GANNETT REPORTS 9.5% REVENUE FALL

Gannett Company Inc. - The Daily Times parent company -reported yet another dramatic decline in revenues. Gannett reported just hours ago that their publishing advertising revenue plummeted 16.8% from year ago levels.

Their stock - GCI- continues to tread at record low levels as bad news seems to bestow the publishing company.

First of all, The Metro has never stated that they are a news source.
Second of all, I work for The Metro and I personally COUNTED those ballots. If a company chooses to ask their employees to vote, then I don't see that as being unreasonable. Many employees don't have to ask their customers because they are great companies.

I personally counted and called everyone that filled out a ballot...fake or not. If no one answered, then we called back a few days later. You are given 4 chances to answer and confirm. Some of the time, we are given fake phone numbers...which we don't count, or the person did not fill out the ballot; therefore, we don't count that vote either. You must tell us that you did indeed fill out the ballot. It does NOT matter who advertises with us. This is a "Reader's Poll." Plain and simple. Whoever has the most votes wins...advertiser or not.

Anyone who wants to see the votes can. We have them in our computer on a counting system and printed as well. So for those non-believers and people who want to wish that this poll is rigged...we have the results right here. All the ballots are filed accordingly and saved over the years.

AIG 85 Billion Dollar Bail Out

The government has agreed to bail out the 'world's largest insurer' - AIG - for $85 billion.

I don't get it!

AIG paid almost a billion dollars to have their name on the jersey of English soccer giants Manchester United a few years ago.

Then the company goes on to make more shitty business decisions AND then they get 85 BILLION as a hand out from Uncle Sam?

Will the U.S. tax payers get the profits of AIG since we're bailing them out?

Life is so unfair for the regular guy! This was probably for the best, though. Right?????

"Will the neocons who tutored George W. Bush in the ideology he pursued to the ruin of his presidency do the same for Sarah Palin?

Should they succeed, they will destroy her. Yet, they are moving even now to capture this princess of the right and hope of the party.

In St. Paul, Palin was told to cancel a meeting with Phyllis Schlafly and pro-life conservatives. McCain's operatives said Palin had to rest for her Wednesday convention speech.

Yet, on Tuesday, Palin was behind closed doors with Joe Lieberman and officials of the Israeli lobby AIPAC. There, according to The Washington Post, Palin took and passed her oral exams.

"Palin assured the group of her strong support for Israel, of her desire to see the United States move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and of her opposition to Iran's aspirations to become a nuclear power, according to sources familiar with the meeting."

AIPAC's mission, like that of Likud, is to goad America into launching air and missile strikes on any and all Iranian nuclear facilities.

AIPAC went away happy. Purred spokesman Josh Block, "We were pleased that Gov. Palin expressed her deep personal commitment to the safety and well-being of Israel."

Heading home to Alaska to prepare for her interview with Charlie Gibson, Palin was escorted by Randy Scheunemann, McCain's foreign policy guru and, until March, a hired agent of the Tbilisi regime.

Scheunemann's lobbying assignment: Bring Georgia into NATO, so U.S. troops, like 19-year-old Track Palin, will be required to fight Russia to defend a Saakashvili regime that has paid Randy and his partner $730,000.

Reportedly, a phone conversation was held between Saakashvili and Palin, in which Palin committed herself to the territorial integrity of Georgia, though South Ossetia and Abkhazia have declared independence and been recognized by Moscow, which now has troops in both.

Also on Palin's plane was Steve Biegun, formerly of Bush's National Security Council, and Scheunemann's choice to tutor her. Of Biegun, Steven Clemens of the New American Foundation says, "He will turn her into an advocate of Cheneyism and Cheney's view of national security issues."

During her interview with Gibson, Palin often took a neocon line. Three times she said that, should Israel decide to attack Iran, the United States should not "second guess" Israel's decision or interfere.

This contradicts U.S. policy. Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs, has warned Israel not to attack Iran, as the United States does not want a "third front." And the Pentagon is withholding crucial weapons the Israelis want and need to carry out any such attack.

Palin also volunteered that the Russian invasion was "unprovoked," though Georgia attacked South Ossetia first. She followed up by saying that Georgia and Ukraine should be brought into NATO.

Would that mean America would have to go to war with Russia on behalf of Georgia in any new conflict, asked Gibson.

"Perhaps so," said Palin.

Scheunemann should get a fat severance check from Saakashvili for that one.

One ex-White House aide at American Enterprise Institute, asked by Tim Shipman of the Daily Telegraph if AEI sees Palin as a "project," replied: "Your word, not mine. ... But I wouldn't disagree with the sentiment. ... She's bright, and she's a blank page. She's going places, and it's worth going there with her."

In fairness to Palin, on issues like NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia, her answers reflect the views of the man who chose her. She has no option at present but to follow the line laid down by Scheunemann.

But make no mistake. Sarah Palin is no neocon. She did not come by her beliefs by studying Leo Strauss. She is a traditionalist whose values are those of family, faith, community and country, not some utopian ideology.

Wasilla, Alaska, is not a natural habitat of neoconservatives.

And her unrehearsed answers to Gibson's questions reveal her natural conservatism. Asked if she agrees with the Bush Doctrine, Palin asked for clarification. "In what respect, Charlie?"

Gibson: "Do we have the right of an anticipatory self-defense?"

Yes, said Palin, "if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against (the) American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend."

Exactly. The intelligence must be legit and the threat "imminent."

Interviewed by Alaska Business Monthly in March 2007 on the surge, Palin said, "I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place."

That is not the language of empire or "benevolent global hegemony."

Palin may disappoint many conservatives in the next seven weeks by having to parrot the McCain-neocon line on NATO expansion, NAFTA and a "path to citizenship" for illegal aliens. But the battle for Sarah's soul is not over.

For, again, the lady is no neocon. Nor is the husband Todd, First Dude of Alaska and former member of the "Alaska First" Independence Party.

Fun Day At SU!

From the equine sportsmen of the Renaissance era to a champion stunt
biker of the 21st century, Fun Day: Explore SU brings an afternoon of
entertainment and educational events to campus Saturday, September 20.
Scheduled from 1-5 p.m., the event features two stunt shows by champion
mountain biker Mike Steidley, a Renaissance-themed section complete with
two live jousts and tours of the new Teacher Education and Technology
Center, along with some 50 other family fun activities. Steidley
demonstrates the “ups and downs” of stunt cycling at 1:15 and 3 p.m.
on the Fun Day Green. For those who prefer their entertainment from
another era, Paragon Jousting holds live Renaissance demonstrations at 2
and 4 p.m. on the Holloway Hall Lawn, along with Renaissance musicians
and strolling squires. A roving caricaturist provides portraits
throughout the day. Another highlight is the SU Chemistry Department’s
annual packed-house “Fire and Ice” demonstration, held in Devilbiss
Auditorium. This exciting show comes complete with explosions and ice
cream. Most festival activities are on the Fun Day Green, the expanse
of lawn between the Rt. 13 parking lot and Henson Science Hall. There
will be an inflatable moon bounce and obstacle course, arts and crafts
such as the Ward Museum’s duck carving with child-safe tools, games,
free prizes, a chance to be photographed with Sammy the Sea Gull and
much more. A hayride provides tours of the campus, stopping at the
Renaissance area, where families may enjoy historic demonstrations as
well as more modern attractions such as a dragon moon bounce. The wagon
also stops by Fulton Hall, with features even more crafts, exhibits and
demonstrations like pottery throwing. Children are encouraged to bring
sneakers for sports clinics or a bathing suit to take a dip in SU’s
pool. SU students, faculty and staff demonstrate some of their unique
talents, from using geographic information systems to take aerial
photographs to playing in bands including Pugsly and Elvis Who?, two of
this year’s live music performers. Paragon Jousting’s performance is
made possible, in part, by a grant from Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council,
awarded by the Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment
for the Arts. Fun Day activities are free and the public is invited.

This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America's supply of convenience store managers, and possible candidates for President of the United States.

And if this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next,
followed by Dell and AOL customer service reps., and then Motel 6 managers.

Obama's Faith Merchandise?


In a bid to appeal to religious voters before McCain snaps them up, the Obama campaign is about to launch a new line of "faith merchandise."

No joke!
The line includes buttons, bumper stickers, and signs with such rallying slogans as "Believers for Barack," "Pro-Family Pro-Obama," and "Catholics for Obama."

The merchandise is intended to be inclusive of all backgrounds of faith, with more specifically-targeted items to be coming soon, such as "Clergy for Change" and "Pro-Israel Pro-Obama."
In the meantime, Obama Deputy Director of Religious Affairs Paul Monteiro said he wanted to get the broader products out "without delay." And with good reason too!


The Catholic vote has traditionally selected the winning presidential campaign every race since 1976, with the exception of Al Gore's 2000 White House bid, so both campaigns have been vying aggressively for it.

Congressional Candidate Andy Harris Visits Salisbury AGAIN




Senator Andy Harris was out early this morning waving signs with supporters across the street from the Gordy Tiger Mart on Rt. 50. Obviously it was making a difference because the post below shows no cars pumping gas and the third photo only shows one car pumping gas. The Shore loves Andy and they should. I'm sure Kratovil will pop out of nowhere towards the end and say how much he loves Salisbury but the reality is, Andy is here all the time and he's ready and willing to take any of your questions and give truthful answers, not simply what you want to hear.

Andy will be visiting Farmer's today as well as the young Chamber of Commerce Members. It's refreshing to see someone working for your vote and asking for your support.

SLAM. Slam. Slam. Slam. Like a scene from a gathering of Mafia dons, the doors of 30 black Lincolns slammed shut as their besuited occupants stepped out into a Manhattan downpour – and into a global financial storm.

That storm broke yesterday, with stock markets tumbling around the world. In London, the FTSE 100 plunged almost 4 per cent to 5204.2. Scotland’s banking giants were among the biggest victims. HBOS slumped 17.5 per cent; Royal Bank of Scotland lost 12.2 per cent. In the US, the Dow Jones industrial average suffered its biggest fall since 9/11.

The collapse effectively began at 6pm last Friday. The place: the offices of the New York Federal Reserve. The occasion: an emergency meeting of the most powerful figures in American banking and finance aimed at staving off a massive bank collapse.

Those who stepped from their limousines to be present included Richard Fuld, the chairman and chief executive of Lehman Brothers; John Mack, the head of Morgan Stanley; Jamie Dimon, of JP Morgan Chase; Vikram Pandit, of Citigroup; Lloyd Blankfein, of Goldman Sachs; Bob Diamond, the head of Barclays Capital; and senior representatives from Mellon Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland.

“We are the biggest overseas bank in America”, explained an RBS spokeswoman. “There was an ‘all points bulletin’ from the Fed and they called us in”.

Awaiting them along one side of the boardroom table was the United States Federal Reserve chairman, Ben Bernanke – nicknamed Helicopter Ben for having slashed interest rates and showered Wall Street with money earlier this year to avoid the very disaster that was about to unfold.

Flanking him was Hank Paulson, the US treasury secretary, and Tom Geithner, chairman of the New York Fed. It was Geithner who opened the meeting – and presented Wall Street’s finest with the fright of their lives.

Powerwave Technologies Is Close To Shutting Down Facility In Salisbury





Powerwave Technologies had built this facility near WorWic on Rt. 50 in the early 90's and provided close to 400 jobs. Today they are down to 80 people working there and they are selling and moving their inventory and office materials before everything goes to Auction.

They did make offers to almost all of their employees to take positions in California and China but it's such a shame to see this company go. Many employees did in fact sign contracts for four years with the parent company to move elsewhere. Welcome to the new American Economy.

It is not a secret that in today's world we must all do what we can to stretch our dollars and your discussions have helped my family save, even if it is a nickel at a time, over the past few months. Since I have grown to use your Blog as a barometer on the market place I have saved money on gas, found comfort in my choice of Veterinarian, and gotten a better price on the oil required to heat my home. I have also been made aware of functions in the area that I would have otherwise missed out on. Again THANK YOU for that. I have made a point to tell these business owners where I heard of them when I call. I simply tell them that "Joe sent me". In an effort to give back I want to point out an experience I have recently had which could benefit your readers. While doing everything I can to make ends meet I was recently convinced to shop my insurance. I have been with the same agent for over 20 years and believed I was getting the best deal out there because of my long standing, claimless, relationship with this company. Was I ever rudely awakened!! I won't list the agency because I have also learned it is not the individual agent who controls the pricing so there is no need for me to cast a dark shadow over this easily identifiable person. After calling nearly every company in the phone book and offering all my vehicle, home, and boat information to all that would take it, I found one company that was confidently happy to quote me on my insurance. This company was Celtic Insurance, who writes for a few different companies, and they gave me a quote that was so much less expensive that I wouldn't trust an "over the phone" quote and went to see them at their office in the back of that small center wedged between Break Time and Burger King South, so I could see it on paper and compare the policy with the one I had. I was greeted by two of the nicest young men (young to me that is), Brian and Gavin McGinty, and they were more than happy to show me the differences in the policies. I found that not only was I going to save nearly $1200 yearly but that I would have much better coverage with Erie than I had with my old company. There were no gimmick deductibles in the new policy, the standard coverage was already greater than the "premium" coverage I had been paying to have for years!! I told these young men that I would send them as much business as I could and they were very humble when telling me they would appreciate it and that would be all they would hope to get from all their customers. Again I have to tell the whole story! I have sent numerous people into their office and not all of them qualified for the "Best" rate out there due to accidents or other claims. The majority of my "OLD FOLKS" club has saved much by doing so.
What you do with this is obviously up to you Joe. I appreciate all the information you share with your readers and wanted to share an experience of mine with them as well. Question of the Day, Wed 9/17

Today is Constitution Day. Do you remember learning this in your civics class? Do you think our President Bush knows the meaning? Do you think our presidential canidates can pick through this and define the preamble to the Constitution?

Let's refresh our memory.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

We the People of the United States:
The Framers were an elite group - among the best and brightest America had to offer at the time. But they knew that they were trying to forge a nation made up not of an elite, but of the common man. Without the approval of the common man, they feared revolution. This first part of the Preamble speaks to the common man. It puts into writing, as clear as day, the notion that the people were creating this Constitution. It was not handed down by a god or by a king - it was created by the people.

in Order to form a more perfect Union:
The Framers were dissatisfied with the United States under the Articles of Confederation, but they felt that what they had was the best they could have, up to now. They were striving for something better. The Articles of Confederation had been a grand experiment that had worked well up to a point, but now, less than ten years into that experiment, cracks were showing. The new United States, under this new Constitution, would be more perfect. Not perfect, but more perfect.

establish Justice:
Injustice, unfairness of laws and in trade, was of great concern to the people of 1787. People looked forward to a nation with a level playing field, where courts were established with uniformity and where trade within and outside the borders of the country would be fair and unmolested. Today, we enjoy a system of justice that is one of the fairest in the world. It has not always been so - only through great struggle can we now say that every citizen has the opportunity for a fair trial and for equal treatment, and even today there still exists discrimination. But we still strive for the justice that the Framers wrote about.

One of the events that caused the Convention to be held was the revolt of Massachusetts farmers knows as Shays' Rebellion. The taking up of arms by war veterans revolting against the state government was a shock to the system. The keeping of the peace was on everyone's mind, and the maintenance of tranquility at home was a prime concern. The framers hoped that the new powers given the federal government would prevent any such rebellions in the future.

provide for the common defence:
The new nation was fearful of attack from all sides - and no one state was really capable of fending off an attack from land or sea by itself. With a wary eye on Britain and Spain, and ever-watchful for Indian attack, no one of the United States could go it alone. They needed each other to survive in the harsh world of international politics of the 18th century.


promote the general Welfare:
This, and the next part of the Preamble, are the culmination of everything that came before it - the whole point of having tranquility, justice, and defense was to promote the general welfare - to allow every state and every citizen of those states to benefit from what the government could provide. The framers looked forward to the expansion of land holdings, industry, and investment, and they knew that a strong national government would be the beginning of that.

and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity:
Hand in hand with the general welfare, the framers looked forward to the blessings of liberty - something they had all fought hard for just a decade before. They were very concerned that they were creating a nation that would resemble something of a paradise for liberty, as opposed to the tyranny of a monarchy, where citizens could look forward to being free as opposed to looking out for the interests of a king. And more than for themselves, they wanted to be sure that the future generations of Americans would enjoy the same.


do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America:
The final clause of the Preamble is almost anti-climatic, but it is important for a few reasons - it finishes the "We, the people" thought, saying what we the people are actually doing; it gives us a name for this document, and it restates the name of the nation adopting the Constitution. That the Constitution is "ordained" reminds us of the higher power involved here - not just of a single person or of a king, but of the people themselves. That is it "established" reminds us that it replaces that which came before - the United States under the Articles (a point lost on us today, but quite relevant at the time).

A Letter To The Editor

"Dear Joe,

I read the article about Burger King North and felt i should share my own story
about wendy's north. A couple weeks ago a friend and I at about 11 p.m. decided
to go to Wendy's to get something to eat. We placed our order, which they got
wrong so there was a little misunderstanding. As we drove up to the window to
pay and get our food i said, someones probably going to spit in our food. When
we got the window i said to the lady, "sorry about that," and she replied,"
Ohhhh, thats alrightttt." So long story short we get back to my friends house i
open my first burger and rummage through which appears to be perfectly fine, so
i ate it. As i got to my second jr bacon cheeseburger i checked through that one
also. When i lifted up the bun there was a pubic hair neatly placed on top of
the cheese. After eating the one burger my stomach went into a fury. Needless to
say we went back up to wendy's and pulled up to the window and told the lady
what had happened in which she replied, "Sorry about that, would you like us to
make you something else??" I couldn't believe my ears. God only knows what they
would have done to my next burger. We asked to speak to the manager and to be
reimbursed for our food. As the manager walks up the cashier tells her our story
and we see them both start laughing behind the window and 15 minutes later we
received our money and a smirk from the cashier. Obviously I haven't eaten there
since nor can i go to any fast food restaurant (except Chik-fil-A) without
looking through my food before i eat it. I find it disgusting that someone could
do that and a manager would find a situation like that humurous. Just wanted to
inform anyone so if you want to Wendy's, don't go north!!

On September 11, 2008 at approximately 3:10 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police Department were on routine patrol in the area of Smith St. and Maryland Avenue, when they observed the below listed suspect acting in a suspicious manner. As the officers attempted contact, the suspect fled from the area on foot. The officers were able to locate and apprehend the suspect. During the foot chase, the suspect attempted to discard three (3) small baggies, which were collected, and found to contain a quantity of suspected crack/cocaine.

On September 12, 2008 at approximately 4:20 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police Department arrested the below listed suspect for a burglary that occurred at Lombardi’s restaurant earlier this month. Detectives from the Salisbury Police have identified the suspect as responsible for the theft of a vehicle, then using that vehicle to respond to Lombardi’s for the purpose of the burglary. The stolen property was not recovered.

On September 12, 2008 at approximately 10:38 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police Department were on routine patrol in the area of Waverly Drive and South Boulevard and observed a vehicle being operated by the below listed suspect commit a traffic offense. The vehicle was stopped, and officers observed a quantity of suspected marijuana inside of the vehicle in plain view. A further check of the suspect revealed a quantity of suspected ecstasy on his person.

On September 14, 2008 at approximately 5:30 am, Officers of the Salisbury Police Department received a call to respond to a residence on Jenkins Lane for the report of a trespasser. Upon arrival, the officers met with the victim who advised that the below listed suspect refused to leave her property. When advised that he had to leave the suspect became loud and refused to comply with the officer’s requests.
