Berlin Eyes $3M In Bond Market To Buy Tyson Property; Potential Uses Being Evaluated By Consulting Firm

BERLIN – Town officials agreed this week to enter the bond market to fund the purchase and the start of redevelopment of the former Tyson plant property.

The Berlin Town Council voted 4-0 this week to issue and sell general obligation bonds in the amount of $3 million. The move is expected to provide the town with $2.5 million to purchase the property and $500,000 to start work on the site. Though a formal plan for the property has yet to be decided upon, a variety of public uses — including a skateboard park and swimming pool — are being considered.

“This is a property we’re taking from the outhouse to the penthouse in terms of its value to the community,” Mayor Gee Williams said.

By entering the bond market now, town officials are expecting to go to settlement on the property, which is currently owned by Berlin Properties North, in February.

  1. Since Perdue is moving out of the state, they're not interested. If Berlin buys it - it comes OFF the tax rolls to become a public asset that requires money be put in to it.

I think they should continue to let Tyson pay the taxes....

  2. I want to buy it before they do and build a Burlington Coat Factory and Cracker Barrel on it.Judging from this post it has not officially been sold yet.

  3. 8:45, Perdue is NOT moving out of the state. STOP listening to WBOC. Only a very small portion of Perdue corporate office is relocating. I believe it's 94 people. Perdue's corporate office will remain in Salisbury with the MAJORITY of their staff staying. As for the rest of your comment, good point.

  4. I can't believe he said "outhouse" , I bet he didn't call it an outhouse when they were receiving all that revenue from the company.

  7. Joe -- You said "Only a very small portion of Perdue corporate office is relocating"

Ever heard of "tip of the iceberg"???

Perdue will be gone from Salisbury/Wicomico as soon as Jimmy P is no longer in charge -- either by retirement or selling out to another owner.

BTW -- how much of the overall Perdue enterprise is located in Maryland rather than elsewhere???

  8. The Mayor is out of control. Anyone attending the meeting on Monday saw his hot headed attitude when taxpayers questioned about their taxes increasing. He chastised the citizen just like he does to everyone who does not agree with him. Remember how he treated the person asking about parking on the sidewalks on William St. He acts like a spoiled brat and when he doesn't get his way....look out for retaliation. He says Berlin is not becoming Salisbury but he seems to act just like the Salisbury mayor with his little "fits" that he throws.
No one is reporting the next lawsuit coming against the town regarding the Dollar General Sale. The town fought the Dollar General going in one location then sold the property to have them move to another. What do you think is going to happen now to the other property due to the lost sale that the town gained financially from?
