Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen Announces There Will Be No Field Trips into Baltimore City This Week

Statement from Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen:

There will be no field trips from Wicomico County Public Schools into Baltimore City for the remainder of this week due to the possibility of civil unrest. The jury is deliberating in the trial of the first police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray. Out of concern for the safety and security of Wicomico students, the school system has elected to cancel any field trips this week that would have placed students in Baltimore City.

The only scheduled Wicomico field trip was one for Fruitland Intermediate students, who would have gone to the National Aquarium on Wednesday.

Wicomico schools will close for the winter holiday break at the end of the school day Friday, Dec. 18.

Baltimore County Public Schools has also cancelled field trips into the city, in consultation with law enforcement. Baltimore City Public Schools announced a heightened state of awareness and said its paramount concern is the safety and well-being of students and staff. The Maryland Center for Safe Schools is coordinating communications regarding school system field trips into Baltimore City.

  1. It's sad for the kids but I have to say I agree with this decision. No way I would want my kid in Baltimore this week. If that verdict comes down not guilty I can see that city burning.

  10. What a shame that our children are being held captive because of a threat from black thugs. Somebody needs to put their food down. If it takes force then so be it. Fact is, local kids are being held hostage and not able to freely visit Baltimore. It's time for a leadership change and it's up to the voters to do it.

  11. A potential "teachable moment"' cause may well be unfolding. If taught from a civilized perspective.

A sociological, cultural, sociologicall, political, economic, zoological and ethhnopathological lesson could be indelibly learned, with truthful and unbiased guiding narrative.
