Another wind project targets resort waters

Another firm, Skipjack Offshore Wind LLC, has submitted a proposal to build and operate a wind farm on a lease 17 miles northeast of the Maryland-Delaware border, and hopes to locate in the greater Ocean City area.

“Our principal goal is the lowest possible cost,” CEO Jeff Grybowski said. “Construction of the turbines would be somewhere in Baltimore because we need the space — maybe at one of the former shipyards, but we’re only looking at Ocean City,” for the support services for the farm and its equipment, he said.

Grybowski said the idea behind his proposal is to start small.

“If we built out our lease to capacity, we could fit 800 megawatts in the whole site,” he said. However, the initial proposal is for 120 megawatts. US Wind is proposing a 750-megawatt farm. The state provides offshore renewable energy credits for up to 250 total megawatts to help finance the projects and to create demand for this type of power.

  2. These "environmentalists" would never be successful running a real business.

  3. I'm all for sustainable energy, but there is an economic breakpoint that needs to be met first. Look at the recent $1.39 per day savings at the wind project in Washington state. Seriously? I think you could save that by turning off a couple of lights. Seems like wind power is more fake news that environmentalists convince the liberal press to promote. Until they can PROVE it is economically and eco friendly power that we -the rate payers- don't have to subsidize, I'm all for it. Until then, continue with solar. Or lets try tidal. Happens 4 times a day, everyday. and would kill fewer birds. Let our STEM students work on that.

    1. I agree. Let's start teaching the next generation especially about turning off lights, unplugging phone chargers, not leaving game systems on, and putting on a sweat shirt when it's chilly instead of cranking up the heat. All of those things really do make a difference!
