Ocean City Special Event Zone Wednesday, September 25 – Sunday, September 29

OCEAN CITY, MD – (September 19, 2019): With thousands of car enthusiasts expected in Ocean City next week, Coastal Highway and Philadelphia Avenue (MD-528) will be designated a Special Event Zone beginning Wednesday, September 25 through Sunday, September 29, during the unsanctioned motor vehicle event. The Special Event Zone reduces established speed limits in the zone and increases fines for violations.

Along with reduced speed limits, citizens should expect to see a large police presence as officers from multiple allied agencies will be assisting the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD). Officers from the Ocean City Police Department, Maryland State Police, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland Transportation Authority and Maryland Natural Resources Police will be strictly enforcing all traffic laws.

Spectators are urged to keep the sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic and should not incite the spinning of wheels or “burn-outs” by motorist. Officers will enforce all laws for spectators who incite drivers, as well as cite drivers for these violations. Further, with high pedestrian traffic expected, pedestrians are urged to Walk Smart! and always use crosswalks when crossing roadways. Wait for the signal to change and be sure that drivers see you while crossing.

  1. Good - this particular group (unsanctioned H2Oi/stanced/modified cars) does nothing but see how far they can taunt and push police and in general make a mess and cause problems (as evidenced by the videos they post online)

  2. Isn’t “inciting a burnout” protected first amendment speech?

  3. How can you designate a social event zone when you don't even have an event scheduled. It is a unsanctioned event. Which means it should not even be going on. Just Ocean City's way of more money grabbing on unsuspecting tourist and locals.

    1. Unsanctioned doesn’t mean illegal. People have a constitutional right of assembly.

  4. What? A special event zone can override the constitutional right to free speech? I don't think so. When they arrest and fine someone for yelling "git it on", there is going to be a court case that goes far beyond the district court in OC. Why in the world does anyone want to visit OC? There is nothing attractive about the place anymore. Just drop all your money in a bucket by the bridge, and turn around and go back home. Your money is ALL they want in that town. If they can't get it by draining your wallet at the hotels, motels and eateries, they will take it in parking fees and fines. OC is not happy if you leave with any money in your pocket. I quit going over there many years ago, after being a frequent, almost daily visitor during the summer, in my younger days. Its just an overcrowded rat hole now.
