Foreign Seasonal Worker Suffered Broken Pelvis In Compactor Accident; Fundraising Effort Launched

OCEAN CITY — A foreign J-1 student trapped in a trash compactor at a north-end hotel last Saturday night suffered a broken pelvis and is on the mend, but will likely require multiple surgeries.

Around 5 p.m. last Friday, Ocean City emergency services responded to a reported individual trapped in a commercial trash compactor at the Carousel Hotel on 118th Street. First-responders found the victim, Petr Konig from the Czech Republic, a seasonal worker at the hotel in Ocean City on a J-1 work-travel visa, stuck in the trash compactor from the waist down.

Emergency crews extricated Konig from the trash compactor and the victim was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma with critical injuries below the waist. According to reliable sources, Konig had been looking for his shoes and was told by a co-worker that they had been inadvertently thrown away.

  1. Again with the gofund me. It's called workers compensation insurance. He's covered.

  2. Should be covered under employer health care insurance. The
tax payers should in no way be responsible for his care.

  3. This kid isn't going to be able to travel by air for at least three months after his surgery(ies) if it all goes well. During that time he has to have a place to live, food to eat and transportation provided by someone else; and then there's the money that he won't be going home with from his summer job. He might get something from the company's insurance, but insurance always comes up late and short in cases like this.
I threw him a few bucks. It didn't hurt me and it can help him.

  4. What a great country that he came to so
he could do menial work for low wages. Now he will get workman's comp for his self inflicted injuries due to his own negligence, and disability pay to boot. With the fundraising, he will return to his native country as the equivalent of a millionaire (if he goes back). Not only that, but I'm sure an attorney is just waiting to contact him to talk him into suing the employer.

  5. 3:14 - He went to retrieve his shoes that were inadvertently thrown away. How is that negligent? I'm sure he didn't know the trash compactor would turn on.

  6. I knew a lot of foriegn workers, they don't really buy much while they are here so they can save it to go home. Had a guy show up to a construction site in swim trunks for two weeks and old shoes on. Went with him to t so he could get cheap shorts and shoes for work. He was trying to save the money for his mother and sisters, bros in russia.

  7. 2:40 PM between food stamps, disability and work comp I am sure he will be doing just fine. Probably better than he was getting for the minimum wage they were paying him.
