Lyrics For The Black National Anthem

Lift Every Voice and Sing
James Weldon Johnson, J. Rosamond Johnson

Lift ev'ry voice and sing
'Til earth and heaven ring
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list'ning skies
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on 'til victory is won
Stony the road we trod
Bitter the chastening rod
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died
Yet with a steady beat
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered
Out from the gloomy past
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast
God of our weary years
God of our silent tears
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light
Keep us forever in the path, we pray
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee
Shadowed beneath Thy hand
May we forever stand
True to our God
True to our native land

  1. NFL has been banned in my house for 10 years. I also do not have any interest in any discussion about MLB,NBA. NASCAR has been added as well. Definitely don't support merchandise sales.

  3. Very nicely written and it should serve a purpose somewhere but not replacing this country's National Anthem it is our history and represents all our people and most importantly what OUR COUNTRY HAS STOOD FOR ALL. I hope the other is never forgotten and finds its own way into history but not replacing our anthem.

Complete version of "The Star-Spangled Banner"
from Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

    G-D BLESS AMERICA

  16. Abraham Lincoln said:As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless.

  25. Thank God the commenters on this story are dying breed.. This blog should provide any nonwhite person with a heavy dose of Republican reality. Republicans are racist and bigoted as they have been since they labeled themselves ‘conservatives’. They only like blacks when they ‘stay in their place’ or make them comfortable in their racism. One has only to read the stories that always paint black people as ignorant, criminals or weak. Joe never posts stories about blacks who have been victims of racism or corrupt Republicans. The comments are always extremely racists. Vote blue as fast as you can.

  27. What a gloomy song.

Keep feeling sorry for yourself. Tell each other (and everyone else) how bad you have it. Maybe not even how bad YOU have it, but how bad your great, great, great, great , great father had it. And, have the nerve to talk about "white people separated our families". YOU separate your own families with multiple ABSENT fathers of multiple children all the time.

Tell people, over and over, that you will NEVER be anything, have anything, accomplish anything, or rise above even the smallest of challenges, unless white people GIVE YOU MORE FREE STUFF. Save us, white people, save us!!
You are helpless because your skin is black?? The black middle class is bigger than it has ever been and black people in America have it better than any group of black people in ANY NATION ON EARTH.

Keep believing that and you know what?? You'll NEVER BE ANYTHING but another stereotypical loser, crying and whining like a child who won't be given any more candy. Your fat ace has had enough candy. Now, it's time for the chores.

  29. 10:43am - Could you tell me what hole you climbed out of?? Did you fall asleep in History Class??? Democrats play the black card because their polices are neither compelling or logical. What's left but emotional propaganda. The Democrats were the leaders of KKK and white supremecy. My god even the KKK leader was in government and Hillary Clinton bragged he was her mentor. Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves was a Republican. GET REAL!!
The black community leadership has built their entire careers and fortunes on race baiting.
The leftists racial policies have kept the black population down and dependent on the government for everything.
Keep them angry at the boogey man (Republicans).
    Give them free stuff.
Keep them voting for free stuff so they stay poor and helpless.
Control them and do what you want.
    Modern day Democrat slavery.
Racism has been a powerful tool for the left and for opportunists like Al Sharpton.

  30. Wow...
Racism of any type is non-productive and just ugly in general. I believe we all have ideas on how to fix it, by far, those ideas have all failed. In short, all the issues that we talk about is water under the bridge. We cannot go back and change anything that has happened. But, we can learn from it.
All we can control is today, and going forward. And those changes are made one person at a time. I totally agree with some of the statements above reference us all being Americans, period end of story.
There’s no doubt that there’s been slaves of all skin colors and slave owners of all skin colors. Again that’s water under the bridge let’s go forward. If an individual has racial feelings, they need to deal with them on an individual basis.
This United States of America is absolutely a melting pot, and that’s a brag not a problem. As a result of being a melting pot, all Americans could put another word in front of American, but all that does is create division, which is what we’re All trying to get away from, hopefully.
Personally, I find peace in knowing that God should be our focus, not our individual wants and wishes.
If every American, was to be honest about fixing their individual issues, and not trying to tell everybody else what there issues are we would all be better off.
In short, I’m all for totally absolutely erasing racism/division. Let’s stand united not divided!
