WCSO Press Release

Date of Incident: 11 October 2017
Location: Sharptown, MD

Narrative: On 12 October 2017, the Sheriff’s Office began investigating an incident that reportedly occurred the previous day at approximately 10 AM in Sharptown. The reported incident generated concern among local community members of a possible attempted abduction. At this time, the Sheriff’s Office can not substantiate those concerns. The investigation has only revealed a conversation that included a subject asking two juveniles on Main Street as to why they were not in school and where they were supposed to be. Due to student testing, many students had a delayed arrival and were picked up later in the morning on a second bus run. This information regarding the conversation between this subject was the same information that was relayed to the Sheriff’s Office the previous evening at 6:04 PM when the initial complaint regarding this incident was telephoned into the Sheriff’s Office. At no time was it implied that this individual attempted to either abduct or entice these children into his vehicle.

The deputy investigating this incident also checked the town looking for a vehicle that matched the description provided to no avail.

The investigation included meeting with those who made the original report and as of now, there is no indication that an attempted abduction was planned nor is there information indicated this unknown individual attempted to coax these individuals into his vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to remain vigilant and to always report suspicious activity to the non-emergency line at 410-548-4890

  2. 504 Be careful with your judgement call. There are hundreds if not thousands of children kidnapped every year not to mention child abduction for slavery in other countries. I would rather make an error on the side of caution and WILL report anything suspicious when it comes to children. Thank you for posting the proper non-emergency line. Thank you Joe.

  4. I saw some comments on the sheriff's page from some residents of that "beautiful town". (their words, not mine)

They just didn't want to accept what a deputy told them about it probably being nothing since this guy did not try to entice them into getting into his vehicle or anything sinister.

Anything is possible in this day and age but my impression is the teenagers panicked, or overreacted or were just bored and tried to get some excitement in that little town.

    Much ado about nothing.

  5. 7:18 The majority of abducted children are taken by a relative or person known to them. Do some factual research. This has nothing to do with other countries, Look at a map. The eastern shore is a wart on the US and not where people come to abduct children.

  6. As the mother of one of the children that was asked these questions I find it disgusting and disrespectful to be told that this could all be perfectly harmless by the sheriff's department. This is a smack in the face to myself and my child. There was also another child present with her who was approached and asked the same exact questions. Not only were they questioned why they weren't in school but he wanted to know where they lived. This is not perfectly harmless.

Do you think someone is going to abduct children if the person didn't even make an attempt.

Do you think a person is going to abduct a child when there are other children around.

You ma'am have been off your meds too long. Please see a doctor.
