Feds Pushing States To Lower The Drunk Driving Threshold To 0.05 BAC

Having a glass of wine with dinner and thinking about driving? That might be a bit more of a gamble in the future, as the National Transportation Safety Board is lobbying states to reduce their thresholds for drunk driving from the national standard of 0.08 blood alcohol concentration to 0.05.

Members of the board presented their case this week in New England, reports WTKR.com, saying the new standard could help save lives.

“If you are impaired and behind the wheel, you should not be driving,” said an attorney with the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

  2. I would prefer .01, anything over .08 is life sentence for attempted mass murder.

  4. it is amazing how we have all lived this long and survived before all these laws to make us 'safe' came to be.

People have obeyed the new limits. Revenue must be down so they now have to lower the limits again to get revenue up.

I don't condone drunk driving at all, as most do not. But call it what it is.

  6. It has never been about "protecting people".

The public has learned not to drive after drinking (for the most part).

Now they need to lower the limit so they can scoop up more of us.

Same with speed laws. If we all "obey" the speed limits (suggestions for safety) then they will lower the limits.

    The need our money.

    You are joking right?

I mean, if someone is hurt or killed then a person should answer for it.

But we are talking about the illegal search and seizure of our body fluids on the side of the road. We are talking about violations of our rights (when there has been NO victims).

  11. They must know that people with diabetes and high blood sugar can easily blow that without ever having consumed a drop of alcohol.
High blood sugar causes ketoacidosis which creates acetone which is detected on brethalyzers. It would be hard now to hit .08 on the acetone false positive but the lower they drop the limit the easier it would be.

I'm coining the term DWD (driving while diabetic)

  12. This BS has nothing what so ever to do with intoxicated persons operating an automobile, and everything to do with more revenue.
Fines & fees are what this is about, no different then taxing cigarettes. The entire scenario has a decreasing return built into it, so they have to do something. And, that something is lower the level that one is 'assumed' to be impaired. It's simple math and political science.
P.S. I don't drink, so I'm not biased on this, either.
