VERIFY: The $1.9 billion that never was | Here's why the casino money Maryland schools expected never came through

When casinos were legalized in Maryland, voters were promised hundreds of millions of extra dollars for school funding. That didn't happen.
A viewer reached out to the Verify team to find out what happened to the big windfall schools were supposed to get from casinos. Did schools get a big boost from slots revenue?

Our Verify researchers followed the money.

In 2008, when casinos and slot machines were legalized, and again in 2012 with table games, tax money was supposed to be collected and go straight into the Education Trust Fund.

That fund was intended to help enhance school programming and facilities. However, that didn’t happen the way voters thought it would, because of the way the law was written.

  2. People are so naive, back when the casinos were first being discussed I said this would happen. I knew it would happen because this was the same argument for the lottery way back when and it is the same thing that happened then. The government doesn't care about education or children they only care about money and power.

They sold it to get more money for the crooked Politians to spend on their pet projects for the western shore. The Democrats lied as usual. Hogan has done nothing to correct this matter. Why does higher education get any of this? This money was sold to the Public by stating it was to go to Public Schools, so they would not have to rely totally on the Tax Payer. This money was also to be used to reduce the budget by assisting Public Schools and increasing the level of education out of Public Schools. Hogan this just shows how inept you are as a Republican and how true you are to the Democratic agenda. The same thing happen to the State Employee Retirement Fund, when the Politians stole / stealing money out of this fund without paying it back and not paying interest on this funds they stole / stealing. Hogan has done nothing on this matter neither.

  9. The ballot question was misleading on purpose. If they stated what percentage of the casino money would go to the schools people would know what is going on. We need transparency not lies and deception. This is OUR money !
