Hearing This Week For Study On Third Span Of Bay Bridge

A legislative committee in Annapolis will hold a hearing later this week on a proposal to approve state funding for an environmental impact study to see if a third span of the Bay Bridge can be built in the coming years.

The legislation is sponsored by Eastern Shore Senator and former Ocean City Mayor Jim Mathias. The measure passed in the Senate last week.

The Maryland Transportation Authority would have to set aside one-million dollars or five percent of the cost each year for the environmental impact study. MdTA officials have said they are concerned about the cost of the study and the damage to the agency's credit rating.

Mathias tells WBAL News Now that creating another way for drivers to get from the western to eastern shore is important not only for businesses in that part of the state but for public safety.

  1. This shouldn't be a priority with the state's finances being the way they are.
That's how they got to be such a mess.. just focus on getting the basic stuff back in order.
BTW-- Have you re-funded the retirement system money that was mis-appropriated over the past years? The money that was stolen to pay for other things?

  2. I keep asking the same question over: Where will more people go if you build more capacity to go there? The OC Air show and July 4th ALREADY consumes all available parking in OC alone. Mass transit alternatives offer the only practible investments.

  3. If Jim Mathias is behind it, then there is nothing good about is. He only does what he thinks is best for himself.

  4. The only reason we have traffic backup is because of the toll.
More people need to get EZ Pass. That eliminates the stopping back up
and the time it takes to get through the toll booth.

  5. close all bridges, they stay on that side, we'll stay on this side.

  6. A real shame that Jim lacks the same enthusiasm to defend the second amendment as he does to spend tax payer money. No sense of priorities from another political crony.

  7. The only 'third span' we need across the bay needs to be south. A ferry out of Crisfield to some point in Southern MD or VA.
I'll guarantee that if you look deep enough into this bridge deal you'll find someone's brother-in-law/uncle/nephew/whatever contractor waiting in the wings.

  9. I have to agree with 11:00 am. When there is an event like a "weekend", Ocean city has no problem filling up. The only traffic chokehold is the toll backup, so get rid of that for a year and "study that"!
