$100K Grant To Help Build Regional Airport’s Drone Center

SALISBURY – A $100,000 grant is expected to help develop a drone facility at the Salisbury Regional Airport.

Last week, Airport Manager Dawn Veatch came before the Wicomico County Council in a work session to request an amendment to the fiscal year 2019 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) in the amount of $100,000 to accept an Economic Development Assistance Fund Grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce.

The money will be used to construct a new Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Center for Innovation at the airport.

“In the CIP for FY 2019, we made the assumption that we had sufficient funding to finalize this project, but it was determined that we needed additional funding,” Veatch wrote in a memo. “The State awarded the County $100,000 in FY 2020 with no matching requirement. This amount should be sufficient to finish the UAS Center for Innovation in its entirety, with the previous funding already received.”

  1. Why is a Drone Facility needed? Drones can be managed from Fort Meade or the Andrews Air Force Base. Total waste of money.

    1. I guess the jobs it will bring to this area means nothing to you either. Go back to bed!

  2. Mission disparities and backup. And it means additional revenue (and jobs?) every year for Salisbury's struggling airport.

  3. Will the fare for a drone be cheaper?

  4. Why is it called the Salisbury Regional Airport? If they are going to do away with the Salisbury-Wicomico Airport then as a county taxpayer I prefer it to be called the Wicomico County Airport. WTF does Ghetto'Bury have to do with it? How much money does it provide to the County-owned airport? NONE!! Definitely not enough to dominate the name of the second biggest airport in Maryland! Way to go, Bob, another screw up on your watch!

  7. People don't realize that the military and other federal entities already use the airport and pay at least $1 million per year to do it. Without those $$, the airport would flounder.

  11. What people don’t know about this hangar is the actual bid of $1.6M came in much higher than the original estimate of $750,000. The airport manager grossly underestimated the cost of the hangar and had to get Wicomico County Council approval.
