Man Drowns In Ocean City Despite Water Rescue

A 35-year-old man drowned while swimming in the ocean near First Street hours after lifeguards had left the stands on Monday.

The man’s name has not been released, as his family has not been notified, according to Ocean City Communications Manager Jessica Waters.

Around 7:20 p.m., Ocean City Beach Patrol and fire department rescue swimmers responded to a 911 call for a swimmer in distress. Ocean City Police, the Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard also responded.

  1. 90% of the time ppl drown because they panic. If you're caught in a rip tide DO NOT PANIC. Swim up or down parallel to the beach but don't swim like Micheal Phelps is chasing you, smooth breast strokes. You can see rip currents, look for boiling type water or foamy water in a line heading out, stay away from it. They are at most 20 yards wide and only 60-70 yards long. Let them take you and swim back in once clear.

  2. Yup, you can back float forever. Unless a Man O' war comes by. Then you swim some more! Relax, take your time, rips are only near shore and then they're gone so you can swim again. RIDE it, don't fight it.
