    I get the intended point, but this one falls flat.

    It connotes a reward earned after much personal effort and self discipline.

    Food stamps and Section 8 housing are NOT earned, and they are too often the result of lack of self discipline and lack of real effort.

    The young man is deservedly proud of his accomplishment, and nothing should mock that.
