Three Potential New Bay Bridge Corridors Identified; Public Hearings Scheduled

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Maryland Transportation Authority Tuesday released a list of three potential corridors in which a Chesapeake Bay crossing could be built in an effort to reduce traffic stress on the existing U.S. Highway 50 Bay Bridge.

The three preliminary corridor alternatives include:

  • Corridor 6: MD 100 to US 301 between Pasadena (Anne Arundel County), Rock Hall (Kent County) and Centreville (Queen Anne’s County)
  • Corridor 7: existing Bay Bridge corridor, US 50/301 to US 50 between Crofton (Anne Arundel County) and Queenstown (Queen Anne’s County)
  • Corridor 8: US 50/301 between Crofton (Anne Arundel County) and Easton (Talbot County).
MDTA is also considering a no-build alternative.

The department said the three corridor alternatives were the only options that meet traffic needs and comply with the National Environmental Policy Act.

  1. Make the pipe bigger so you can get crap down it faster. They're still going to sit in wall to wall traffic once they get over the Chesapeake. Geez...

    1. Stop these temporary fixes. Build an underground high speed (30 minute) passenger train from Glen Burnie to West Ocean City. Buses in OC go anywhere anybody needs to go and are very inexpensive. Vehicle traffic is the problem, not the number of people. And look at the number of high paying jobs this would create. Other countries build these next to impossible projects for their citizen's convenience and we should too, instead of trying these nickle and dime short term fixes.

  3. They need to put a bridge at the end in Cambridge that gets us over to Charles county and southern Maryland.... Would easy traffic all over even the current bay bridge and we also wouldn't need to drive 3 to 4 hours to get to southern Maryland...

  4. I used to live on MD100. It's a 2 lane road with a middle reversible traffic signal. It can't be widened because of the overbuilding along that road. In short, a disaster.

  5. The bridge isn't the backup, traffic volume is. Adding a span at the bridge won't do anything.

Personally, I think the span should be from Southern MD to Crisfield, then it could tie into 113. This would present an entirely new route to OC versus everything being dependent on Rt. 50. Plus bring commerce to the poorest county in MD (Somerset), and present a way for eastern shore people to get better jobs on the other side.

  6. My prediction. Million$ of dollars will have been spent and the No-Build alternative will be selected. Just wait and see.

  7. What about one in lower Delmarva? There was talk about either Dorchester County or Crisfield.

I know from Taylors Island you can see Calvert cliffs.

Even by air, we are only less than fifty miles from Saint Mary's county.
The Eastern Shore is already a S**T hole so what difference does it make where the new bridge is built?

It's no longer the land of pleasant living. The crap from the western shore has already ruined this place. It could at least help economically depressed Somerset County Or Dorchester. I don't think the rich snots in Talbot would go for this!

  8. Hold those meetings, but do you really think that the folks on the eastern shore have a say? The western shore gets whatever they want, they don't see this area as anything more than a pass-through to the beach.

  9. This corridors only meet traffic needs and comply with the National Environmental Act as for as the Western Shore is concerned. What about the compliance with the National Environmental Act on the Eastern Shore? Where is this extra traffic going? It will do nothing but create traffic jams from Easton to Ocean City. Totally ridiculous. Need to restrict the numbers of vehicles allowed on the Eastern Shore of people who does not live here year round. Quit attempting to make my life miserable and increasing the extra pollution from the extra traffic.

  11. NO MORE BRIDGES! Develop a decent transit system like they have in other states. Help is needed for this. I do not understand why other countries have great transit systems and the United States is the worst yet. Either put trains back in service. They go now from Washington, Baltimore to Wilmington. They are fairly high speed. I also know they go as far as Harrington. Take it on to Rehoboth and get the traffic off the highways. OR another option would be high speed ferry like they have in England and France. I just don't get it. NO MORE BRIDGES~ Infrastructure help from the federal government is needed~

    1. You're very close 11:04, but a high speed passenger train tunnel is the answer

  12. I think one in Southern Md to Crisfield would be the best. It would help Somerset County and also take some of the traffic off of Route 50. This one makes the most sense, however if it would benefit this part of the Eastern Shore Hogan would probably go against it. He has done NOTHING for this part of the shore other than to show up to have his picture taken.

  13. Somerset County is dying, the Easton solution makes the most sense as well as building an expressway from Chesapeake to Shore.

  14. They need to put in a pair of overpasses first...

    213 x 50

    then 404 x 50.

Then close the 18 x 50 turn lanes at the outlet malls - bad accident area!

  15. They need to establish the locations early so WaWa and Royal Farms have time to procure the necessary farmland.

Why so they can take over 2 hours to get across the bay instead of an hour plus have the pleasure of paying extra money.

  21. time to ban the tourists! better yet, make them pay as they pass through each town! a surcharge to get to the beach! oc makes out while the rest of us suffer with their mess!

    ReplyDelete
  22. How do you make tourists pay for going through a town ... talk about back-ups.
And the back-ups would include the locals too, not just tourists. Smart, real smart

  23. nope....no new bridge.....just change the speed limit to 100mph and remove all the lights from the bridge to west O....the, charge each vehicle $500.00 each. After that build multiple bleachers and allow shore folk to watch the chaos for free! hahaha!

  24. It is still 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC NO MATTER HOW MANY BRIDGES YOU BUILD.

We will look like New York soon

Hogan only cares about his rich people who want to get to Ocean city

      we are doomed

  25. Joe - you are doing a great service by providing an avenue for public comments on this extremely important long range planning project. Excellent comments!

I love 10:03's comment and encourage everyone to read it again.

The comment from 12:41 is hilarious and refers to the ability of corporate interests to always be one step ahead of public interest on any governmental project. Face it, we live in a commercialize society so where to place the next gas station is of extreme importance for those who are invested in the venture.

I like the mass transit ideas posted on the thread because that just makes good sense. Unfortunately in the US we still love the idea of making the trip to the beach in our own vehicle loaded up with our own stuff. That's just how we Americans think.

A ferry could be a profitable enterprise and should in fact, be a private venture in my opinion. One simply needs to gain control of landing sights on each side of the Bay. Or several sights in the case of "entertainment ferry rides" - which I love to consider. Imagine a large ferry (or several like we find at Cape May) fitted for a band, restaurant, bar, and relaxing deck side sitting. People pay a fee, drive onboard and park, get out and mingle or sit quietly on a comfortable chair next to the deck of the boat. I like it.

    Thank you
