials at 302.337.8289.
Currently there is no suspect information. When updated information is available it will be released. Anyone who has any information on this crime is urged to contact investigators at Troop 5 at 302.337.1090 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.TIP.3333.
WHY WOULD ANYONE VOTE FOR MUIR BODA (OR COMEGYS AND SHIELDS)?
Mr. Boda has not espoused any significant position or stated any real criticism of his opponent for the District 2 seat, Debbie Campbell. At a recent candidate forum he pointedly suggested that Ms. Campbell has voted "no" too often. But he did not explain why in any specific instance she should have voted in the affirmative instead. Apparently, Mr. Boda believes that City Council members should be "yes" persons who will rubber stamp whatever the mayor wants – in other words, "bobble heads," like Comegys and Shields have been during their terms on the Council.
If Mr. Boda is going to criticize Ms. Campbell’s voting record he should present the pertinent details in each instance. For example, consider her "no" vote on the initial rezoning of the Salisbury Mall site at the January 23, 2006, meeting of the Council (Ordinances 1965 and 1966). The minutes show that local residents who opposed the "PDD" zoning presented extensive material, including past amendments of the zoning code, to support their position that the proposed zoning classification was unlawful. The Tilghman administration and its supporters on the Council at that time – Comegys, Dunn, Cathcart and Shields – refused to consider that record or the facts. The vote was 4 to 1, and the following day the Daily Times offered this blather by Comegys: "I feel we’ll all be looking back and say, ‘I’m glad that we’re doing this.’ "
Well, let’s have that look back.
Citizens who opposed the rezoning appealed it, as they had threatened to do, and in September, 2006, the Wicomico County Circuit Court struck the rezoning down as unlawful. Thus, the "yes" vote (by Comegys and Shields among others) caused:
1. Legal fees to be paid to the City Attorney – estimated at $25,000 to $50,000 for an unsuccessful effort to defend the rezoning in Court – in addition to the fees charged by Paul Wilber earlier to opine that it would be upheld in Court.
2. Delay to occur in the redevelopment of the site – altogether the delay was probably at least 18 months due to the illegal PDD rezoning, which was reviewed by the "Planning Commission" before it was enacted by the City Council.
But, if Mr. Comegys and Ms. Shields had voted "no" with Ms. Campbell, the City would have saved those wasted legal fees, and by promptly revising the rezoning ordinances, as later occurred after the debacle in the Circuit Court, the City would be much better off today.
Mr. Boda: if you are going to criticize Ms. Campbell for voting "no" in this (or any other) instance, please tell us why she should have voted “yes.” Simply stated: put up or shut up, pal!

Dot Truitt Drills The Daily Times
March 20, 2009
Thursday's article on the candidates' forums held Wednesday night by the Wicomico Democratic and Republican clubs, which I attended, contains huge inaccuracies that need to be corrected.
First, there was no letter of endorsement for Jim Ireton from Debbie Campbell and Cynthia Polk. The letter is an endorsement of Ireton, Campbell and Polk from the Salisbury Career Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 4246.
Campbell, Polk and Ireton do have common views on tackling crime, fiscal responsibility and protecting neighborhoods. Campbell and Polk probably do support Ireton, but have made no public endorsements of anyone during this election.
Getting this wrong shows bad reporting and bad editing. It is easy to read and understand a letter. Calling a respected endorsement from the firefighters "side-line politics" is more of the same underhanded, divisive shadow cast during the elections the public has come to expect from The Times.
The article also quoted Ireton when actually it was Gary Comegys' words. Campbell's quote about financial issues looked like words were thrown in a bag, shaken up and dumped on the table. Campbell is articulate and knows the difference between a budget cut and a revenue generator.
I could list other examples from other articles. Simply put, The Daily Times has once again not reported accurately and shown bias in its reporting and editing. Readers deserve better.

Thanks to an article that you published a few weeks ago, I looked at the Salisbury map on the SpotCrime.com website http://www.spotcrime.com/md/salisbury
I signed up for the free once a day e-mail alert (they do cell phones too) about crime within 2 miles of my house. Here’s what I got sent just today - other days in the few weeks since I've had this have been even worse.
I hope that all of your readers will take a look, too. It's a free and unbiased crime listing and mapping service. I have even recommended it to friends in other communities.
I know that you printed this information once, but with some trying to sell the “crime is down” mantra in this election season it is especially important for people to l ook at this map and this list. And then they can decide if they want to keep or elect local officials who think that it’s perfectly fine to have a crime rate that’s nearly four times the national average, or if they want leaders who are ready to fight crime in a meaningful way.

Uncle Sam's Plantation
By Star Parker
Scripps Howard News Service
Six years ago I wrote a book called ``Uncle Sam's Plantation." I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.
I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas. A poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.
I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.
A vast sea of perhaps well intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960's, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.
A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from ``How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"
Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems. The kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.
The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.
Through God's grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.
I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican congress and signed into law by a Democrat president. A few years after enactment, welfare roles were down fifty percent.
I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth producing American capitalism.
But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction.
Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.
Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, ``Thank you, Suh."
Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.
There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.
In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short-term economic stimulus.
``This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending ― it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, health care, and education."
Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place ``with unprecedented transparency and accountability."
Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education.
Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 ― The War on Poverty ― which President Johnson said, ``… does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty."
Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single parent homes and out of wedlock births.
It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.
Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

A Comment From David Massey
I'm surprised that Mr. Boda pointed out Mrs. Campbell's "nay" votes at last night's forum. Perhaps he didn't realize that he was really pointing out one of her many strengths. To me, a no vote says, "I've taken the time to do my homework and look at ALL the implications of what's being proposed, and this proposal is not in the best of interests of the taxpayers or the city." HMMMM...could this mean that council majority rarely does ITS homework to the extent it should and just pushes through a lot of unwise things with that "yes" rubber stamp that so often used at the GOB that it's nearly worn out???
I understand that Mr. Boda also said that one has to be able to work with people (or words to that effect). To that I'd just say, "Yes,Mr. Boda, YOU try working with people who won't even give you the paperwork you're supposed to have so you can be well-informed before a work session or meeting. YOU try working with people who get annoyed with you because you see a need to further discuss and question things before you vote on them. In short, sir, just TRY to effectively do your job in the kind of climate (icy cold) in which Mrs. Campbell does hers, THEN come back in four years and tell me about working with others." Until that time, though, don't make comments in public that tend to mislead citizens about Mrs. Campbell's ability to work with others.
Sorry for the length of this post, Joe, but it "steams" me big time whenever I've heard over the years people criticize Mrs. Campbell because she "rocks the boat too much" or "takes too much of council's time to get things done."
Good government isn't about how fast we can get things done or how many times per minute we can bang that "YES" rubber stamp down. It's about doing the research, doing the homework (regardless of how much time and sweat that takes) listening to your constituency's voices, weighing all factors, and THEN saying yay or nay.
Mrs. Campbell does all those things, plus a LOT more, for Salisbury, and probably puts up with way more crap while doing it, than we'll ever know.
To the Anon. post @ 9:42 who predicts one day a building will be named after Mrs. Campbell, I say, "I sure hope you're right." We owe her that and a lot more.

An Interesting Event In Victoria, Texas
Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this past weekend as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, noting that revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down by 19%.
Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97%, and the cost of daily clean-up and trash collection was down by 84%. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers actually paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards...

But I was wondering, since I am paying my mortgage and theirs, could you arrange for me to borrow the Harley now and then?

P.S. They also need help with their credit cards. When do you want me to start making those payments?
P.P.S. I almost forgot - they didn't file their income tax return this year.
Should I go ahead and file for them or will you be appointing them to cabinet posts?
I Hope It Wasn't Something Serious!

AIRLINE BEAUTIES
Airline Announcements...
United Flight Attendant announced, 'People, people we're not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!
************************************
On landing, the stewardess said, 'Please be sure to take all of your belongings. If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's something we'd like to have. '
*************************************
'There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane'
*************************************
An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a 'Thanks for flying our airline.' He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane.
She said, 'Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?'
'Why, no, Ma'am,' said the pilot. 'What is it?'
The little old lady said, 'Did we land, or were we shot down?'
**************************************
As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Ronald Reagan, a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: 'Whoa, big fella, WHOA!'
*******************************************
After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Memphis, a flight attendant on a Northwest flight announced, 'Please take care when opening the overhead compartments because sure as hell everything has shifted after a landing like that.'
******************* * *****************
Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: 'We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal.'
*************************************
Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas on a particularly windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!'
***********************************
'Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and, in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments.'
**********************************
'As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses......except for that gentleman over there.'
******************************************
Heard on Southwest Airlines just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City. The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, 'That was quite a bump, and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault, it was the asphalt.'
****************************************
After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix , the attendant came on with, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.'
****************************************
Part of a flight attendant's a rrival announcement: 'We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of US Airways.'
****************************************
Heard on a Southwest Airline flight - 'Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing and if you can light 'em, you can smoke 'em.' < A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, 'Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles . The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax... OH, MY GOD!' Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!'
A passenger in Coach yelled, 'That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!

Susan Cullen Named 2009-10 Wicomico Teacher Of The Year
Susan Cullen, a third-grade teacher at Delmar Elementary School, was recognized for her outstanding work in the classroom when she was named 2009-10 Wicomico Teacher of the Year March 19.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen and Board of Education President Robin H. Holloway announced Cullen’s honor at the end of the annual Wicomico County Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet. The 26th annual Wicomico Teacher of the Year Banquet was held at The Commons at Salisbury University with more than 215 people in attendance. "My rewards in being an educator include the 'lightbulb' moments and smiles of self-confidence I see in students when they comprehend a concept," wrote Cullen in her Teacher of the Year writing prompt. "Also, having parents and grandparents partner with me in their child's education. When the year ends, they make a point to thank me for my professionalism, my love of teaching, and for the love and support I have given their family.
Wow! What a humbling experience and a blessing." As Teacher of the Year, Cullen will represent Wicomico County's more than 1,229 teachers. Her nomination for Wicomico Teacher of the Year came from a parent who said, "This teacher inspires students to learn by giving her students partners while reading so they are more interested," and who praised Cullen for being kind, patient and fun while guiding students in learning each day and encouraging them to love reading.
"The homework that the teacher gives is brilliant," said the parent. The homework asks good questions and sets up clear expectations so that as students read and study they work on concentration, recall of important facts, interpretation, learning and using new words, and can even do a creative illustration as part of their answer. The parent called Mrs. Cullen's homework technique "subtle but brilliant."
Wicomico's new Teacher of the Year will begin her year in style, arriving at Delmar Elementary School at 8:45 a.m. Friday chauffeured in a classic 1949 Buick provided for the occasion by Wicomico music teacher and auto enthusiast Buck Burton. Two assemblies will be held in her honor, starting with one at 9 a.m. Cullen will be featured, along with this year's 30 other semifinalists, in a "Working Together for Children" Teacher of the Year special on PAC 14. Later this year, Cullen will represent Wicomico County Public Schools in the Maryland Teacher of the Year contest.
Wicomico is proud to have two former Maryland Teachers of the Year, Bonnie Walston and Aaron Deal, working in its school system on behalf of students. Susan Cullen, 2009-10 Wicomico Teacher of the Year Cullen received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Salisbury University in 1995. She has taught for nine years, including the past four years in Wicomico schools. She was nominated for Wicomico Teacher of the Year while teaching at West Salisbury Elementary in 2005-06, and twice while teaching at Delmar. She was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society at SU and the Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society at Wor-Wic Community College.
Students in Mrs. Cullen's classroom are accustomed to having instructional technology as part of their daily lessons. "I have become more literate in technology and use it every day in my classroom to meet all learning styles," she said. Technology helps students learn, and its important that her third-graders are trained "in the use of technology that they will need as they grow in this 21st Century." She takes on many extra duties at school, including membership on the West Salisbury Elementary Social Committee and Delmar's Multicultural, Social, Staff Advisory and School Leadership committees, and participation in the Perks for Parents Program at Delmar and PTA. She assisted in creating a Maryland School Assessment (MSA) class to help parents understand the expectations of MSA. She has served as a Destination ImagiNation assistant coach. Cullen is a member of the Wicomico County Education Association and the Maryland State Teachers Association.
Outside of school, she has served at her church as assistant high school Sunday School teacher, volunteer nursery attendant and greeter ministry leader; and has been a parent volunteer for the West Salisbury Little League, Pop Warner Cheerleading and the Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre. Wherever Cullen has lived and worked, she has devoted herself both to her students and to her community. She was an Army family team building instructor and a Family Readiness Group leader at Fort Sill, and elementary curriculum planner and Vacation Bible School teacher at First Baptist East in Lawton, Okla. She received the Molly Pitcher Volunteer Service Award in Fort Sill, Okla. While living in Tennessee, she was a Family Readiness Group volunteer at Fort Campbell, Ky., and an intermediate Sunday School teacher, nursery director, and member of the Praise and Worship Team at Woodlawn Church of the Nazarene.
"My husband's military career has afforded me many opportunities. At various U.S. Army installations and surrounding communities, I have taught prekindergarten, 1st and 5th grades," Cullen said. "Some of my accomplishments were creating a program to teach parents English as a second language, chairing the science department, and working with a diverse group of children from the military, agricultural and Native American communities."
Top Teachers Thirty-one semifinalists were selected to complete a writing prompt and undergo an interview with a blue-ribbon judging panel of former Wicomico teachers of the year. Based on results from the interview and writing exercise, the judging panel chose a finalist to represent each school level. Finalists were, in addition to Cullen for the intermediate level, were Kathy Nottingham, prekindergarten teacher, Wicomico Early Learning Center (Primary); Kimberly Reddish, English teacher, Mardela Middle and High (Middle); and Joe Showacre, Collision Repair teacher, Parkside High School Career & Technology Education (High School). Friend of Education Each year at the Wicomico County Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet, Wicomico also honors a "Friend of Education" who has generously supported Wicomico schoolchildren and schools. This year’s recipient of the “Friend” Award was the Fruitland Community Center, represented by Mary Gladys Jones and Alexis Dashield. Mrs. Jones, a retired educator, has been involved with the Fruitland Community Center since 1982. In 1983, as the center's director, she co-founded its after-school tutorial program for students in the Fruitland area. When financial support for the program waned in 1991, she approached her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, about adopting the program. The Ivy AKAdemy was born and continues to serve Fruitland children. "For almost three decades, Mrs. Jones has committed herself to the children of Fruitland, giving of her time, talents, resources and academic expertise," said Karen Leimann, coordinator of the Wicomico Teacher of the Year Program.
Mrs. Dashield was an employee of Salisbury University and a resident of Fruitland when she became acquainted with the Fruitland Community Center because her youngest son, Julian, was struggling to pass first grade. Mrs. Jones began tutoring Julian, and in less than six months he had caught up with his classmates and went on to achieve academic success. He is now an engineer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. After this personal experience, Mrs. Dashield decided to join Mrs. Jones in dedicating herself to helping the children at the Fruitland Community Center. She has mentored parents, provided services to at-risk and underprivileged children, advocated for children, and brought in other volunteers to continue the important work of the Fruitland Community Center.
"Together, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Dashield advocate for the children of the Fruitland Community Center and provide their students and parents with opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them," Leimann said. "Many times both of these dedicated women have opened their pocketbooks to pay utility, maintenance, and resource bills to keep the center open. They have made the Fruitland Community Center an environment in which students thrive."
