Finding out what killed Ocean City whale could take ‘weeks or months’

It could be “weeks or months” before the National Aquarium in Baltimore is able to complete its necropsy on the young sperm whale that died after being stranded on an Ocean City beach, a spokesperson says.

“[The Maryland Department of Natural Resources] has led a team in partnership with the National Aquarium to complete a full necropsy, an animal autopsy,” the spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. “We are working hard to understand what made this whale sick, if it’s a risk to other animals or people, and what, if anything, can be done to protect other animals.”

“Unfortunately, in situations like this it is often very difficult to determine cause of death and results may be inconclusive.”

  2. Whales, just like humans, do not live forever. It was obviously not suicide nor homicide so it probably died of natural causes.

  3. What a waste of time and our tax dollars. A whale died, just like all whales eventually do. They have disrupted nature by their intervention with the carcass that should be being consumed by all the other sea creatures. Now they won't let nature do its job, and the whale will go to waste. All for what? So they can play with it and come to the same conclusion they usually do....that they don't know why whales come to the beach to die. Its not about protecting "other animals or people," its about protecting their jobs.

  7. Sub sonar. In order to maintain military superiority subs cannot alter sonar frequency to whale compatibility. This is truly sad,but any attempt by investigators to reveal this issue will be thwarted. If the public knew the truth they would demand a change that would in turn put American security in jeopardy.

Whole lot of theory, and little to no facts in your comment.
