Facial Coverings Now Required On OC’s Boardwalk But Council Says No To Making Municipal Infraction; Tensions Run High As Officials Debate Enforcement

OCEAN CITY — After a two hour-plus, often-tense debate, a divided Ocean City Council on Friday morning basically took no action on a proposed emergency ordinance requiring the wearing of masks on the Boardwalk and essentially deferred to Governor Larry Hogan’s amended mandate announced earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Hogan implemented an amended executive order mandating the wearing of masks in all outdoor public spaces where it is not possible to achieve social distancing. A violation of the directive will be handled as a misdemeanor with the appropriate fines and penalties.

Locally, the most obvious place affected by the change is the Boardwalk, where most have been wearing masks inside stores and amusements, for example, but the majority are not wearing masks while walking outdoors along the famed promenade. Hogan’s amended executive order on the surface appears to include the Boardwalk because social distancing is not often possible in the height of the summer season.

On Friday, the Mayor and Council held an emergency session to consider two separate, but distinctive, issues related to Hogan’s latest executive order. Mayor Rick Meehan, as he is authorized to do and as he has done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, issued an emergency declaration requiring the wearing of masks at all times on the Boardwalk and at other outdoor special events

  1. There is only 30 days at most left in the season so why not chase the last hope for survival away - for nothing but BS!

    Makes sense to meeeeee.....

  2. My family and I have solved that problem. DON'T GO TO OC.

  3. We need to go back to 'segregation'. Masks and non-smokers on one side, and
no-mask and smokers on the other.

  4. It’s important to note, all were in agreement violations of the mask requirements should be handled by the Ocean City Police Department with education and outreach before stronger enforcement measures for non-compliance.

I'm against forcing someone to wear a mask but come on, how long has this been going on? We've been required to wear masks for months and now they think we should still be educating the public first? Typical dumbass Democrats.

    2. Masks do no more than underwear and long pants do to contain a fart. Can anyone prove this statement to be wrong? Come on hogan, give us some facts how the masks will prevent this flu-like disease. There is no criteria or standards explaining what is an acceptable mask and what isn't. So to all you mask wearers out there, are you wearing a legal mask or is it just for show?

  5. Speaking of councils. The Wicomico Council needs to appoint a new County Executive after Culver's death; meanwhile they are looking to have on the next ballot the vote for the removal of the Office of County Executive altogether. The council wants all the power, so who the heck do you think they will appoint to County Exec? They will appoint a weak lackey, like that moron Carl Anderton, who can't read a spread sheet and has not graduated HS or ever ran anything. Chris Adams is also putting his hat in the ring along with Anderton. We all know the slumlord John Cannon will be looking for a County Executive Puppet. Keep an eye out people!!!

    1. We are screwed. Bob Culver did a good job to keep us from these puppets. I am very afraid of what is to come. And by the looks at who voted last election, we are in some major trouble. Open your wallets my friends. They will be coming for more money in the way of increased taxes. Thank you Bob Culver for all you did to protect the county from these crazy people. Whenever a council looks to get rid of checks and balances be very afraid.

  6. This is actually good, Joe. If they agreed to a civil infraction then it’d be hard to fight in court. But now the police have no actual “code”’to place on a ticket because there is no law broken. Legislators make law, not tyrant Governors. Any ticket written will be easily fought in court.

  7. Chris Adams more fitting than these other POS.

  8. Hogan, aka Hitler, will not force his General Meehan to enforce his mandate and Hitler will not send in his BROWN SHIRTS until after the money season.

Blatant anti concern for the Publics health but only money.

Hogan in his last term has initiated the Democrat socialist communist rule in Maryland.

Hogan has ruined MD politics like Obama did National politics. Both POS.

  9. When you put money ahead of public safety you loose business. OC will find this out throughout 2020 and in 2021!

  10. Too bad for OC. They used to be one of the best employers for seasonal workers. Those potential workers though no longer see the Town as an employer and must look elsewhere. It's beginning that hospitality workers demand higher compensation than Bus Drivers in OC. Not many choices for retirees here.

Fk Carl Anderton. Isn't he the Goober that endorsed Jake Day? If he was smart he would keep his job as a Delegate because he got lucky when he won that and he may never get elected again.

Carl Anderton tells his Crisfield buddies that he graduated from Parkside High School and he then tells his Salisbury buddies that he graduated from Crisfield. He doesn't think anyone will bother to look into it. I already have. He hasn't graduated from Wicomico County Schools so who is going to look into Somerset County Schools?

I don't think Carl Anderton even has a GED.
