Eastern Shore couple quits jobs, sells belongings to travel the world

CAPE CHARLES, Va. (WAVY) – All of the clothes and supplies that Peter and Rachel Sengenberger will use over the next year while traveling around the world fit into four bags.

The couple packed methodically for their “round-the-world reset” trip that will take them more than a dozen countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, Finland, Italy, Peru and Chile.

At 41 years old, the two will leave Washington, D.C. for California on Thursday before flying to their first international stop in Australia.

"We kind of had this money we saved up that would have been the equivalent of a down payment on a house,” said Peter.

"Both of us are more experience people,” said Rachel. “We get a lot more out of that than stuff."

The idea for the trip happened after a medical scare in 2016, when Peter lost vision in part of his right eye.

"After a whole lot of testing, they determined it was nothing serious but it was likely stress related,” he said.

That’s when the couple started thinking about their lives – how they wanted to spent their time and futures together. Last August, they committed to researching and planning the trip.

"We literally had a conversation and said if we are going to do this there's no backing out,” Peter said.

  3. I agree with above. Sounds nice but they aren't going far unless they have a few million banked.

  4. They are clueless. Their "daily budget of $100-$135" is unrealistic for Australia where the cost of living is double the US and the UK. A meal for 2 at an inexpensive restaurant can cost close to $100 in US dollars. When we were there 9 years ago, we went out to dinner and my husband had on a newer but still worn RL Polo shirt. The restaurant's owner came out when our bill was presented (around $100) and offered to trade the Polo shirt for the bill. Seems RL is popular there but too expensive for most to purchase.

  8. 9:44 FUNNY....NOT. I have cancer. I am wealthy but by the time I die I will be penniless due to the cancer drugs. If I knew then what I know now....I would have packed up and left years ago. I hope you have wonderful trips and don't worry about old age.......it is the poor that get everything for free.
