Muslim Killed N.J. Teen 'For Being An American'

A confessed domestic terrorist sits in prison after using information obtained from the Southern Poverty Law Center to target workers at a Christian organization in Washington, a case that drew little attention from the Obama administration.

A “gay”-rights advocate, he attacked Christians identified by SPLC as members of a “hate” organization for their opposition to homosexual behavior.

Now, an alleged Muslim terrorist has described his brutal killing of a New Jersey teen “for being American” as a “just kill,” and a radio talk-show host says he’s not going to let it slide this time.

“It was, in fact, an act of jihad, perpetrated by a fellow American who sympathized more with those who want to annihilate us than with his own country and its people,” said radio host Todd Pettengill of “The Todd Show” on WPLJ in New York City.

He discussed for eight minutes on air the death of 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin, recounting the declaration by the suspect, Ali Muhammad Brown, 29, that the June 25 attack was a “just kill.”

Why sugar is worse than fat

Fareed speaks with CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta about recent research on the risks of high sugar consumption. Watch the video for the full interview.

For 20 years, people have been assuming that fat was the enemy because it produced cholesterol, which was blocking arteries. That's not quite right.

I could talk about this all day long, because I think it highlights some very important things in terms of how we sometimes misinterpret science, or at least exaggerate it.

It was in the late '70s – in fact, there was a Senate commission, Senator McGovern, who actually looked at this issue and found that people who had very high levels of cholesterol tended to die early of heart disease. And there was also other studies that showed if you ate a diet high in fat, it raised your cholesterol. But those were two different studies. And they got really, really linked, not only by the Senate, but also in the scientific community and then by everybody else.

Md. Man Arraigned After 2-year Investigation In Stock Scheme

Four of eight people charged in a penny stock "pump and dump" scheme that defrauded $290 million from thousands of investors were arraigned on Thursday following a two-year investigation.

Anthony Thompson, 38, of Bethesda, Maryland, Jay Fung, 40, of Delray Beach, Florida, Hanna Schmieder, 39, of Los Angeles and Kenneth Oxsalida, 59, of Sebring, Florida, all pleaded not guilty before Judge Roger Hayes in in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Thompson, Fung and another stock promoter sent out email blasts from websites they controlled promoting stocks to potential investors while working with others in the scheme as they allegedly took control of public shell companies, merged private companies into them, then transferred millions of shares to themselves and drove up the price of the stocks, prosecutors said.

Once they controlled the shares, prosecutors said the defendants then sent out press releases promoting companies such as Xynergy Holdings Inc. and Mass Hysteria Entertainment Co. but cashed their shares before the stocks plummeted.

Probiotics Prevent Heart Attack: Researchers

When we think of bacteria, we tend to think of disease-causing microbes that threaten our health, with antibacterial products all the rage and antibiotics among the most prescribed medicines doctors dole out. But in fact, many of the trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive tracts are “good bacteria” — essential to our health.

Some help us digest food, ward off infections, and can even help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Probiotics are a class of these beneficial bacteria — mostly commonly found in yogurt, aged cheeses, and fermented soy products. And a new analysis of nine studies has found that people who eat such foods have lower blood pressure levels, and a lower risk of heart attack, than those who don’t.

Robert Newman, a certified nutritionist and wellness expert from East Northport, N.Y., tells Newsmax Health the new study found most blood pressure reductions were modest. But the new research is only the latest in a series of studies that have found probiotics can be important to maintaining good health and fighting off disease.

San Diego Cab Drivers Cry Foul Over Body Odor Test

SAN DIEGO – Body odor is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination.

For years, inspectors with the San Diego Regional Airport Authority run down their checklist for each cabbie -- proof of insurance, functioning windshield wipers, adequate tire treads, good brakes. Drivers are graded pass, fail or needs fixing.

Anyone who flunks the smell test is told to change before picking up another customer.

Leaders of the United Taxi Workers of San Diego union say the litmus perpetuates a stereotype that predominantly foreign-born taxi drivers smell bad. A 2013 survey of 331 drivers by San Diego State University and Center on Policy Initiatives found 94 percent were immigrants and 65 percent were from East Africa.

Sorry Mr. President, ISIS Is 100 Percent Islamic

In a televised address on how to address the Islamic State this evening, President Barack Obama declared the organization variously known as ISIS or ISIL to be “not Islamic.”

In making this preposterous claim, Obama joins his two immediate predecessors in pronouncing on what is not Islamic. Bill Clinton called the Taliban treatment of women and children “a terrible perversion of Islam.” George W. Bush deemed that 9/11 and other acts of violence against innocents “violate the fundamental tenets of the Islamic faith.”

None of the three has any basis for such assertions. To state the obvious: As non-Muslims and politicians, rather than Muslims and scholars, they are in no position to declare what is Islamic and what is not. As Bernard Lewis, a leading American authority of Islam, notes: “It is surely presumptuous for those who are not Muslims to say what is orthodox and what is heretical in Islam.”

Indeed, Obama compounds his predecessors’ errors and goes further: Clinton and Bush merely described certain actions (treatment of women and children, acts of violence against innocents) as un-Islamic, but Obama has dared to declare an entire organization (and quasi-state) to be “not Islamic.”

Why Didn't Ray Rice Get the Richie Incognito Treatment Right Away?

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell offers sympathy to an assaulter but pariah status for a bully.

Richie Incognito, an All-Pro offensive lineman, was branded a thug, faced countless hours of interrogation by league officials and their lawyers, and now can’t get a job in the NFL because he was found guilty of “bullying” a fellow lineman of equal size and strength.

Ray Rice, an All-Pro running back, was suspended for a mere two games, faced no similar league inquisition, and was heralded by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as a decent guy who made a simple “mistake” when he was caught on video dragging his unconscious fiancĂ©e out of the elevator after what appeared to be a physical altercation.

Welcome to political correctness, Goodell-style.

Mommy Blogger: ‘Why I Want My Sons to See Me Naked’

In a blog posted on the front page of The Huffington Post, blogger Rita Templeton reveals that she wants her four “relatively young” sons to see her naked.

Why? Because, she claims, if she doesn’t show them her naked body then “their first images of a naked woman” could be the “impossibly perfect physiques in those magazines or those movies.”

“And what woman could ever live up to them?” Templeton asks.

Dem Rep: ObamaCare Doubled My Insurance Costs

Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) reported that his insurance and deductible have doubled since he signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during a hearing by the House Committee on Rules on Tuesday.

After Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) stated “I’m on ObamaCare ... my plan is twice as expensive, and the deductible is twice as much,” Green responded, “That’s my experience also.”

In 2013, Green criticized Republican attempts to repeal ObamaCare, saying the ACA “will help not only the millions of uninsured but also everyone with health insurance because the ACA improves coverage.”

Does the Democratic power broker Chaka Fattah run a crime family?

In late August, a great crack resounded across Philadelphia’s Democratic establishment when Gregory Naylor, a prominent political consultant, entered aguilty plea in federal court, implicating not only himself but also a U.S. congressman and several of his key allies in a sordid and complex fraud scheme involving taxpayer dollars and campaign finances.

The plea memorandum mentions only “Elected Official A,” but numerous details corroborate the identity of Representative Chaka Fattah, one of the most powerful men in Philadelphia. The son of a vocal black nationalist activist, Fattah cut his teeth in politics in the late 1970s when he was just 22, running with a friend for election to the city commission. Though he lost that election, Fattah learned a valuable lesson about political organization and spent the subsequent decades building one of the most effective political machines in Philly, an effort that eventually won him not only local prestige but also ten terms in Congress.

Police Chief Admits She Was ‘Shocked’ When She Saw Video Showing How Officer Handled This Situation

The police chief of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., has announced a formal investigation into an incident where a officer violated a policy allowing citizens to freely video record police activity.

Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said she was “shocked” when she saw how the officer responded to a man recording an arrest. Further, she said there is “no excuse fro an officer to be unaware” of the department’s policy on the public’s right to film officers.

Andrew Heining recently posted video of police physically restraining a man outside of a public library earlier this month. His video doesn’t capture what sparked the incident, but he decided to record the actual arrest occurring from a distance.

Dem Attempt to Amend Bill of Rights Dies in Senate

Fifty-four Senate Democrats voted on Thursday to amend the Bill of Rights for the first time in American history.

The proposed constitutional amendment, which would dramatically curtail American free speech rights, fell short of the 60 votes it needed to advance. The vote split along party lines.

The measure would have empowered Congress to “regulate and set reasonable limits on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections.”

Its critics said that would amount to a de facto repeal of First Amendment protections for the purposes of political speech.

OCPD Soliciting Business Owners For TEAP

(Sept. 12, 2014) With bikers in town this weekend, and the annual congregation of VW enthusiasts slated to start in less than two weeks, the Ocean City Police Department is soliciting city businesses for what is being called the Trespass Enforcement Authorization Program [TEAP].

Normally, police are only allowed to enforce a civil action, such as trespassing, if they receive a complaint from the property’s owner. But since many resort owners are absentees, this creates an enforcement problem for motor-related events.

Complaints from residents about drivers and riders congregating in unused parking lots – where they drink heavily and harass passers-by – have been on the rise.

But under section 58-81 of the city’s code, property owners are allowed to sign an affidavit allowing the OCPD to act as their agents and investigate the activity of any person located on the property who they suspect to be trespassing – even if no specific complaint has been received.

California State Sen Gets Jail in Voter Fraud Case

A California state senator convicted on eight felony counts of perjury and voter fraud was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Friday in one of three ethics scandals involving Democratic lawmakers in the most populous U.S. state.

Senator Roderick Wright of Los Angeles was convicted in January of lying about whether he lived in the district he sought to represent, the first in a string of criminal proceedings against three state senators this year that effectively cost Democrats their two-thirds majority in the California Senate.

"This is not what I call a victimless crime," said Judge Kathleen Kennedy, who denied Wright's request for a new trial in Los Angeles Superior Court.

She said Wright was no longer eligible to hold elective office in California.

Neither Wright nor his attorney spoke to the media after the proceeding.

Officer Charged In Dog Death Wants Charges Dropped

Attorneys for a Baltimore police officer accused of cutting a dog's throat are asking a judge to dismiss the animal cruelty charge against him.

Officer Jeffrey Bolger had tried for an hour to restrain the dog, a Shar Pei named Nala, after she ran away from her owner and reportedly bit a pregnant woman outside of a bar in Baltimore, Bolger's attorneys wrote in a motion to dismiss filed Thursday. The lawyers argue that because the dog attacked a person and the officer was unable to subdue the animal, Bolger was authorized to "euthanize" her.

Bolger, 49, has been suspended without pay.

The lawyers also say prosecutors failed to establish probable cause for the charges against Bolger because no preliminary hearing was held. They also argue that Baltimore Police pursued charges against Bolger to protect "senior staff," who lawyers say failed to properly train Bolger and did not outfit him and his partner with the equipment necessary to handle the situation. The motion states that the officers did not have a dog carrier or any sedatives on hand.

Mysterious EV-D68: Vaccinated Children Could Be More Vulnerable

Unvaccinated children appear to be immune to the mysterious virus currently spreading in the Midwest

The mysterious virus known as EV-D68 has spread across the Midwest at a rapid rate. Many children have been hospitalized with the virus, about 475 in Kansas City alone, and there is no known vaccine to lessen the effects of the virus or protect those that have yet to acquire it.

EV-D68 has created an outbreak in Colorado, Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, and four more states in the Midwest. The symptoms can mimic those of the influenza virus, but can have a much more dire impact on those that fall ill. Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, the hospital’s division director for infectious disease shared her concern with CNN.

“It’s worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I’ve practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this,”

Berlin Trail Network Effort Gets Boost With $30K State Grant

BERLIN — The State of Maryland announced $2.3 million in Bikeway Program grants this week, including a $30,000 slice to go toward Berlin’s planned Walkable, Bikeable trail network.

The grant will be used to fund preliminary engineering work, and supporters of Walkable, Bikeable consider the money a solid foundation to build from.

The goal is to connect Berlin to Assateague and several surrounding areas with a trail system that would promote outdoor activity.

“We have tons of recreational opportunities for people to bike when you consider Assateague and West Ocean City and the various parks,” said Berlin Mayor Gee Williams. “We have a very natural area where this should develop.”

5 Pinocchio's for Jim Mathias

5 Pinocchio's for Jim Mathias
“Capitulating verses Negotiating”
by Delegate Mike McDermott
It is not unusual for a politician to stand up and take credit for something they did not do. I have talked about the “posers” with those big checks before; but this week, Jim Mathias crossed a line when he stood up and took credit for the return of millions in local slot revenues  to Worcester County when nothing could be further from the truth.
When slots were first authorized in Maryland, Mathias was a delegate. He was elected and quoted on the record that he would not support or vote for slots. Yet, during the 2007 Special Session, he changed his mind, and his vote became the deciding vote when he voted for gambling in Maryland. The bill required Worcester County to fork over a million dollars a year to Baltimore City and another cool million bucks to Prince Georges County from the local government proceeds that would have stayed on the shore. Search if you like, but you will find no attempt to strike this payoff from the bill. (This has cost the lower shore millions of dollars in lost revenue since it passed).
When Mathias got back home, this pay off was soon discovered by local leaders and brought up in the press. When he was questioned about it, he claimed he did not know it was in the bill.
I’m not buying it.  After all, this bill was passed in a Special Session and was the sole piece of legislation they needed to consider. It should have been fought and eliminated; particularly if you were willing to cast the deciding 71st vote for a bill that would impact your jurisdiction significantly.
For several years, Worcester County and Ocean Downs Casino have been paying off Baltimore City and Prince Georges County.  All of that money could (and should) have been utilized for local spending. When I was elected in 2010, I was keenly aware of this wealth transfer and I looked for a mechanism to bring it back home where it belonged.
That opportunity presented itself in 2012 during our  2nd Special Session when the expansion of gaming was being sought. The issue was no longer about whether or not we would have gambling, rather it was about allowing a 6th casino to be built in Prince Georges County at National Harbor.  Gambling was no longer the issue.
This bill originated in the Senate and once again, I noticed that the payoffs to Baltimore City and Prince Georges County were still embedded in the legislation. There was no attempt by Mathias to remove these provisions from the bill.
When the bill arrived in the House, the Democrats were hunting for insurance votes to pass the bill.  I took advantage of the situation and spoke to the leader on the bill about the possibility of my supporting it. My demand was straightforward: return the local impact money to the citizens where the casinos are located. Depending on revenues, this could amount to $2 million each year that would remain on the lower shore.
To our benefit, they agreed to amend the bill and cut out the funding for Baltimore City and Prince Georges County as soon as Baltimore’s casino was open for business. In turn, I cast a deciding vote for the National Harbor expansion. The amendment was introduced by Delegate Dave Rudolph (D-Cecil) whose county also benefited directly from these local impact grants staying on the Upper Shore in Cecil County.
I could not help but see the irony of these two separate votes from two Delegates representing the same area:
  • Mathias casts the deciding vote that brings gambling to Maryland, establishes a casino in Ocean City’s backyard, and agrees to give Baltimore City and Prince Georges County $2 million of our money every year.

  • I cast the deciding vote that expands gambling to Prince George County alone and only after seeing the bill amended to strip Baltimore City and Prince Georges County from receiving one dime of our local impact money (returning $2 million to the Eastern Shore).
In a press release this past week, Mathias earned himself 5 Pinocchio's when he took credit “for amending the legislation passed in 2012 which returned the money to Worcester County. This represents a complete and utter falsehood.

The reporter took his word for it.  I do not believe the voters will be as trusting come November.

5 Annoying Realities Of Being A Female Sports Fan During Football Season

Whether it’s college or professional football, all is finally right with the world again.

This is the season where Sundays become just as fun as Friday nights, and the beers, wings and pizza are limitless.

Regardless of whom you are, watching football is a great American pastime that has brought together families and friends for decades. However, with all the joy football brings, if you’re a female sports fan, be ready for some hardships.

Newsflash: It is possible to be a woman AND know about sports. Sorry, boys, we’re leaving the kitchen and spending our Sundays on the couch.

So, all of my fellow sports fanatics, I present to you the five most annoying things about being a female sports fan.
1. We are capable of being into sports for reasons beyond impressing some guy.

Nothing — I repeat, nothing — is more aggravating than being asked, “Who’s the guy you’re trying to impress?” after stating you like watching sports. Equally as annoying is when people only ask whom we think is “cute” on the team.

We can enjoy sports simply for ourselves — no man necessary.

Deutsche Bank: The Bubble Must Go On To Sustain The "Current Global Financial System"

When all is said and done, it all basically boils down to this: from Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid.

The bubble probably needs to continue in order to sustain the current global financial system and the necessary future deleveraging. However with yields moving ever lower in many parts of the world in recent times, partly due to weak growth, and with debt levels still moving higher, the chances are that most government bondholders are unlikely to achieve a positive real return over the medium to long-term from this starting point. Inflation or even the risk of sovereign restructuring will likely prevent this.

So there you have it: either the bubble goes on, or the "current global financial system" gets it.

What is left unsaid is that it is only the "1%" who benefits from the bubble. The wealth and income of everyone else gets progressively less, as even the Fed has been forced to admit, until there is nothing left. And should the bubble burst? Why the central banks will just reflate yet another bubble, which translated in lay man's terms means steal even more from the global middle class and give to the world's richest.

The Simple Truth About QE

There’s not a single day that we’re not treated to more smart treats about stimulus measures. Are they necessary, are they good, are they bad, who profits from them. It gets really long in the tooth. Today, former ECB head Trichet says unlimited stimulus ‘risks’ blowing bubbles. “Supplying unlimited amounts of liquidity at interest rates close to zero has “unintended counterproductive consequences.”

Does Jean-Claude really mean to claim he just figured that one out now? Why else did he never say it before? There are 1001 other wise guys like Trichet who’ve only recently seen a sliver of light, and see fit to make the great unwashed party to their new found wisdom. And they’re the vanguard, all the rest still sit on their asses.

The simple truth about ultra low interest rates is so simple it’s embarrassing, at least for those who claim they benefit society. That is, ultra low rates make borrowing accessible to the wrong people, and to the right people for the wrong reasons. The former are people who shouldn’t be able to borrow a dime, because they have no credit credibility, the latter borrow only for unproductive or counter-productive reasons.

Forecast March-2015 Solar Eclipse Has Power Grid Operators Distressed…”Dangerously Destabilized”

One thing we can be predicted with very high certainty: On March, 20, 2015 most of Germany will see a partial yet substantial eclipse of the sun.

40 gigawatts of rated power blocked in just minutes!

Normally that would be no big deal. But for the first time in history, due to Germany’s massive installed solar capacity of 40 gigawatts, an eclipse of the sun could mean a collapse of Germany’s intense power grid, with possible ramifications for the European power network.

Today’s print edition of Spiegel features an entire story on the coming event, should skies be clear. At it’s online site here it gives a preview of the upcoming event, writing:

The German power grid operators are dreading March 20, 2015. On this day Germany will see a partial solar eclipse during the morning. Should there be no clouds in the sky at this time, all solar power generating systems all over the country would be feeding in drastically less power into the grid in just a matter of minutes – and the grids would become dangerously destabilized.”

DC BIKER 9/11 ORGANIZER THREATENED WITH ARREST BY PARKS SERVICE POLICE

An annual motorcycle rally intended to honor the victims of 9/11 and military veterans almost did not happen on Thursday when U.S. Park Services threatened to yank their permits and tow the motorcycles parked on the mall.

“The way the parks people talked to us and took my picture like I’m some sort of criminal was disgusting. We were basically threatened several times with pulling the permits at the last minute,” Belinda Bee, a national organizer for the 2 Million Bikers to DC told Breitbart News. “And everything they said that wasn’t on the permit, I pulled the permit out and showed them where it was.”

Bee added, “They tried to deny the 9/11 still memorial, which is on the permit. They tried to deny all of the stage and the truck. That’s on the permit.”

As bikers rolled up on to DC’s mall and parked on the grassy perimeter, Bee took to the stage and told attendees she was being threatened with arrest by U.S. Park Service Officers, because riders parked on the gravel and the grass.

A study's recommendation: Walk more, the New York Timesreports. In a study out this month, a researcher had two groups of students take in 75 grams of fructose daily, corresponding to a typical American eating style. At the same time, she called on the students to cut their intake of calories not from fructose, helping them to avoid gaining weight.

Why Obama’s Whig History Is All Wrong

Advances in human freedom are not inevitable.

‘The currents of history ebb and flow,” President Obama submitted this morning in Tallinn, Estonia. “But over time, they flow toward freedom.” This, it seems, is a favored formulation of our 44th president. Pontificating on the current state of the world, Obama is fond of chastising those actors who meet with his disapprobation by passively informing them that they are, in a cosmic sense, “wrong,” and that their behavior is incommensurate with the spirit of the era. The Islamic State, Obama has proposed “has no place in the 21st century.” Russia, meanwhile, is operating in both Crimea and Ukraine “on the wrong side of history.” At home and abroad, the president returns to this theme incessantly. “The arc of the moral universe is long,” he likes to intone, “but it bends toward justice.”

Bob Woodward: Obama Has Completely Alienated Senate Democrats

On "Fox News Sunday," The Washington Post's Bob Woodward described what he called "one of the untold stories," in Washington D.C., which is the "alienation between Obama and Senate Democrats" because according to Woodward "he is not engaged" and refuses to listen.

Woodward said, "Well, he's got to engage in the process. and he is not engaged."

He continued, "For instance on Tuesday he's going to have the congressional leaders down to the White House. Is it going to be everyone states their point of view and the meeting lasts an hour, maybe two hours? He needs to have some head to head discussions with people."

"The president needs to learn to listen," Woodward said. "These people have points of view and there are ways to work. I mean, he won't do a deal on lots of things. This is something -- this is a serious ISIS, serious national security threat. Talk to the intel people and they are trembling about it, and so it's not something you can just do all by yourself. You need to get the congress and you need to get the public involved."

More People Want to Cut the Cable Cord

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The number of people wielding scissors over their cable cord is growing, although they are still a fraction of overall viewers. Some 2.9% of pay TV consumers are "very likely" to cancel their pay TV in the year ahead, rising for the fourth consecutive year, according to data released Thursday by consulting firm Frank N. Magid Associates. This is up slightly from 2.7% last year and up from 2.2% two years ago. Younger viewers are most likely to cut the cord (4.9%) and sports viewers -- or those who have an ESPN DIS, +0.50% subscription -- are least likely (1.4%) to go without cable. "These are very small numbers in terms of future cord cutting from American consumers," says Mike Vorhaus, president of Magid Advisors.

NFL: Richer than Ever, Despite Controversy

The NFL is raking in more money than ever: $10.5 billion in 2013, with no sign of slowing down.

Regardless of how the controversy surrounding Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Riceshakes out, the NFL has already locked in broadcast rights fees of about $5.1 billion for this year from CBS (CBS), 21st Century Fox (FOX), NBC and ESPN.

That's up about $900 million from the 2013 season, and broadcast deals are growing richer as advertisers scramble to find shows -- like football games -- that viewers still want to watch live, commercials and all.

Additionally, DirecTV (DTV) pays $1 billion a year deal to show all out of market games to fans nationwide. That deal expires this season, and the new agreement is sure to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars more.

NFL games consistently garner some of the best ratings of any program on TV.

Nationally, 780,000 pounds (390 tons) of prescription medications were collected from members of the public. US Foreclosure Activity Rises for 2nd Straight Month

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - U.S. foreclosure activity jumped in August for the second consecutive month as banks started the process on more properties and scheduled more housing auctions, industry firm RealtyTrac said on Thursday.

Overall, 116,913 properties were at some stage of the foreclosure process, which includes foreclosure notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions, the group said.

That pushed overall activity up 7 percent from July, it said. From a year ago, foreclosure activity was down 9 percent.

Lenders started the foreclosure process on about 55,000 properties in August, up 12 percent from July, but unchanged from a year ago. It was the second consecutive month in which foreclosure starts were up month-over-month.

A total of 51,192 properties were set for foreclosure auctions last month, a 1 percent drop from July but up 1 percent from a year ago, ending a 44-month streak of annual decreases.

Fight, or Flight? Basic Self-Defense Tips

An emergency situation triggers what is called the fight or flight response. Adrenaline flows, increasing one’s heart rate and the amount of blood flowing to the muscles; a caffeine-free performance boost, if you will. In a face-to-face meeting with an intruder or criminal, this normal physiological reaction is advantageous. The important thing to remember is to make a decision. Rather than freeze, paralyzed by fear, use this natural chemical response to respond. For this entry, we’ll say that “fight” is the most realistic of the two options.

Focus on disabling the opponent long enough to: 1) allow for an escape and 2) call for the authorities. Heroics lead to trouble; find a moderate balance between speed and strength, as the old saying lies appropriate: float like a butterfly, and sting like a bee. Keep moving, and move quickly. Combine this with some basic technical knowledge, and you’ll have a fighting chance.

Salisbury Council Agrees On Five-District Format

SALISBURY – After three years of mapping, the Salisbury City Council approved moving to five municipal election districts starting next year.

The council held a public hearing this week in considering adopting a resolution that would amend the City Charter to create five new election districts to replace the existing two election districts. One council member would be elected from each district.

According to City Administrator Tom Stevenson, the amendment would provide for five districts with two encompassing a majority-minority population.

The resolution states, “beginning with the election of November 2015, the City Council has determined that it is in the best interest of the citizens of Salisbury to create five new Council Districts to replace the existing two Council Districts, pursuant to the 2010 Census, and to elect one councilmember from each district.”

SC House Speaker Bobby Harrell indicted

COLUMBIA - House Speaker Bobby Harrell used his campaign account for tens of thousands of dollars in personal expenses, prosecutors alleged today in a nine-count indictment.

Harrell used more than $70,000 for salary paid to an administrative assistant for his insurance business, and used the campaign account "to pay credit card debt and to pay for goods or services for his home, family and friends that were not for any purposes related to his campaign for or position in the South Carolina House of Representatives," the indictment by a Richland County grand jury alleges.

The indictment also alleges a series of reimbursements Harrell made to himself for non-existent trips.

Harrell, leader of the House since 2005, has previously denied any wrongdoing.
