Worcester County reduces cell tower distances

Providing optimal cell service along busy highways in Worcester County is the intent of a zoning text amendment approved by the county commissioners on Tuesday.

The amendment establishes a separation distance of 500 feet for cell towers along high demand transportation corridors, which is half the previous permitted distance, but would require a special exception from the county Board of Zoning Appeals.

The proposal was submitted by attorney Raymond Smethurst Jr. on behalf of the Columbia-based Cellco Partnership, operating under the Verizon Wireless moniker, and only affects roads with an average daily traffic volume exceeding 10,000 trips per day.

Zoning Deputy Director Phyllis Wimbrow said the only area roads carrying that volume of traffic are routes 50, 90, 12 113 and a portion of Route 589.

The continually increasing demand for cell service necessitated the zoning revision, Smethurst said.

  1. What happened to all that money the county/state spent on the Maryland Broadband Cable initiative?
I'm still waiting for the benefit. My company still has super slow connections and excessive downtime. Where did that money go? Did they create another agency to over hire and overpay more government employees?
Might want to start a new investigation into that group. I think it was called Maryland Broadband Company or Coop or something. are they still around and what did they do with the money?

  3. Oh, the beauty of cell phone towers. It would be a travesty if some woman or teenager was not able to talk on their cell phone while driving.

  6. Md Broadband is a non profit, just gets grants and taxpayer funding from swamp democrats and pays directors big money and does very little.

  7. oh, non-profit means wasting other peoples money, right? your right, non-profits do overpay directors a lot of times. are they in Salisbury or Easton or Annapolis? somewhere else. Our internet is so freeking slow on the shore and so is our cell phone service. when I travel, I can download on my phone faster than my office PC in Salisbury. So, what did that money go for? Someone said it was for NASA or DOD. If so, why didn't it come from their budgets? They promised to make our service faster. Another lie from bureaucrats and politicians.
