Maryland ObamaCare insurers ask for rate increases up to 91 percent

Maryland’s Obamacare insurers are asking for a 30 percent average rate increase for 2019, with some plans seeking hikes as high as 91 percent.

The proposals Monday come a few days after Virginia insurers also called for double-digit rate increases. Democrats have pounced on the rate hikes to say they are examples of how President Trump’s health policies are leading to high premiums.

Maryland Obamacare insurers CareFirst, BlueCross, and BlueShield plan to raise rates for an HMO plan on the law’s exchanges by 18 percent, and 91 percent for an extended network, or PPO, plan.

Kaiser Permanente, the state’s other Obamacare insurer, asked for a rate increase of 37 percent, according to a state filing.

The rates must be approved by the state and must be finalized before open enrollment starts Nov. 1.

The state’s insurance regulator said the rates don’t reflect legislation passed by the General Assembly to shore up the insurance exchange.

  2. It was so much cheaper before we ever heard of Obamacare and they passed it to find out what's in it.

Well, now you know, and nobody has the kahunas to abolish Obamacare and put health insurance back between the Patient and their Health Provider.

    Your move, America.

  3. Obamacare is like being in assigned risk auto insurance. It just means you aren't smart enough to have real health insurance.

  4. Careful for what you speak 626pm. Some states (via govt employment..and by gov't that includes police/fire/1st responders, educators, court systems, etc.etc.etc) only provide 1 or 2 options - so if you work for local/state/fed gov't in certain states - you get what you get. County gov'ts are very strict in some states, offering only 1 provider.

Nothing Obama did. The CONgress failure to compromise has allowed the insurance industry to prosper. Why can't we ALL prosper?

  7. 7:13 Where? I've lived in 3 states since obamacare was enacted. Never heard of anyone with a government job being in Obamacare. They are in group health plans. Individuals with no employer sponsored or group plans are the ones stuck with obamacare.

  8. 7:13, you just don't get it, do you? When Obamacare passed, it brought on tens of thousands of government administrators that were NEVER involved in the health insurance "industry" before. All those people get paychecks now from our premiums we pay.
And you can only see it from what's served to you on your plate?

    Pathetic.

  9. 7:13...for the same reason we all can't have 4 bedroom house and 2 cars in the driveway.
Prosperity is EARNED. Goals. Hard work. Sacrifice. Drive.

Some cats got it, some cats don't.

THAT is why we all don't prosper. I can see you don't think too deeply after someone hands you a slogan and a street sign.
I'm also thinking you have never really earned anything. Otherwise you SHOULD be able to understand why prosperity, despite the dreams of your father, CANNOT be handed out like candy to whomever thinks they deserve it.
Want a great example? Pick ANY ghetto housing project. They ALL went from sterling clean and modern units to broken window, trash everywhere, roach infested, violent centers of generational welfare. They were GIVEN prosperity.
    Lesson over.
    For you, PLEASE stop cheering.

  10. People around here need to make better choices. If that means moving to where the food is (location where there are jobs) so be it. If you can't stop bitchin about the choice you made and MAKE the best of it.

If bitchin is all you have, sorry for your choices in life. Maybe next time!

  12. We do have it better than most 835, but we choose not to cage the animals that bring us down. Not an observation, just a fact.

    Need another example - CHICAGO!
