US Air Force bombers fly over South China Sea in latest show of strength

The U.S. military continued its week-long show of force in the South China Sea with a sortie over the contested waters on Thursday by two Air Force bombers.

The B-1B Lancers from the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., flew a 32-hour round trip to conduct operations over the sea as part of a joint bomber task force by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. Strategic Command, the Air Force said in news release Thursday.

The mission further demonstrated the service’s new “dynamic force employment model,” which is intended to make its global bomber presence less predictable, the Air Force said.

China has claimed sovereignty over much of the South China Sea, an assertion disputed by other nations with competing claims, such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.

During the past week, Navy warships operated near the Spratly and Paracel islands, two of the archipelagos China has claimed most vehemently.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill sailed near the Spratlys on Wednesday as part of its so-called freedom-of-navigation operations. They are intended to challenge assertions by China and other claimant nations that military passing near the islands must first receive authorization.

  1. The guys (and gals) that fly those things have the best jobs in the world. And the fighter jet pilots? They would PAY the government to let them fly those incredible war machines. It is an experience like no other.

  2. The open ocean is just that, open. Territorial claims end at the 12 nautical mile mark.
Territorial sea, as defined by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from the baseline (usually the mean low-water mark) of a coastal state.

Of course, if Chinese or Russian warships had seagoing battle exercises 13 miles off the coast of San Francisco, Seattle or NYC, somebody here would be having a cow.

China wants to expand its influence on the rest of the world by whatever means it can, no holds barred. When the referees in the game are looking the other way, or have been bought off, we and the rest of the non-communist world are in trouble.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

  8. 1027 China is doing exactly what we should be doing; let our dollars do the talking. While we continue to use our rhetoric to charge into every incident around the globe, send troops and bombs as a readily available first option, and get bogged down into decades of rebuilding the same infrastructure we spent money to destroy, the Chinese are showing up at doorsteps simply saying "whats for sale?". This is how thier influemce has grown

  9. We need to stand up to China. But like one commenter in this blog stated - who is China paying off for the authorities to look the other way - Pelosi Obama Clinton's?

  10. On current Shark Tank shows the sharks are no longer encouraging entrepreneurs to switch to Chinese manufacturing to save money.Instead of doing the right thing & announce that they were ceasing that practice they just stopped doing it.They should have made it formal.
