Daytona veteran beaten up for trying to save turtle's life, police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Three young men were arrested Tuesday after police said they beat up a Navy veteran who asked them to stop torturing a turtle, according to Daytona Beach police.

A woman was walking her toddler around a pond at Wedgewood Apartments and told police she saw three men torturing a turtle. She went home and told her husband, Gary Blough, they were “smashing up a turtle.”

Blough went outside and said he saw a group of three men repeatedly abusing the animal, according to the police report.

"The one had it over his head and he was smashing it down on the sidewalk," Blough said. "I asked them to please leave it alone, just let it go to the lake."

  4. Sorry this happened to a veteran and thank you sir. Anyone that would do that to a turtle will surely do the same to a human. And that would be because they are not human. The positive of this story is they will be convicted of at least animal cruelty. We realize the court system may not be too concerned on the assault of the veteran. Come on Donald...kick some ass while in charge.

  6. This is the mentality of what we are dealing
with in America. They have no feelings for
    any living being.
They should be hung up & beaten !!!
There is NO LAW strict enough for crimes
such as this & animals is where these type
    people start -----
    because animals can't defend themselves.!!
When will the Laws in our Country get
    changed to stop this !!!

  8. When I think of how that sea turtle started out from digging out of its shell and then the sand when it was born, then avoiding being eaten by predators on the beach on its way to the water, then the predators in the surf, it's just wrong that it should have suffered a painful and pointless death at the hands of these lowest of the low predators who did it for sport.
Kudos to the GW vet who tried to stop them, and wishes for a speedy recovery.
To the young perpetrators, we all hope to be protected from the likes of you.

  10. Sounds to me like they should be tried for attempted murder. After all they didn't stop beating on the veteran until other neighbors came out. They would probably have beaten him to death just like they did the turtle.

  13. When young people abuse animals, it is often a predictor of violence towards other people in the future. Not a pretty picture.
