Fast food workers plan nationwide strike on Thursday

Thousands of fast food workers across the United States will once again go on strike this Thursday, representatives of the Fight for 15 movement announced Monday night. The new strike will likely be comparable in size to the last one, which occurred in mid-May and affected fast food restaurants in 150 U.S. cities. But unlike any previous strikes in the fast food industry, Thursday’s action is likely to feature acts of civil disobedience in at least a handful of cities. If workers do risk arrest on Thursday, that would represent a significant escalation in movement tactics and militancy.

“If workers do risk arrest on Thursday, that would represent a significant escalation in movement tactics and militancy.”

This week’s strike will be the first major fast food worker action since the first-ever Fight for 15 convention, which took place in late July. Many of the workers who attended the conference expressed a desire to escalate the campaign, and a handful of scheduled speakers extolled the virtues of civil disobedience. At the end of the convention, workers agreed to a resolution saying they would do “whatever it takes” to win.

Terrence Wise, a Missouri-based Burger King employee and a member of the Fight for 15 national organizing committee, cited that resolution in a statement regarding Thursday’s upcoming strike.

  1. If they don't like their starter, low level jobs they should quit and work somewhere else. If they do not have the skills to get a better job that's their problem. Should have studied harder in school.

  2. Both ends playing against the middle. You can't have higher pay without raising food prices and I personally go wherever there is a $1 menu.

  3. The only reason they want to raise minimum wage is so they can earn votes and tax these people more. The burden of payment falls upon companies who will either raise their prices or close/downsize. Soon none of us will afford eating at McDonalds. Its OK because the government will earn more from taxes courtesy of the companies and taxpayers.

  14. There are no people to replace the minimum wage earners. These folks have real power.

Many many Americans do not work at all. They eat at McDonald's but will not work there. They don't have a need to work.

Many folks enjoy the benefits of just "being" in America. The social benefits (so long as you reproduce) is quite attractive. It is hard to get them to work.

  15. I already know what the fast food business is going to do with the strikers. They're going to fire them. In the current economy even a minimum wage job will have employees. People who want fast food jobs are the following: High schoolers, Homeless, and lower education individuals who wants to work and is currently unemployed. The fast food business has people lining up for jobs because I have seen it I go to high school and when I talk to people about jobs about 15 people are applying for the same job and they're hired only one or two persons.

  16. Bottom line is that blacks know that Obama is going to grant amnesty to illegal Mexicans and they will work for $6 bucks an hour. So black people who thought Obama would do positive things for them are now feeling the squeeze. Serves them right for being so racists.

  18. I'm sure most of the U.S. doesn't care about this issue.
The only people it will affect are the low income , fat , ebt card users.
If they closed all these units , so what , we would just have more Hispanics to cut grass.
    Ain't that right Shanie?
