Ruby Tuesday to close 30 restaurants following quarterly losses

MARYVILLE (WATE) – Ruby Tuesday will close 30 restaurants over the next few months, though they won’t say which ones.

The announcement comes with the company’s report that it sustained more than 34 million dollars in losses in the last quarter.

Ruby Tuesday is in the midst of yet another brand transformation right now, which they say focuses on reclaiming their heritage as a “casual, affordable, energetic and approachable” place to eat.

The problem for Ruby Tuesday came nearly a decade ago when they tried to break away from the bar and grille competition, elevate the chain and attract more affluent customers.

“What they couldn’t see coming was the change in the economy and the market. By the time they implemented that plan, people were very leery of going out and spending $80 or $90 for a family of four to have burgers,” said Rick Laney of Rick Laney Marketing.

He says later decisions didn’t help things.

  1. I'm so surprised because politicians keep saying things are good and getting better out here,NOT!

  2. The problem I've had with all of these type of restaurants is the quality of the food varies to much. You can have a good meal 1 time and go back the next week and the same meal will be lousy. Maybe if they paid a little extra money to hire better cooks they might find that the quality of the product will improve and make people want to return.

  3. Hope they don't close the one in Fruitland. Been there many times and enjoyed it every time. Food and service both grrat.

  4. Anon 1:19 these restaurants are idiot proof, working in those type kitchens are essentially like working an assembly line. More experienced cooks/chefs get promoted to managers or go to other places. Ruby Tuesdays has been struggling ever since they transitioned to a more upscale atmosphere. Remember when it had a sports theme?

  6. That's because Ruby Tuesday's food sucks. Nothing to do with the economy or Obamacare. Maybe it does good on the peninsula but where there are many restaurants to choose from hardly anyone chooses Ruby Tuesday.

  7. Had one of the worst meals and horrible service at the Ruby Tuesdays located in Easton Md. They used to serve fresh baked bread with every meal. No longer. You have to request it, and you now get charged extra for it. Salad bar stinks and I had to wear a coat because there was no heat when I was there in February. Definitely not the same place as when the food and service were great years ago.

    1. I work at one across the bridge of the charged you for bread you need to make a corporate complaint because they can't do that. I don't even know how they could manipulate the system to do that but if they are report them.

  8. No doubt the one in the mall will fold up, they couldn't even keep a McDonalds in there. Too much rent and not enough revenue. There are plenty enough locally owned places with pizza, burgers, subs and I just won't spend a cent in ANY franchise restaurant and make it harder on locals than it already is, franchises are like buzzards, they just waitin' for something to die so they can pick it's eyes out.

  10. The eastern shore district is one of the top in the company. The Pocomoke store is the top one in the entire MD Va Del region.

  12. Their frozen salad bar is ridiculous. The food is frozen to the bottom of the plate/canister.

  13. Never had a meal there that didn't deserve a complaint.

  14. Relax... they are not closing in Salisbury or Fruitland. All this area does for entertainment is eat out. No matter what night you go out the places are packed. Kinda makes you wonder where the money comes from.
