Another South Bound Section To Be Added To Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, WHY?

First let me say, I have never experienced any traffic whatsoever heading south bound on the Bay Bridge Tunnel. However, I have experienced a TON of traffic in numerous tunnels throughout the Virginia Beach areas. I'm confident many of you have experienced the same.

So you have to wonder, WHY do we let politicians make such stupid and extremely expensive moves? It's nothing like dealing with east bound traffic heading across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, yet they are ready to spend $700,000,000.00+ to build this new span into Virginia.

Let's not forget that the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was 100% paid for several years ago and when it was built our politicians assured Americans it would be FREE once it was paid off, they LIED.

When I look at the Salisbury Bypass and watch them rebuilding all of the overpasses after 20 years, (or so) it makes me wonder, is this a scam? Are politicians lining their pockets with selected contractors? Is the contractor who constructed those overpasses still in business? What was the guarantee back then? There is just no way those overpasses should be failing.

Where is the accountability? Why aren't they adding more lanes and an additional bridge from Annapolis to Ocean City, where it would actually make sense? Sorry, nothing our elected officials do make any sense whatsoever, including a new bridge into Ocean City.

  1. Nothing politicians do makes any sense, it's all about lining their pockets.

  2. Adding the second tunnels actually makes sense considering that this is a major bridge along the east coast. I will be needed in the event that something was to happen to the existing tunnels.

  3. There is one BIG difference between the Bridge tunnel and the bridge. One is in Virginia and one is in Maryland. Maybe Virginia has better lobbyists?

  4. Politicians go in poor and in a few years have joined the millionare's club! Yet not one will say that they have lined their pockets. Career politician needs to end! It was suppose to be to serve the people not to get rich and do nothing but put more laws and regulations on the books. There are so many now no one could possibly know them all. Everyday we break some unknown law or regulation without knowing it!

  5. 9:53, I think we all know the difference between states. My point is, there's very little, (if any) traffic south bound on the Bay Bridge Tunnel. There is massive congestion heading to and from the beach traffic on the Bay Bridge. Even if they put a third span on the Bay Bridge it won't stop the major traffic all the way to OC. They need a third lane each way and quite frankly since OC is the 2nd highest tax revenue for the entire state, we deserve much better and so do the very people who bring all that money here.

  6. They also need an overpass @ 404 & 213 so they can remove the stoplights.

  7. The bay bridge-tunnel is a private funding project. VDOT has no control over this highway system to date. All major funding has come from private sources bonds etc. This is why it is listed as an engineering marvel of the world. So they can build what they want.

  8. if I'm not mistaken, the CBBT is a self-funded entity and does not receive state funding, but pays for the upkeep and construction via tolls and by issuing it's own municipal bonds. (and of course traffic fines out the wazzoo!)
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do know that the CBBT is it's own municipality.
So, if they feel the need for another tunnel, it's their prerogative.

  9. VA Legislature believes, eventually more traffic from the northeast corridor will head south and now is the time to build it.

Amazing they are doing this with the lack of resources given their ZERO stance on casino gaming. VA loses so much revenue in Northern VA to WV and MD with gaming (casinos) maybe something is in the future works?

MD legislature needs to make decisions about another bridge further down the Chesapeake to lessen traffic at the Bay Bridge. It won't happen of course...adding a lane to the existing bridges won't do anything long term.

  10. Hurricane evacuation route?

  11. They need to add another bridge at the bay side going to Baltimore to ease traffic, or add a bridge off the coast of Cambridge over to the western shore so we can get to southern Maryland faster... In-stead of having to go all the way to the bay bridge and then down, which takes 3 to 4 to 5 hours...

  12. The money is for the construction of two new tunnels so they can get away from the single lane tunnels, its safer and is a good idea.
