A Viewer Writes.............Name That Tune

Yo, Joe!

A friend of my friend's son, down in Temperanceville, is having an electronic hearing device implanted next month. I was there when he was discussing music his kid would hear for the first time, and lamented what was on the radio, and asked what we would suggest for a "mix tape" for his 10 year old. He recognized the greats, as he was wearing a Rush T shirt in the unusually warm weather, coincidentally the same concert I got my T-shirt from in Baltimore almost 10 years ago. He is looking for more obscure works. I suggested "I'm Shipping up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys and Harry Nilsson's, " Jump into the Fire."

I would like to suggest more obscure rock music that really would blow the uninitiated mind. He will surely hear Led Zepp., Elvis, Metallica, and the Beatles, but we are looking for different mind exploding sounds. My first suggestion had bag pipes in a rap rock piece. My second is just a personal favorite, that I used to almost be able to run a mile to. I am looking for other inspired, lost rock pieces that he would not likely hear on today's repeat Taylor Swift or Pink stations, immediately channel flipping, garbage. Trying to stay away from the often played greats. That will come to him "naturally", despite him now being a cyborg! 🙂

  1. Moody Blues or Santana. Carlos Santana believes that all his songs are given to him from our Divine Creator.

  2. The group Yes and song roundabout should rock his range followed with Chicago and 25or6 to 4 with a incredable sound explosion.

  3. I could be wrong about this, but worth checking into:

My understanding is when these hearing devices are "turned on" it takes some amount of time before the person's brain can start interpreting the signals smoothly.

In other words, at first what the person hears is very scratchy and abrasive. I would suggest finding out from their doctor how long they may need to wait before trying to let the young man appreciate some great music.

    1. His brain is supposed to adapt to the feedback or humming noise has virtually overnight. But yes, you are correct.

  5. Geez, you guys are trying to blow his eardrums out! Just start him off with something easy like classical or light jazz....THEN incorporate hard rock.

    1. His eardrums don't work. That is why he is deaf. To hell with jazz!

  7. Had an implant in September, I thought at first that it was a waste of money because it does take a while to teach your brain to understand what you are hearing. The good news is now its been four months and for me its like a miracle and it gets better and better. Mine was done at John Hopkins.

  13. Agree - go easy. Don't want the first words he hears to be "rock crazy". How about voices of family, friends, dogs, cars, airplanes, trains - sounds we take for granted. 🤔

    1. 8:24- Stop. Just stop. He's not going to be locked in his bedroom listening to the radio. He will always be surrounded by family and friend's to listen and talk to. You obviously missed the point entirely! The kid wants to rock out! Stop turning this into something else. If you don't want to "play", take your ball and go home.

  18. Anything by "Here Come The Mummies". Their Funk and Rock sound is so full and they are perfectionist when it comes to their music.

    1. 8:16- Springsteen can suck it. Hasn't had a good song in almost 40 years and just sings about how America sucks. Cheats on his wife, and complains when Trump is fixing all the things he complains about in his music. No thank you.

  21. To those interested, I saw the dad yesterday. I had made a quick mix CD based on the suggestions here. Here is what I recorded. Jethro Tull's Skating away. Jethro Tull was my first concert I went to. Ian Anderson's daughter is married to the lead actor from the walking dead, Andrew Lincoln. Just a little trivia. Next was most of Sgt. Peppers, followed by Rush's Spirit of Radio. AC/DC's Shoot to thrill. The Hiam's the Wire, for a little girl power, not to neglect Heart, which will be on my second album for little Denny. Box of rain, Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's band, and Touch of Grey. I even threw in Paco Bell for the Classical suggestion. Thanks for the suggestions. Please don't be offended if your suggestion didn't make the first cut. This is just disc 1.

  22. Earschplittenloudenboomer completely sucks! Likely why I never heard of it. I forgot to mention the few tunes from the Moody Blues and a few songs off of No Jacket Required made it on the CD. Mad respect to Phil Collins, an Englishman historian of the Alamo. No reason a rocker can't respect a solid top 40 singer and drummer.

  23. I was their that day too, small world. I drove my friends uncles second cousin. Ironically we were headed to a Disney World. You probably noticed our Disney shirts, hard to miss because their was 15 of us. Best music I ever heard playing in a doctor’s office. Hope your sons friend of a friend makes out ok and likes his tape.
