A Letter To The Editor

Dear Council and Mayor,

I have lived in Salisbury since I was 4 years old. My wife moved here after high school to go to Salisbury University where she obtained a Master's degree in business. We have both work locally since we've lived here. I worked for two family run businesses, one of which was on the plaza. I have lived on the plaza and in various neighborhoods in town in my adult life.

I want you to be aware of my background because I am a homeowner (hence taxpayer), live and work here (again with the taxes) and have always intended to keep my skills here to be a benefit to the economy in this area. I believe we live in one of the most unique and beautiful places in the world.

My wife is now scared to live here and wants us to sell our home and move across the bridge to D.C. I'll let that sink in. My wife wants to move from "quiet little Salisbury" to "the big scary city" because she is afraid of crime. Something here is not right. We used to walk in our neighborhood (around Lincoln Ave and before around New York Ave) and now we don't.

We used to walk around the trails in the park. Now we don't.

We used to go out to eat in the evenings. Now we don't.

About the only thing we've spent money on in the last few months is upgrading our alarm system.

I asked my employer today how long it would take of me not doing my job before I was fired. If I came to work, did only a bare minimum, left early everyday and was grossly incompetent. I asked how long before I was let go if I took vacations when our company was in need or failed to work with the other employees or the many vendors we rely on. He said he'd give me a warning and maybe two weeks. I thought that was a bit generous of him. I would fire myself long before that.

I can here the excused brewing in the backs of your heads. I need the support of the rest of the council. I'd need a reason or face litigation if I did what I needed to do. I may have dirt exposed that would hurt my career.

I want to tell you that I don't care. I will not raise a family in a town with multiple, unsolved, broad daylight robberies. With multiple shootings. I can tell you this though, I will live here long enough to make sure each and every one of you never holds public office on the Eastern Shore again.

I will forward this email to everyone I know. I will send it to everyone I meet. I will post it on every blog and news organizations website. It will go on Facebook and Myspace.

My message is simple and clear. Take action now. Fire our grossly incompetent, absent, uncooperative, selfish, coward of a Police Chief. Ensure our police force has the resources necessary to fight the crime in this town. Utilize the existing resources and cooperation of our neighboring law enforcement. Most importantly stop considering your best interest over that of the community you serve because everyone else in this city that works doesn't get the same luxury. I have to consider the needs of my customers over my own, why shouldn't you?

If any of you think my email has been unreasonable I would have to assume you've entered politics for your own self-satisfaction and will vote accordingly. If you think I'm being threatening, imagine how I feel driving home at night. That's pretty threatening.

Thank you for your attention and please search inside yourselves, our poor city is dying. I don't care about Republican vs. Democrat, liberal vs. conservative or past feuds. I want clear, decisive and prompt action.

Sincerely,

Matthew C. Green

  2. Mr. Green, I like the way you think and speak. In the rare event that something does get done about our problems and things start getting better and (most importantly) if you wife decides to maybe stick it out - I would hope you will run for some type of office around here. We need intelligent thinkers who can articulate their ideas and are courageous enough to sign their own name. You seem to fit the bill.

  3. I applaud your stance, but come on now:

1)"....we live in one of the most unique and beautiful places in the world." I'm going to need you to spend some time off of the Eastern Shore.

2)if you are that scared in salisbury that you no longer walk or go out to eat, you'll be scared anywhere that you live.

Yes, fight crime here in Salisbury. But lets not stretch the truth while doing so.

    Are you kidding????
I don't believe that truth was stretched whatsoever!!!
I do not live in Salisbury, but I do work there and I am definitely afraid to be in Salisbury!
There is no stretch of the truth in his letter in my opinion and I'd be willing to bet there are MANY more who feel the same way he does!
My mother in law lives alone in the City and I fear for her EVERY day! Moving her is NOT an option but I can tell you that she stays closed up in her house 24/7 unless someone is there with her, so don't post something that tries to make it seem like there is no crime in Salisbury!
Guess you are a friend of Chief Webster and he has brainwashed you as well!
The City needs to fire this Webster NOW and get somebody in there who is interested in the job of SERVE and PROTECT!

  5. We do live in a unique and beautiful area.I have travelled all over the US and I can attest to that.

But move to DC in order to "feel safe" ?.....now that is totally illogical.

  6. Taken from wikipedia.org

“Hyperbole...meaning excess or exaggeration) is a figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally.”

I find it interesting that within my letter only two points have been challenged. First, that there is nothing unique or interesting or beautiful about the Eastern Shore. In actuality the Eastern Shore has a very storied and historical background. I have traveled from South Dakota to Maine to Florida in the United States and have traveled to Italy, France and England and I have never encountered a place like it. Admittedly, however, a place's beauty is determined by individual preference.

Hopefully my second point was addressed by the definition above. I feel very strongly about the growing crime in our area. Within blocks of my home there have been stabbings, shootings and dropped off murder victims. I don't consider walking to be wise in my neighborhood, particularly after dark.

My wife and I do go out to eat and we do things in the evening, however, what was intended by my comment was to illustrate how we make these decisions. Would I give more consideration to eating on a “good” side of town in a well lit area over eating on a “bad” side of town with a dark parking lot? My point in my letter was simply this; In the last year we've made changes in our thinking and lifestyle to accommodate a decrease in our feelings of safety. We are accommodating criminal activity and I will not stand for it any longer.

As for there not being a crime problem, Salisbury Police Department's own statistics listed on the City Council website as Crime Prevention Newsletter #21 list part one crimes as being up 11% YTD with rape up 40% alone. I think I deserve to be concerned for my wife.

    Thanks for everyone's comments.

  7. I'm hoping Mr. Green doesn't have any outstanding warrants or isn't illegally parked in the city. Because one thing is for sure, he's being checked out by the 3rd floor gang at SPD headquarters right now. Good news is they're leaving Joe Albero alone for a moment while they're checking out Matthew Green.
    Bad news Salisbury strikes again.

  8. Matthew C. Green for Mayor!

  9. 10:52 You are absolutely right. I thought the same thing when I saw Laurie Jones on WBOC last night. It is common practice for Webster (through Tyler) to "check out" those who speak out against him or SPD. Jones and Green can expect calls and/or visits to comfort them. Webster has done this for years.

  10. I work in Salisbury on the Plaza. I had considered moving here since I travel 60 miles each day and the price of gas sometimes drains me. However, there is just too much crime in this city for me to live here, especially considering that I am a single female. If you think gang crime isn't a problem, you are very very naive.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 10:57, couldn't have said it better myself! I've been on the receiving end of some of those calls. Anyone who thinks the Gestapo perished when Nazi Germany did doesn't know Chiefy well enough.

  12. Mr Green is a wonderful person. He is just speaking the truth and speaking for many of the rest of us. He just had the guts to sign his name! Mr Webster must be very scared himself that he can't take the heat of negative comments, doesn't that come with being in office? I can't believe he checks out everyone who says negative comments, how shallow! Whatever Chiefy get another job in another contry. Let Mike Lewis Fix YOUR MESS UP. Step up to the plate quickly Mr Ireton....oh you may to take off work at school to work on this....

  13. Well move on Matt... Because you and your wife will see this kind of stuff in any city, county, state, or even country for that matter... As long as there is Politics involved, it is always their intention to do best for them not others they server, I went to HS with you, I know your smarter than that to think it will change and soon at that...

Note 1: YOU ALLOWED THIS BY VOTING THEM IN... END OF STORY..

Note 2: WHEN YOU HAVE 2 PEOPLE YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM AND THEY BOTH ARE NOT RIGHT FOR THE JOB, YOU HAVE TO PICK THE LESSER OF THE 2 EVILS... THIS WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN WHEN YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE LIKE THAT... END OF STORY...

Just because the citizens of this county voted in Webster means it's our fault he's not doing his job? Hmm that's funny that you will blame the whole county for the Chief of police not doing what he should to protect the citizens of the county. Yet Mike Lewis and Captain Elliot bend over backwards to help. I do believe Lewis offered 11 deputies to assist in the East Side Deli case and was turned down by the Chief. Is that our fault too? No one ever said the City of Salisbury was the perfect place to live, but the city has dramatically risen in crime over the past fews years and that's what people are upset about. He didn't write that letter expecting results over night...everyone knows this isn't an easy fix, but you have to start someone. The problems are getting worse and not better, so shouldn't the person in charge of the police department be held accoutable? Oh wait, we voted him in so it must be the whole counties fault. I guess Ireton better exile everyone out of town.

  15. Matt, ignore all the haters. You are right as rain, everything you said hit home for alot of people.
Anyone who thinks all is well in Salisbury needs to lay off the booze and/or dope for a few days and really look around.Thugs EVERYWHERE!Graffiti everywhere.Brazen daylight robberies on almost a daily basis.Add to that mix an impotent law enforcement leader and you have Salisbury.
And before someone considers suing me,I did not mean sexually impotent,I meant just plain useless.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 12:48 uhhhhhh Webster was NOT voted in. You lost all your credibility with that opening statement so go back to school and try again next year.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah Matt you made a couple of good points--- but this is what I dont understand. Since East Side Deli and other businesses in the area had been rob a week or so earlier-- were the Police increasing patrols in that area. Maybe once an hour or how bout an escort to the Bank at closing. Got to be visible for those scums to know you are around. With a staff of almost 100 plus the county sheriffs you would think there would be Police everywhere--- But I dont see them that much around Salisbury especially later in the day or at night. And what is up with those Police Substation that they have all thru out the city-- are they still using them.

  18. Thank you 9:42. "most beautiful place in THE WORLD!!!???!?!? This was meant as a joke, right? Instead of trying to sugar coat what things are, be truthful, it will set you free. Anywhere that is as dangerous as here isnt beautiful.

"Scary Big City"??? I lived in one of those for years and never had any problems with crime till I moved here, the supposed best place on earth. There is nothing wrong with being passionate about something, but that statement said by any local person tells me that they are truly ignorant to what the world has to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Amen!!! I don't live in the city either, but I work at hospital and you are afraid to even walk to your car in the parking garage because you never know what or who may be waiting for you.
As for someone saying we don't live in one of the most beautiful places around, you are full of it. I can step out my door and look at a stream in a woods that looks just like pictures I have seen in magazines, I can get on my boat and take long rides down the nanticoke river and see all the wildlife and it feel as if this part of the world has never been touched by human hands.
As for the crime in the city I get to see roll through the doors of the ER of PRMC everynight, people being shot by hoodlums with no conscious. People of the city and the county need to stand together in our neighborhoods and put an end to crime, as long as you stay locked up in your house scared of what might happen you are letting these hoodlums win this war on crime. Carry protection, carry a gun, protect yourself. A good lawyer can get you off if you shoot one of these pieces of $hit in protection of yourself.

  20. To Anon 12:30 pm

Elections are by majority vote in Salisbury so I might have voted for those currently in office or I might not have voted for them. In my letter I state I will not vote for anyone in the future without action being taken to correct the crime in our town. I don't understand the implication that I've not excercised my rights.

Also you stated "END OF STORY". Since elected officials job is to listen to the concerns of the people in realtime this is not the end of the story. I have voiced my concerns and I have received some very heartfelt and meaningful responses from many of the politicians I emailed. It was not made clear by the post here but I emailed all the members of the City Council and Mayor Ireton exactly what is posted here.

Lastly, I hope you're doing well.

    To Anon 1:59 pm

You bring up some great questions. I plan to attend the council meeting on Monday night and I urge you to ask those questions yourself if you will be able to attend. You can also locate contact information for Sheriff Lewis on the County Police website if you have any questions for him. Feel free to ask here as well. I'd be happy to look up any contact information you need for you.

  21. Mr. Green, you hit the nail square on the head. I'm orig. from a small town near a major metro area & moved here over 21 years ago. My gut gets tied up in knots when my grown daughter goes out anywhere, especially at night. I think I prefer the 1970's riots in Paterson, NJ. Crime is out of control in Salisbury.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1:33 Maybe you should have read the post I was replying to. Regardless of how Webster got his position, there is still a problem and my point was he's not doing his job.

  24. Matt this is a great post. I don't understand why ANYONE feels the need to challenge you. You expressed your feelings and opinions. Everything you said is true. I used to walk to the store in "bad" neighborhoods when I was younger. You couldn't pay me to do it now. People are hurting for money so they are robbing places and people like crazy. Theres no doubt gangs are a problem in Salisbury now. They kill just for initiations. I live in a nice neighborhood and am still scared to go outside alone at night. The people that feel the need to challenge your post are just a**holes that don't have anyone to argue with at home. Who knows if your post will make a difference. Either way its the truth and this is a blog site. So good job Matt! More people should speak out like you have.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm not challenging your view point on crime. Its to the point of embarrassment for the local police agencies. But to make "blanket" statements about other major cities being scary is down right ignorant. That just like driving down church st in Salisbury and saying that everywhere here is just like it. Rivers and streams untouched by humans with wildlife is all over this beautiful country. Skyline Drive in W VA is beautiful, Red Rock Canyon in Nevada, likewise, the beach at Assateague. All great examples, but to say that Salisbury is one of the most beautiful is a HUGE stretch.

  26. When you hide in your house the criminals win. People need to more visible, keep an eye out, walk your neighborhood. Get a really big dog!

  27. Anon 4:14

How does my opinion on beauty cause you to become so angry? I'm not saying you have to feel like Salisbury is beautiful, but I do and would like to protect it.

Also, I'm not saying that every neighborhood is like Church St. My point is, NO neighborhood should be like Church St.

Just some quick statistics. I don't have time to break each Salisbury neighborhood down by crime type (i.e. part one or not) so I'll use the basic calls for service stats from the Salisbury PD website.

    Church St. - 60
    Downtown - 65
    Northside - 96 (mostly businesses)
    Eastside - 51
    Princeton - 76
    Westside - 108

These are basic statistics so it's not just part one crime. So you are right Anon 4:14, not every neighborhood is like Church St. Some are much, much worse.

  29. 9:42 I was raised here and couldn't get away fast enough after high school. I lived in a place most of you vacation. Yes, it's beautiful but trust me, that beauty goes away once you live there year round. It took me several years but after 12 long years I returned home to the Eastern Shore. Yes, it's nothing fancy but in my eyes it's beautiful. As for being scared after dark in Salisbury, I agree with that 100%! I do whatever I need to during daylight hours. As long as Salisbury is like it currently is I will not do anything after dark. My life is too important to me.

  30. Matt, well said! I'm behind you with everything you said.

At least in DC you know there IS crime so you expect it. If you listen to Webster and certain council members Salisbury doesn't have crime so you don't know to feel safe or not. Trust me, it's not safe!

    ReplyDelete
  31. >> Well move on Matt... Because you and your wife will see this kind of stuff in any city, county, state, or even country for that matter...

True, this will be seen anywhere, HOWEVER, that is not the point of his letter. He specifically addressed that his wife wants to move to DC (where the crime is higher). The point is that the town isn't doing anything about the crime they have and they need to be. The fact that they are considering leaving a small place like Salisbury because of crime really does says something huge and should be taken as very threatening to the local government.

Active and tax paying citizens are a town's lifeblood and the possibility of losing good, tax paying citizens is the worst thing that can happen to a town.

It doesn't take much to get other people on board, and as you can see by the other comments, this is something that most people agree with (even if they are absurdly contesting someone's opinion on a beautiful unique town). You really don't want your good neighbors to be moving out, it only hurts the whole community.

The "If you don't like it, then leave" idea has no merit in this case and I believe honestly will only add to the problem as a whole. Crime on this scale in such a small college town is something you should be be fighting against, not telling one of your better citizens to move on.

I'd love for Matt and his wife to the DC area, I think we could be good friends. I mean we always need more concerned citizens who are actually willing to do something, even if it is a simple as writing a letter to the editor.

  32. A 'Concealed carry permit' would help solve the crime problem....they'd be less likely to be the shooter if they know they could end up shot =)

  33. Hey I have lived here all of my live too which is probably longer than anyone on this blog except for George C. I too am ready to move. This is just disgusting. Three years ago the police would not admit we have gangs, but we did. The officers that are at Bennett School have told me how these boys talk to them and they can't do anything about it. Basically, they admit they belong to gangs, but being one on one with these kids they can't do one thing about what they "tell" them! It seems there is no "good end in sight" and yes there are safer places to live. I think Annapolis is probably saver than Salisbury right now. JMO

  34. Matt,
I know you, if they can find a blemish in your past to use against you then they surely have way too much time on their hands. Why focus on the events, find facts and prosecute when you can silence the descent of concerned citizens by using IP addresses, log ins, background checks, credit reports, search histories and the like. People whom are concerned leave trails b/c they voluntarily participate in a method of communication that requires identification.
    1984 anyone?
I live two blocks from the most recent robery and shooting which happened while I was having dinner with my wife and three children, but b/c of zoning I am not a city resident and could not vote. Salisbury is a patchwork of city services based on tax income. I am surrounded on all sides by the city, but have none of the rights or services. Every night since I've lived in this house I've walked my dogs down a quite street filled with dark houses of sleeping citizens, tonight every light is on and all dogs are nervously barking from all sides. It seems even the animals are in tune to the situation. I've been to Paris, Lourdes, Rome, every state east of the Mississippi and the entire west coast as well as most points in between. This is an incredibly unique and beautiful place, despite the naysayers posting this cold and uneasy evening. Find whom I am, smear me and make my life uncomfortable as as I surely have more to hide of my past than Matt. Or, take some of that anger and frustration out by getting out of your patrol car and walking the streets, making your presence known. Do as I do and bless your dogs to longer walks and check in on your neighbors houses. I may not agree with their social or political agenda's thoughts or ideals, but I will stand outside their houses with my dog and cell in hand if I think something is a rye.
I will work late into the night on my work laptop, keeping a weary eye to the shadows under the street lights and the barking of dogs, I will keep close awareness of locks, lights, children and instruments of defense. I may not sleep well, I may not perform my best to my clients, but I will rest assured that my family is safe as long as someone is keeping watch. Speak to your neighbors, speak to your elected officials, ask the person behind the counter how their week has been. If we don't feel safe in our houses how do they feel behind a short counter, covered in lottery tickets and surrounded by items of interest for those whom desire to take the easy road to acquisition of money.
I will digress, but will return, as I will not sleep this eve for I know that my family and neighbors are dependent on my watchful eye.
What ever you need Matt, let me know. Everyone has left dirty laundry about, its only a matter of time.
Moderation has been enabled, I will speak even if my voice trembles.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Bravo and thank you, Matt. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I live just a few blocks away from you, and I completely understand the fears that you and your wife have about the growing crime in our city. When my husband and I bought our home in '05, this was a quiet neighborhood filled with families. Since then, we've watched many of those families move away to safer areas outside of the city. I was shocked and angered a month or so ago to find that the family across the street was robbed at gunpoint on their own front porch for nothing but pocket change and a cell phone. They have already moved out. It turns my stomach that when I take my dog out to use the bathroom at night I have to check the yard for prowlers first.

To those who say that we should turn tail and run, tell me this: Am I supposed to take a loss on the sale of my home when no one is interested in purchasing a home in a crime ridden neighborhood?
