LETTER TO EDITOR:

We've all seen sheriff's deputies plenty of times with their elbows in the air jabbering away on their handheld cell phones while driving. They all claim they possess some superhuman abilities that us mere mortals don't have, and that they can drive with one hand and hold the phone with the other. Never needing to use a turn signal, turn on lights/sirens, operate a spotlight, operate their radio, etc. Just need two hands one for their phone and one for their steering wheel.

My question is this. Why can't Mike Lewis purchase $35 bluetooth speakerphones that clip onto the sun visor for these deputies to use? They are readily available at Walmart and Amazon. Wouldn't that make more sense?? Certainly they can afford $35 per car with all of the grants they receive and drug money they seize? What's their fancy light packages cost per car? And their expensive huge SUVs that their supervisors drive?

Speaking of the SUVS, since I saw a deputy driving his department issued SUV on Beaglin Park Dr. just a few minute ago, heavily engaged in his phone call - don't those come with bluetooth speakerphones built into them? Why don't the deputies sync with them? Perhaps the police issue cars might not have bluetooth built in, but there's no way those SUVs don't.

How many single vehicle accidents have all 3 local departments had over the past 2 or 3 years again? Oh, I forgot, deer ran out in front of all of them, right?

  2. They are exempt from the rule of law. So if you do not agree with it, then become a police officer yourself. If not stop complaining.

    1. They're exempt from damn near all laws. Almost like diplomatic immunity but for thugs.

    1. Authority? All men are equal. I have no authority over seeing me. I am a free man. I'll do what I damn well please when I want. Yes been arrested before. And beat every case.

  6. Deer do run out in front of the all the time. But that's not your point here. The law does exempt them while engaged in official business. Are they always engaged in official business? Hmmm. But there is no law that exempts police on the window tint laws. Discuss that for a while?

  7. I've seen deputies out of the county doing 80+. Obviously, the "we're on a call" excuse doesn't work out of jurisdiction.

It's sad to see the high standards Mike Lewis used to have no longer at the department. I guess he's too busy getting ready to go on Fox News to care about that kind of stuff any longer.

    2. Same. Seen him out of uniform with what I'd assume is family burning the road up. Sickens me. If something happens and a family member is in the vehicle and gets hurt.. The cop will retire and live comfortable off the money his family gets from us! I can almost see a cop doing something on purpose to get money. Have heard that cops are faking injuries now they're getting even more money while " hurt" from work. Smdh. Crooked ass cops.

  9. How about the one that ran the stoplight on Mill St and Carroll St yesterday? This is SOP for cops. That is why I always figure the other guy will do the dumbest thing possible, especially if it a cop!

  10. I don't think they even stop regular motorists for talking on their cell phones. Everyone seems to do it and no one gets stopped.

  11. It just goes to show that it is a profit generator and excuse to stop only. If the police believed the law made us safer they would follow it. I got in an accident because of a cell phone (constant calls from boss) and will not touch it while I'm driving now, but I still don't think it should be a law. There are 1000 other things I could do to distract myself legally, so what's the point. You won't see eating and driving made illegal. Fast food lobbyists would never allow it. Cell service providers don't care, they already have your money whether you use the phone or not.

  13. We tend to forget LEOs are forced to go through rigorous driver training. The training is so tough many of us would not be willing to endure. With the extra skills and awareness this training instills in those who pass, the inattentiveness lay folks display while on the phone or driving fast is more than overcome.

  14. As a retired Deputy, we pretty much can, and will do as we please. No one is ever going to stop us for speeding in a patrol car, no one is going to ticket us for using our phones. We are the law! Give us some lip, or back talk, and we will make your life miserable, we can plant drugs, or guns on you, we can lie, and say you threatened us, or someone else. A little tip for our department to Homeland and your done. Just think about that next time you badmouth one of us!

    1. Lmao. Amazing how they admit it. I know its anonymous but we know its really a dried up piece of bacon. They know what they can do to people with the retributions. I cannot wait to the people and the law go at it. Just polishing my widow makers.

What about all of the Salisbury Fire Department Staff vehicles with their tinted windows? They took all of their vehicles and spent city tax dollars in Delmar Delaware getting them tinted. Not that is a fact and no one complained about that atrocity.

  18. If they sync their phones then there is a real good chance their conversations will be recorded and available to be used against them. They're not stupid. Just dumb. I believe that alot of money has been spent in Wicomico on new radios and communications. Why can't these deputies be on record 100% while in their vehicles? Why can't they use the radios on their shoulders and cars. Many talk groups to talk on. So don't give me it keeps the air waves open. I know better
