HISTORICAL MOMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER
A NEW CANNING HOUSE TOKEN SURFACES
I have collected canning house tokens for many years and the thrill of putting a new token in my collection never lessens. The tokens were used from the 1860’s to about 1950, with tokens from the Eastern Shore starting to show up around 1875. They were used to pay the workers in the canneries and oysters houses for manual labor and were redeemed for cash either at the end of the day or week. Before the child labor laws, children might work all summer, saving their tokens to cash in for their back-to-school clothes (usually shoes – the clothes were hand made at home). Tokens have also been found that were used to pay the pickers in the fields.
Throughout the years of token collecting, I have acquired many tokens through various means. Swapping with fellow collectors has been the most rewarding. In the old days, doubles were the bounty of any other collector that didn’t have them as long as they had doubles that you could freely select from. The long-gone early collectors that swapped this way are only a memory now that everything has a price attached to it. I still give away my doubles to new collectors that show signs of being in the hobby for the love of it rather than any monetary gain. By doing this, I have cultivated some new collectors here on the Shore, and made some new friends.
As a local historian, the knowledge of tokens is a nice addition to the knowledge found in the local history books. This brings me to tell of the latest token to surface. A local dealer called to tell me of three tokens he bought from a man and wanted to know what they were. They were thick red fiber, 24 mm, and had only the initials WFM incused on them. There weren’t any periods after the initials. The main clue he had was from the man he bought them from. The man said they had belonged to his mother. She worked in the office of the W. F. Messick Ice Co. in Salisbury. There is a W. F. Messick & Bro., Allen, MD, listed in R. Lee Burton’s book, Canneries of the Eastern Shore. It is Wicomico No. 57 and was in business at least from 1919-1922. Further research in Ed Kee’s book, Saving Our Harvest, revealed that W. F. Messick & Bro. is listed in the 1919 Canners Directory. The important piece of research that came out of Ed Kee’s book was the fact that the Messick cannery’s office was in Salisbury, the place of the W. F. Messick Ice Co. I imagine that W. F. Messick kept the books for the cannery at his ice company office in Salisbury.
So, with some solid research to back up my claim that the WFM token is from the Messick cannery in Allen, MD, I have added a new token to my Wicomico County collection.
This is a token that would have been a Maverick at a flea market if the information had not been available to go along with it. As it is, a good token with good attribution has been added to the list of known tokens. As I’ve always said about token collecting – a good hobby is one that you spend more time than money in accumulating your collection.

Suze Orman Gives Advice About Sucking on the Crack Pipe of Phantom Home Equity
Talk about being in complete denial of a bad real estate market, this realtard's income dropped from $136,000.00 in 2007 to less than $40,000.00 in 2008. She has a first, second and third mortgage (for the pool) because she thought that real estate could never go down in value.
These are the same people that were giving you financial advice telling you to make millions using "liar loans" to buy real estate you could not afford just so they could chalk up one more commission.

Roseanne Barr says Jews are acting like their Nazi Mentors by killing the innocents!
Today in an interview with Rosanne World Net Daily listened to Rosanne dispel any myths anyone might have about this last weeks fighting in Gaza. She said if the Zionist financed by their Evangelical Christian friends here in the state would stop acting like their mentors in Nazi Germany, all of this killing would end.
Roseann, brought up in a Jewish and Mormon home and is now practicing Kaballah. Is differentiating between being a traditional Jew, such as an orthodox Jew vs. a Zionist.
Orthodox Jews do not believe that they are entitled to a homeland because of their disobedience to God, until he performs a supernatural miracle that the whole world will see and know it was God who did it, gives them one.
Zionist on the other hand believe that they are entitled to the land that had one time been there own, but after their disobedience they were run out of the region. Until after WWII the UN set up Israel as a state. Doing so, took the people who had been living there (the Palestinians) and displaced them. Imagine, one day you are told that the government is taking your home and you have nothing to say about it. Palestinians had been living in these homes for centuries and one day they were told they had to go. If they did not move there homes were bulldozed. This was in 1948.
Peace has not been in Israel since.
Palestinian were and are understandably resentful.
Originally, the State of Isreal was much bigger, and they have given back much of the land that they once possessed.
But now the problem is the 'Checkpoints'.
Checkpoints are the terror of the average Palestinians existence. These Checkpoints are placed in key areas of the city that Palestinians must walk through to get where they need to go, which could be a store, the hospital, a child's school, work or home.
Reports of abuse by Israeli soldiers has become common place, and there are now groups of Grandma' s who are against the occupation who stand at the checkpoints to make sure the guards act humanely. They believe that young Jewish men and women wouldn't misbehave in front of their grandmothers so they won't be inhumane in front of these ladies.
In recent years men have been beaten at the checkpoints for not having the correct papers, one while on the way to the hospital where his wife was dying.
Pregnant women have been forced to give birth on the ground at a check point.
Children must pass through them to get to school and they are afraid to go alone, so parents go with them, and the parents are often detained for know reason when on the way back home .
Peace needs to come to this region. It wasn't until the formation of Hammas that attacks from the Palestinian side have become so deadly. Hamas isn't only relying on suicide bombers any longer, they have now developed rockets that go further into Israel. However, when Israel strikes back it often hits civilians because the quarters in Gaza are so cramped they cant go out into the field to battle. They liken it to having a war in downtown Detroit.
The fighting has got to stop. The casualties are so bad, last week there was no room in the morgue! With another 6 Children dead the death toll has risen to 318.
All with the financial backing, support and weapons from the good ole USA.
Our priorities are deeply messed up. I remember sitting in a church service and the plate being passed and the money was going to be sent to Israel. The pastor was quoting the passage in the Bible where we are instructed to be a friend to Israel, and therefore we shall be blessed. At the time, I thought what I was doing was a good thing yet now I question my actions.
Each and every human being should have a place to call home, but we can't call it home if we take it from someone else. Even if the Government says that we can. Because eventually one day those people are going to become resentful, and they have.
There are many many millions of Jews who reside right here in America, and we have been very gracious in giving them visa's. There is more than enough room for all of these folks to live together, but they have to be as committed to the process of peace as they are their Gods.
Go here to read the Rosanne article and feel free to click through the related articles on this subject. It is very complex and leaves everyone very uncomfortable if the wrong thing is said. but things have become very serious and the Granny's and even Roseanne are imploring the soldiers not to obey orders, of searching of homes in the middle of the night, or detaining someone for no reason or whatever. They just need to stop.
A LOVE STORY
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky always 0D stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box. It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease.... in fact; she was just sure it was fatal.
She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong.
She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Remember....live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget....the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us.

Updates From This Week's News
We reported a serious accident in Berlin this week and I came to learn of some new details I thought you might find interesting. The young men in the Navy that were speeding on Rt. 50 more than likely didn't know they had raced through a Radar Trap doing 108 miles per hour.
By the time the Berlin Police could start a pursuit these guys were well past them and probably didn't even know they were being chased when they crashed into the suburban at the High School.
On New Years Eve there were many problems in the City of Salisbury. I was told they had to close down Brew River because of fights.
I was also told that there was another major fight in or near Flavors of Italy as well. Funny, I didn't see any of this information put out elsewhere?

Wicomico Board Of Education Bans Salisbury News
"Joe,
What's up? I am a WCBOE employee and have noticed that they have blocked Salisbury News.
I guess they wanted to censor us from you. What's up with that. I didn't think you would be one to take something like that laying down. Yet so far I haven't heard a peep.
Sincerely,
A. Reader"
I will pass your concern on to our County Executive Rick Pollitt and the County Council and see what they can do about getting us back on line.
Two weeks ago Salisbury News was the first outlet to expose the armed robbery that put many local schools in lock down. The Teachers were highly concerned and wanted to know what was going on so they tried to access Salisbury News to find out. That is when many learned Salisbury News was being blocked. The Teachers then started ringing my phone off the hook and I was able to inform them of everything that was going on at the time and they were very comfortted to know what was up. NO OTHER News Organization had the information!
I'm confident the WCBOE doesn't want to be challenged by my attorneys but if that's what it will take to allow us to get back on line with them they can expect to hear from them by the end of next week if they don't comply beforehand. Censorship like this in an in educational facility is Un American and if they want to give me free publicity Nation Wide for pulling such a stunt, then so be it.
My guess is that the County Executive's Office is NOT aware of this and will do everything in their powers to reverse it immediately. If you can access the Daily Times, WMDT or WBOC, they're in very deep trouble.

Warning – Identity Theft Ring Targeting DelMarVa
An identity theft ring is targeting the residents of DelMarVa. They have also hit other parts of the country.
There are engaged in a cold call in what is known as a phishing scheme They appear to be targeting the elderly, the desperatre or the gullible.
This theft ring has been traced to Pensacola, FL, but there is no further information since the wheels of justice are backlogged.
This identity theft ring has been going on for well over the last two months
Numerous complaints have been filed with the Federal Trade commission ( Who is suppose to regulate this, but so far they have done nothing. Even though the exact location can be traced! )
Here is how to recognize the scammers.
If you have Caller – ID, The number will come up as “Unknown Name” or “Name Unavailable” ( depending on your phone service). It WILL show the following number:
850-432-3928
If you call the numder back you will get a recording that it is no longer a working number. If it isn't "working" how do they call us? and its a non working number!
If you answer you will get a recorded robo-call calling about "your credit card" but it never mentions what card, who they're calling,
If you wait and get a “live person” you will encounter a woman with a heavy spanish accent. Her pitch is that she can help lower your credit card bills. They will only identify themselves as “Credit Services”
If you ask her what credit card she is talking about, she will answer “Both Visa and Master Card”.
Yet she knows nothing about your account. If she asks for your credit card or account number, don’t give it to her. Instead ask “Don’t you already have that information?”
Typcially, these schemes work by them asking for your credit card number or the name of your bank and account number.
If you ask to be taken off their list, you will usually get a rude remark then they will hang up only to call a day or two later.
One person acuually got a little further:
“They offered to lower my credit card payments, as long as I had more than $3,000 in debt. Eventually the first representative transferred me to a floor supervisor. I asked where they were based, and they said Atlanta, Georgia. I asked if they could give me the name of their company, and they asked why. I said because you are asking me to give you my credit card number, so I'd like to find out how you are. Then they hung up.” - Brooklynite - Source:

While the following techniques usually work on others phishing. This one doesn’t seem to take the hint that you are not interested. The will keep calling about every other day.
This works for most theft rings
First, make THEM wait! I answer, and don't say anything. Just put the phone down and walk away. They don't like wasting their time waiting on you, even though some calls make YOU wait for an "available representative" when they tell you stay on the line.
Sing in the phone...Row, Row, Row Your Boat works like a charm!
Evidently, they also don't like talking to crazy people? Works a lot better than asking them to take you off their list.
My modem is equipped with caller ID. It can be programmed to hang up on any number.

I'm Game For Having This As A Post
Bigger Than Bush
By PAUL KRUGMAN

As the new Democratic majority prepares to take power, Republicans have become, as Phil Gramm might put it, a party of whiners.
Some of the whining almost defies belief. Did Alberto Gonzales, the former attorney general, really say, “I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror”? Did Rush Limbaugh really suggest that the financial crisis was the result of a conspiracy, masterminded by that evil genius Chuck Schumer?
But most of the whining takes the form of claims that the Bush administration’s failure was simply a matter of bad luck — either the bad luck of President Bush himself, who just happened to have disasters happen on his watch, or the bad luck of the G.O.P., which just happened to send the wrong man to the White House.
The fault, however, lies not in Republicans’ stars but in themselves. Forty years ago the G.O.P. decided, in effect, to make itself the party of racial backlash. And everything that has happened in recent years, from the choice of Mr. Bush as the party’s champion, to the Bush administration’s pervasive incompetence, to the party’s shrinking base, is a consequence of that decision.
If the Bush administration became a byword for policy bungles, for government by the unqualified, well, it was just following the advice of leading conservative think tanks: after the 2000 election the Heritage Foundation specifically urged the new team to “make appointments based on loyalty first and expertise second.”
Contempt for expertise, in turn, rested on contempt for government in general. “Government is not the solution to our problem,” declared Ronald Reagan. “Government is the problem.” So why worry about governing well?
Where did this hostility to government come from? In 1981 Lee Atwater, the famed Republican political consultant, explained the evolution of the G.O.P.’s “Southern strategy,” which originally focused on opposition to the Voting Rights Act but eventually took a more coded form: “You’re getting so abstract now you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is blacks get hurt worse than whites.” In other words, government is the problem because it takes your money and gives it to Those People.
Oh, and the racial element isn’t all that abstract, even now: Chip Saltsman, currently a candidate for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, sent committee members a CD including a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” — and according to some reports, the controversy over his action has actually helped his chances.
So the reign of George W. Bush, the first true Southern Republican president since Reconstruction, was the culmination of a long process. And despite the claims of some on the right that Mr. Bush betrayed conservatism, the truth is that he faithfully carried out both his party’s divisive tactics — long before Sarah Palin, Mr. Bush declared that he visited his ranch to “stay in touch with real Americans” — and its governing philosophy.
That’s why the soon-to-be-gone administration’s failure is bigger than Mr. Bush himself: it represents the end of the line for a political strategy that dominated the scene for more than a generation.
The reality of this strategy’s collapse has not, I believe, fully sunk in with some observers. Thus, some commentators warning President-elect Barack Obama against bold action have held up Bill Clinton’s political failures in his first two years as a cautionary tale.
But America in 1993 was a very different country — not just a country that had yet to see what happens when conservatives control all three branches of government, but also a country in which Democratic control of Congress depended on the votes of Southern conservatives. Today, Republicans have taken away almost all those Southern votes — and lost the rest of the country. It was a grand ride for a while, but in the end the Southern strategy led the G.O.P. into a cul-de-sac.
Mr. Obama therefore has room to be bold. If Republicans try a 1993-style strategy of attacking him for promoting big government, they’ll learn two things: not only has the financial crisis discredited their economic theories, the racial subtext of anti-government rhetoric doesn’t play the way it used to.
Will the Republicans eventually stage a comeback? Yes, of course. But barring some huge missteps by Mr. Obama, that will not happen until they stop whining and look at what really went wrong. And when they do, they will discover that they need to get in touch with the real “real America,” a country that is more diverse, more tolerant, and more demanding of effective government than is dreamt of in their political philosophy.

Two Critically Injured After Alleged DUI Crash
By INNAE PARK -- WMDT 1/1/2009
Two people are in critical condition after police say their SUV was hit by a driver who's been charged with DUI.
On New Year's Eve, Berlin officials say they chased a car that was going 108 mph in a 50 mph zone.
They say the vehicle crashed into the SUV at the intersection of Route 50 and Seahawk Road.
Officials say they also found a loaded gun in the car following the crash, and both driver and passenger were active duty Navy personnel.
Police say five people involved have been released from the hospital.
The remaining two are still in the ICU.
It is now January 3rd, 2009 and these are all the Top Stories for WMDT? I'll give them credit. They at least had the driver doing 108 MPH but they neglected to mention they had gone through a speed trap and this is how the Berlin Police knew they were going that fast.
Looks like WMDT is falling days behind Salisbury News along with the rest of the local MSM. "More News In Less Time?" More like 3 days late and a dollar short to me. It's no wonder so many people are turning to Salisbury News for the most recent and updated news and information. Everyone else is simply making it very easy for us to be Delmarva's News Leader. Sound familiar? LOL Oh, I should add. Isn't it interesting how the Daily Times no longer puts a time stamp on their articles! I WONDER WHY???????
