The Nasty, Filthy, Disgusting Royal Farms Saga Continues

So I was just in the Royal Farms in Hebron and noticed all this grease, dirt , cobwebs, dust, and flies on all the overheads, even over food/drink areas.

I asked the girl in a different colored shirt from the others (red) if she was a manager. I told her I work in food safety and a microbiology lab and that this would be a major food safety violation. She said “ well the health department wants us to clean it, but we aren’t because I’m scared of heights” I said well someone needs to, this is serious and needs to be done before someone gets sick and you get shut down, her reply “ I don’t care and I ain’t doing it!!”

    4. First of all let’s be clear, out of all the Rofos in the area that one is the cleanest and makes the most money! The issues that everyone is concerned about have been taken to the manager as well as upper management!! They will not do anything! The deep cleaning that needs to be done can not be done by employees in the store for safety reasons they have to get someone professional to do it yet they have not and probably will not because of the money aspect of it all!!! So before you go blaming the employees and thinking they are nasty, lazy etc CHECK YOUR FACTS!!! If it really a bother to you contact corporate for us because like I previously stated we have emailed, called and talked to upper management in person about all the issues and once again nothing has been done!!! So before you attempt to bash a store make sure all your information is right!

  2. Typical of the mentality. She will care when she is out of a job. She will be the first to cry that it isn't fair.

    2. If they just fire her without prior disciplinary actions and warnings she will in all probability get her unemployment. If they tell her directly to clean it up or your fired and she refuses, she probably wont get benefits. You have to tell the employee, what is expected, and the consequences for failure to do what is expected are.

    1. That's right. Boycott that store until conditions improve and let the store owner know why. If the local owners gets enough complaints, including from the health department, he will have to take action or go out of business.

  4. They'll continue to be fined for not cleaning it then..

  7. I agree with her. It shouldn't be her job and it is ridiculous to think she should have to do this. They should contract with professional cleaners to come in a couple of times a year to take care of it.

So you want her to climb a ladder and sweep all that crap down on top of everything in the store including the food?

Chores like that are way above their pay scale and expertise and should be handled professionally.

  9. It's a job for a commercial cleaning service, not the store's staff. It's also one that requires that the store be closed for at least one night. Everything in the store has to be covered or removed before cleaning begins.

  16. If that store was privately owned I bet the Health Dept. would have shut down the food service area till it was fully cleaned. If Joe owned it it would have been condemned by the Health Dept.!

  17. As a manager it is her job to see to it it is cleaned either by the employees or by a professional crew. It just shows her mentality to her job - do as little as possible, git mes check, goes homes!

  18. 11:03, I understand what you are saying, if I owned it. However, I can proudly say that I owned a bar and restaurants, (public food service) in Anne Arundel County and was the first business in more then 10 years to get a 100% on my inspections year after year. Of course the nay sayers out there will say I'm lying but even the newspapers and media out there, (as well as Health Department records) boasted about how clean my businesses were.

As for my homes, anyone who knows us knows that they are always spotless. I published this information because it is disgusting and the Health Department should be all over this.

  21. The grease captures the dust and then more grease. The grease gets rancid. The grease is food for tiny critters. The tiny critters leave critter waste products. The layering continues until bits of it fall off into the food service/cooking area where it becomes part of your next meal.... or directly into your fresh cup of coffee or your kid's slurpee.

  22. Having installed fire systems in commercial kitchens for years if you think this is bad try looking behind the scenes in a kitchen itself. You will never want to eat out again. And I am talking some 4 and 5 star restaurants i have worked in. This is nothing......

    ReplyDelete
  23. The store should be cleaned better. I would bet most of you would be disgusted to see what is behind the scenes at many of the stores and restaurants in the area. The problem today is that many workers look upon the businesses they work for as needing them more than they need their jobs. Not much pride put into the job and poor work ethics. I do agree that a professional company should be doing the kind of cleaning that needs to be done. Climbing ladders to clean the ceiling isn't something I would want to do either. Royal farms should re-think the open ceiling design. Having said that I think a call or an email to the corporate office would have sufficed. Maybe send along the photos also. I think the microbiology lab expert just got a little butt hurt that the "manager" didn't bow down and kiss their proverbial ring. So they had to post the story and the photos so they could get some attention. There are much better ways to get results instead of lifting yourself up by trying to embarrass someone else.

Lastly Royal Farms has pretty good fried chicken and a cute cashier that works some mornings.

  25. Seriously if you go in the back of some 5 star restaurant's, grocery store raw meat areas and stock rooms, large a calendar handling facilities, you would never want to eat out and grow everything yourself I a PERFECT world hence all the recalls, salmonella and ecoli outbreaks

  26. Are you kidding me? Boycott until it is cleared up? If this is in the customers site, just imagine what is in the back. Have you ever smelled a rotten milk odor when you open the door to where the milk is sold? It doesn’t come with the milk. Ask them if you can see where the chicken is prepared. Look at who is making your food, nails clean? Under the nails? Nasty.
Why would they ever clean the ceiling if no one is worried about that area?
You know repeated calls to health department would fix the issues you see. I do believe they must respond to every call. Sooner or later they will get upset and start to fine them. That will create a public record which will be noticed by those towns and city’s that do not know what they are getting into when Rofo wants to grow there.
For all the money pumped into all the Rofo in this area has anyone heard of them donating to this area? I mean really? We have a homeless problem, drug problem and many other issues they could give back something.
I will show my appreciation by never stepping foot in the new one near Salisbury u.

  27. Rofo take knee!!! Keep supporting the NFL

  28. 6:39pm, Yes they do donate back into the community. When they have a grand opening they will donate a check to more than several charities at the function.

  29. First of all. Lets not all pile on just Royal Farms. The Wawa on South Salisbury has been disgusting every time I've been in there.
Second, I went to culinary school and had to take a semester of food safety, run by the state board of health. The State Health Department sets the standards that all counties are to follow. That being said I have worked in several restaurants in 3 different counties and Baltimore City. I've worked in Wicomico County for the past 20 years. It's a joke in this county as to which inspector you get. A few are totally by the book and hard as nails. A few have on blinders and you can bluff your way to a clean inspection. Use your own judgment. If you walk in the front door and the floor is dirty there's a good chance the kitchen is to. If there's an odd smell and it doesn't smell like food that's never a good sign.

  30. 7;22 ok one time to get the attention and press. What after that? I have seen on this site areas in need. Never once have I seen Rofo pitch in one Eastern Shore. Nothing Nadia Zip. Don’t remember ever seeing them help anything on this side of the bay.

Those words were never said it's crazy that someone thinks a 5'4" girl is going to get on a ladder and clean these high ceilings. We were always told that we had to clean them ourselves we were never aware that we had professionals to clean them.Someone did come to clean it a couple days after the incident

  35. Joe, you have hit the nail-on-the head with these photographs. The very first thing that I do when I enter any eatery is to look-up at the HVAC return and supply registers. These photos speaks a loud volume of filth for this facility. It really ought to be shut down.

  37. Looks like the local government's health department isn't doing their job. What do they do all day to earn their taxpayer financed paychecks? Sit at the end of deadend streets and sleep?

    ReplyDelete
  38. ROYAL FILTH .I never really understood why people flock to these s#$%holes to buy expensive coffee to pull coffee pot handles behind someone who last had there hands on there crotch or dinglebury road.

    ReplyDelete
  39. HVAC registers tell a multitude about the operations of food establishments.
Also, the oven ventilation hoods. Neglect of either one of these key components is a dead give-a-way on poor clinical hygiene. I agree with some of the other posters, these facilities should be shutdown. And the overseeing health departments should be reprimanded. And that raises the 1 million dollar question, who is policing the health department?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Responding to 10:44 Poster that said, Who is Policing the health department?

Why should anyone expect that? They have a license to sell food and are required to conform to standards. If they don't, they can be fined, license taken away, etc.

Ignoring any problems is what leads to sickness, disease, and death. Nobody should just "get over it". Anyone not following standards and/or obey the law needs to be reported. They are given a chance to correct any failures and if discrepancies are found again, more measures are taken.

  46. Believe me, the Wicomico Health Dept. isn't going to enforce anything when it come to cleanliness, let alone shut a food establishment down for being nasty.
