City seeks $99K in bike path funds

Ocean City is hoping to keep the wheels turning on plans for a bicyclist-friendly resort, as city officials applied for a grant to build two more uptown bike paths.

If the Maryland Department of Transportation funds the $99,000 the resort requested this month, Jamaica Avenue, Assawoman Drive and Wight Street will be fitted with the signs and Thermoplastic markings for the designated path.

Engineering Manager Paul Mauser, the point person on the bike paths, said this arrangement is similar to the MDOT’s Bikeways Program approval earlier this year of the trail that follows Sinepuxent Avenue.

“As the town looks to provide alternative routes besides Coastal Highway, these three roads are extremely popular with pedestrians and bicyclists,” Mauser said. “Unlike Sinepuxent, these bike paths would be shared lanes with traffic. The signs will be a way to externalize the new project to drivers.”

  1. OC should spend their own money. MDOT should not be funding this type of project when they could be spending this on repairing roadways instead of always complaining about lack of funds for road / bridge repair. Gas tax being raised blaming no funds and MDOT throws away money for these types of non-road /bridge repair. Bicycles pay nothing for their pleasure while they want others to pay for their pleasure. For all you that will say good health and exercise, why is it everybody cannot ride a bike due to several conditions. What are you paying for them. Maryland needs a bicycle users tax then it will equal out.

    2. If bike riders should pay a taxed for bike lanes and using the road shouldn't pedestrians be taxed for cross walks and using the road?

  2. If you want to ride a bicycle on the highway then it should have to be tagged/taxed just like a vehicle.

  3. OC should definitely address other imp changes before a bike path. And oay for it themselves or have bikers py a reg fee to cover the cost. We drivers should be able to focus on other drivers, not bikes. In OC, there are too many pedestrians, buses, drunks, cars, etc in the streets without adding more destractions. Put a path along the actual beach line like Virginia beach did; they have the perfect pedestrian and biker model. A path runs the length of the beach, oceanfront, next to the boardwalk. You can ride a trolley etc all day if you want without ever encountering a car or walker. With the crowds in OC, surely funds arent a problem. Use the money from the 100 nights of light as this is the sorriest waste of money...

  4. I didn't realize Ocean City was as stupid or simple as Salisbury. Some of these paths or trails will get a cyclist killed in a second. Example, Northbound in front of Arby's across from SSU. Hazardous to your health.

  5. 2:53 does not want to pay up like a good OC liberal Democrat and follow, his master, Obama's agenda and pay his fair share.

  6. Don't do it Ocean City. The bike riders think they own the streets and roads here in Salisbury. They will not move for traffic. They do not obey street signs and traffic lights. They hinder the flow of traffic. Rare to actually see someone riding their bike in the proper manner and the way the Maryland laws say they have to. Pain in our butts.
