A Humane Society Comment Worthy Of A Post

"Last October my house sitter accidently left the front door unlocked and my dog got loose. We drove 4 hours back home to look for him. Several unanswered calls to the HS and I went there. I could here him barking as I entered the building. I showed a very good picture of him and they told me he wasn't there and would not let me look. As I exited the building I distinctly heard his bark. I went back in and he was there. I put him on his leash and walked out.

  1. If they don't let you go look to see if it is your dog after you give them a picture (I could see it if you hadn't described the dog or anything as you could just walk in and take someone else'), then something is DEFINITELY WRONG with that place!

  2. Riverat,

That was your punishment for being an irresponsible dog owner. It is the discretion of the Humane Society what type of punishment you get and if you can even get your dog back. If you don't like the way the Humane Society runs things in Socialist State of Wicomico - move on! Right?

Wrong! There is nothing to indicate that you are anything but a responsible pet owner. Things happen. The Humane Society doesn't have the authority to "punish" anyone. They don't have the authority to refuse to give a pet back to the owner with the exception of dogs that have been deemed dangerous or deadly. BUT they do these things routinely and use the excuse that they have the "discretion". The real issue is the lack of accountability at the Humane Society. This is the way I see it.

The Humane Society in Wicomico County play a dual role. First, they are an animal shelter which is designed to take in strays, find homes for homeless animals, and show up on the news in the morning to display an animal for adoption. Second, they are contracted by the County to enforce the county code as it relates to animals.

One has nothing to do with the other. Finding new homes for stray/abandoned animals is NOT a function of the county govt.

Wicomico County currently pays more than $300,000.00 annually to enforce the county code. Therefore there should be a mechanism in place to hold those charged with the enforcement of the code accountable for working within the parameters of the law. There MUST BE a link between any private organization and the Govt. if that private organization has the responsibilities of enforcing law. If not, there is no system of checks and balances in place by which the organization answers to the people via their elected representatives.

I just spoke with Ed Baker and I will see the County Exec. in about an hour. I would like to see exactly what they have in mind that will address this problem. It will only get worse.

  4. I wonder if these people have some sort of scam going on there?

Why wouldn't they give this person their dog back?

Would it be plausible that the staff has figured out a way to exploit these animals to their personal enrichment...such as stud service or selling pure bred females?

Something is fishy here and it has been reeking a long long time!

Definitely you have a career in fiction writing. Stud service and selling purebred females? Why not invent that they're renting the dogs to Hollywood directors and making huge movie fees? When scenarios are total figments of your imagination, how do you know when to stop?

  6. I just can't believe that these people who run this place are doing so just to be ugly to people. There has got to be some motivation in there.
I always look to see what motivation there is for someone to behave a certain way and I just can't figure these broads out.

At least I didn't say they were selling their bodies to pharmaceutical companies, or making blood sacrifices to satan!
