BREAKING NEWS! Daily Times Lays Off Employees Today

It has been reported Gannett Publications will lay off some 501 people today. We are still awaiting how this will affect the Daily Times but we do know in the Worcester County Times a photographer and a Receptionist has already been laid off. I received a call telling me that one company that was expecting someone to finish a job today won't be returning, so that may be yet another person in a small office in Worcester County/Ocean City.

I have been told that the top brass here in Salisbury are roaming the building laying off people as they go along. That sure is a crappy way of laying people off. Call a meeting and get it over with right then and there. However, to be sitting there all day long wondering if you have a job or not flat out SUCKS!

I'm sure there will be more to come, perhaps even from the Daily Times. For the most current updates throughout the day you can visit the Gannett Blog.

  1. Not good news for an area already with tons of other layoffs. When(if) this economy ever bounces back where are all these jobs going to come from? There hasnt been real life sustaining work on the shore for a while and this isnt making it better.

Laid off in Salisbury: sports editor, 1 copy editor, 1 photographer (plus maybe 1 photog in Ocean City), daytime production shift (moved to Wilmington). 1 copy editor moved to classifieds.

  5. Joe stop being so gleeful. Do you realize lay-offs cost you and me money? It is shameful that you and your "pets" are wishing for people be laid off. Try to be more compassionate because but for the grace of God it could be us. Or at least me because for all I know Joe and his jerks who want businesses shut down so taxpapers can support the unemployeed, might already be living off government subsidy. How would (do) you feel with no job?

  6. Frankly, my dear, they are ALL worthless - starting at the top.

  7. ROTFLMAO!

If you think anyone should feel sorry for those people still working at the Daily Times and they haven't been out looking for new jobs, that's their fault.

Oh, by the way, I'd rather pay my taxes for the people that lost their jobs than suppost an a-hole president who gives our money to corporate america, like the Banking Industry or Car Manufacturers.

    Use your head man.

  8. You think they haven't been looking? Can ANYONE find a job anywhere, let alone on Delmarva?

  9. Yes, I think they haven't been looking. Again, the question was did I want to pay more taxes, (more or less) because these people lost their jobs. My answer again is, yes, I would rather pay those kind of taxes than support Obamanomics and Corporate America.

  10. And who didn't see this coming? Obviously, the remaining employees at the DT still don't get it. Here's a word these people should consider: resume.

  11. You all amaze me! People are losing their jobs and your "joking" about it. How many newspapers are there in the Wicomico/Worcester area? One? How are these people supposed to get another job? Change professions? Or would you rather they move all together? Easier said than done! As far as Obamanomics goes--this is part of it. Take money from 1 and give it to the other. America needs to wake up--this will continue to happen more and more.

  12. Unfortunately for some of the employees at DT's, they are working in a field which is going by the wayside. It happens! Not just to the DT's but to other industries as well.
As far as feeling sorry for them, the ones who DID do their job, yes, I feel for them, the ones who helped to put DT's in the financial position and negative position in the local communities, no, I do not feel bad for them!
Ever heard of a few bad apples spoiling the whole bunch? Well, here you have it, don't ya!

  13. Joe, you *KNOW* the sports editor at DT (Shawn Yonker) and I *thought* you liked him!?!

  14. What ever the Big Issue is with some of you people about the Times, You need to put it to rest! People are losing their jobs! Those that are gleeful sound like a bunch of elementary school kids! Grow Up!

  15. I don't want to see Shanie lose her job, she's had enough financial troubles to last a lifetime. Actually, I don't like hearing of anyone losing their livelihood or homes. These are hard times and I fear they are only going to get harder.

Maybe those that have been laid off can pick up work for the other MSM outlets. I wish you all good luck finding employment and hope you can keep your heads above water.

  16. They should start downsizing buy stop throwing that free garbage newspaper I don't ask for in my yard or most times on my sidewalk.

They wouldn't layoff shanie, too much inside info

  17. Am I missing something here? I don't see where anyone can find this post "gleeful," nor do I see anyone wishing for people to lose their jobs, with the exception of anonymous 1:43. Joe has criticized the DT's method of informing those who have been laid off, and rightfully so.

Maybe someone can tell me exactly which lines I should read between, because I just don't get how anyone sees this post as gleeful.

I have a good friend who read the writing on the wall and jumped ship before they had a chance to lay him off. If the remaining staff at the DT can't see how fast their ship is sinking and make a move to get off the ship, well...they needn't act surprised when they go down with the ship.

  18. We knew well in advance that layoffs would be coming in July and in fact what day. The process was done tactfully with respect and dignity. I was one to lose my position. To those of you who have found joy on bashing this company. Congratulations, you finally have something to smile about. Unfortunatley, myself, wife and daughter do not share in your amusement. Stop hiding your petty comments behind anonymous and let us see who you really are. Thank you Daily Times for years of employment and enjoyment. I would return in a heartbeat.
