A City Employee/Volunteer Speaks Out About Salisbury Maryland Folk Festival

I was part of the "bucket brigade". In my 8 hour shift I collected $9.34, a bus token, and a tract from some religious organization. Some of my cohorts collected nothing, said the spectators advised they had already given. Wonder who will pick up the tab? By the way I am a city employee not a civil servant and was strongly advised to volunteer or suffer the circumstances. In the three days I worked 21 hours at the festival, had to buy my own food and not even supplied with water. Go Jake!!!!!

  1. How much do you want to bet that the music festival will be touted by the media and the local government as a success, with the very low turnout called moderate and it being blamed completely on the weather?

  4. The weather is not a factor when it comes to a 3 day event. It's different when it's something like a 10-day state fair and people can hold off for better weather.
If people were interested they would have come regardless of the weather. The problem is Salisbury and the surrounding ares isn't enticing enough for people. Even people who love folk music aren't going to drive any distance, pay for a 2 night hotel stay just to stay at the festival the whole time. They want other options to visit otherwise they don't feel it is worthwhile to go.

  5. 10:58,

Good point. If there had been good weather then it would be irrefutable that this is a complete failure and waste of public funds. As it is, only a fool would conclude otherwise.

  6. I was there from about 1:30 to 3:30 yesterday. When I arrived there was plenty of parking in the parking lot near Rt 13. I have to say by the time I left it was full. I walked the grounds twice thinking I must have missed things. I hadn’t. The Marketplace was about 10 or 12 vendors selling overpriced junk. I really like quality crafts, but there were none there. The “talent” that I saw was terrible. The only thing I liked was the skipjack that was on the river. I estimate the “crowd” to be maybe 1000 at the time I was there. Almost all the tags on the cars in the parking lot were Md or De.

  8. Joe, on Saturday delmarvanow.com had an article called something like "how businesses made out on the festival's first day". The responses from business was very underwhelming. All said business was slow, actually slower than usual. I notice there is no article asking these businesses how they fared on Saturday, nor do I see the article about Friday up anymore. Interesting, don't you think?

As far as the event itself, very poor planning, very poor attendance. The news can talk it up all they want, but your pictures show the truth! I gave up on the news 2 years ago. They only tell you what they want and show you what they want instead of giving us the real news about the crime and tragedy happening in our little Salisbury!! Jake Day has to go!! 18. From a conversation I had with one of the beggars, since there were so few of them they were strategically moved to stages where the most people were. When we were at a blues show there were at least 8 of them prancing around doing nothing most of the show. Some looked very young (in their teens). At the end of the show someone came on and hammered at the audience telling them to give money. It was an embarrassment.

The whole thing was sad. The weather killed it. The set up was a struggle to navigate, there were no tents at most of the stages so you were standing in the rain.

When we went past the "family" area there was nothing going on at all. We could not find the vendors selling their wares and missed that. Most of the food trucks had no prices posted so we didn't buy anything.

We were relieved to finally find a band worth listening to a tent to hide under and a chair to sit on.

Having attended and volunteered at other music festival it is obvious that Jake has never attended anything other than a firefly. You need tents and chairs at every stage if you expect people to stay.

Our country is traditionally known for it's folk music such as "blowing in the wind " This land is your land " and many others , not the crap I heard with a bunch of gays dancing to the tune of BS. 44. I was listening to my fire department radio and I kept hearing Command or Operations on the radio.
    Command to Gator 1
    Command to Gator 2
    Command to Gator 3
    Command to Marine 16
    Command to Bike 1
    Command to Fire Marshal 1
    and
    Command to Fire Marshal 2.

Can you believe as bad as this weather was and the lack of people attending that they set up a "Command Post?" Not only that but they had response checks every hour? Can you believe they wasted that much taxpayer money paying fire department employees to be at the National Folk Festival from Friday, Saturday and Sunday? I finally heard the "Command Post" tell everyone they can "close up" at around 8 pm tonight, Sunday night.

The funny thing is they kept calling and looking for the people who were supposed to be staffing the PRMC First Aid Tent. It sounds like the volunteers' staffing the PRMC First Aid Tent just upped and walked away at around 3:30 pm today or earlier. The paid firemen were calling on the radio for Gator 1 to look for the medical supplies and the radio from the abandoned First Aid Tent. It is funny as Hell thinking about those volunteers saying "F Jake Day and his Folk Festival, I'm going home." I can say without a doubt I don't blame them.

Where the Hell did the city get 3 gators from? I hope they were donated but I doubt that. Why the Hell did the city continue to pay for employees to staff those Gators knowing there were no people attending the Folk Festival?

Who the Hell are the 2 fire marshals? Everyone knows they aren't real fire marshals. The only real fire marshals are at the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The two so-called fire marshals in the Salisbury Fire Department are in name only. They are not qualified to pour piss out of a boot. As a matter of fact the one "fire marshal" was a paramedic on the ambulance with no fire or fire marshal experience. The second "fire marshal" came from the now-defunct Salisbury Neighborhood Housing and Code Compliance. He has no fire training, no fire inspections or fire experience. His only experience was doing drive-by citations for having grass in the cracks of city sidewalks.

Now to the Marine 16 issue? Why the Hell did Jake Day and that doofus John Tull think that the Fire Boat needed to be staffed by paid fire department employees? Yes, they were paid firemen because there are NO volunteers in the city. If you want to claim that Cherry Cheeks Townsend and Corn Waller are volunteers that can be debated. They are about the only ones at Station 16 but they only show up when there is controversy. Was there a floating theater or something floating down Poo River? The answer is NO so why did they think they needed to staff a fire boat? Trying to impress the 100,000 visitors of the Folk Festival. WTH were they thinking?

  53. This is an absolute joke. The fact that all this taxpayer money was spent on ridiculous painting of the parking garage, rainbow crosswalks, metal signs spelling out amphitheater..just to name a few things. Anyone with a brain could have predicted that the attendance would be not even a tenth of 30,000. Anyone who votes for Jake Day again needs to have their head examined. Someone needs to step up and see if we can get out of the next 2 years of this festival. Salisbury has more pressing things we need to spend money on. Not this.

He ignored the state highway commission when they said no marathon on state roads. He ignores everything. What do you expect?
