Maryland sees 1,172 fatal overdoses through June

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - Maryland saw more than 1,100 overdose-related deaths between January and June of this year, including 799 deaths from fentanyl.

The biggest rise continues to be from fentanyl, an opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin. Exposure to it can even be threatening to first responders and their canines.

"We continue to see a dramatic increase in the number of overdose deaths connected to fentanyl, and the Maryland Department of Health is committed to building a continuum of care for those with substance use disorders," said state Health Secretary Dennis Schrader in a statement announcing the second-quarter overdose numbers.

"We are working closely with local jurisdictions to analyze the data and inform overdose and opioid misuse prevention strategy to leverage the state's unprecedented investment in prevention, treatment and recovery resources," said Schrader.

In the second quarter of the year - January through June - there were 1,172 overdose-related deaths in the state.

Fentanyl deaths alone grew by more than 300 between the first and second quarter.

  4. Here's what I don't understand...If you are selling a product of any kind legal or not, that the human body can ingest, swallow, snort, inject or whatever and you want to keep selling that product to said person...Why would you poison that product??? Cause you just lost that sale forever.

  6. 7:32...your ignorance is blissful for you. The numbers support young white ...educated...working class males who are overdosing. If you think the welfare rolls are reduced you are sadly incorrect. READ PEOPLE.....READ!!!
