Hogan: End State Income Taxes On Police Pensions

Republican Larry Hogan is pledging to eliminate the state income tax on law-enforcement pensions, if he is elected governor.

Hogan is making the proposal Tuesday. He is speaking to the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police in Solomons, Maryland.

Hogan's campaign estimates the proposal would cost about $10 million annually. He believes the cost would be more than offset by encouraging former police to stay in Maryland when they retire and continue to contribute to the local and state economy.

  1. B. S. What about the department of corrections on the county and state level? Which department is going to be cut or increase for this to happens on behalf of the police department? You guys keep forgetting who actually have to supervise and take care of criminals after the cops are done with them. What are you trying to do, make a real police state?

  2. I'm not so sure about this either though it would put a ton of money back into circulation in the local economies.

  5. NO WAY. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. All pensions and retirement funds or none. Everybody pitched in to do their part to make a civil society, and no one should have any privilege over the other in retirement. We worked every bit as hard as they did.

  6. Correction will never get any recognition until better hiring g standards are adopted, physical, mental, and better backgrounds.

  7. How about the rest of the retires, what makes the police more important than others.

  8. Everyone knows republicans do not rule Maryland. As much as I hate to admit it Brown will when because he is a democrat. Sad but true so this is a mute issue

  12. I disagree with this. They already get discounts at many places. They also get a tax break. Many people don't even get a pension and the ones that do will still be taxed on theirs. Im tired of certain people getting special attention. Level the playing field on everyone.

  14. Here's a copy of the email I just sent Larry Hogan.

I don't know what you think you said Larry, but what we pensioners heard was favoritism to a group of people that are fast losing favor among regular Marylanders and Americans in general, those they are supposed to 'protect and serve'. What we heard, Larry, was that you are a proponent of and condone acts like those happening in Ferguson Missouri. What we heard, Larry was you saying you approve of the militarization of the civil police forces. What we heard, Larry, was that you would have law enforcement murder innocent citizens and their pets and give them a bonus for it when they retire.
I also don't know how many votes you think you garnered with a statement like this but I, for one, can assure you that you lost more. And, I'm one of them. I'd rather have a Democrat governor stealing from all of us then a Republican governor who would further the blossoming police state and steal from me to serve them.

  16. The problem with Corrections is that the state CO's should fall under the Maryland State Police and they should take the full police academy training and become sworn officers. There is so much corruption in the Maryland Department of Corrections and that is because the leadership is Democrat. Clean house and put them all under the Department of Public Safety.

While you are at it get rid of the rest of the "State" police agencies like the Maryland Natural Resources Police, The Maryland Transit Authority Police, the Maryland Transportation Police, the Park Police, the Capital Police, the University Police, etc. Why in the world does the government allow all of these police agencies in the State of Maryland with over paid department heads.

Make all of these police agencies fall under the Maryland State Police. It can be done and it should be done. This is called streamlining and it is done to get rid of the overpaid chiefs and put more Indians on the streets.

  17. I don't know what the pension taxation laws are currently. However, I don't think ANYONE's pension needs to be taxed. Govt needs to just leave people the hell alone.

  18. Reference to 2:06 Posting AM Posting

And while we are at it, why don't we waive their REAL ESTATE TAXES, SALE TAXES, AND VEHICLE TAG FEES.

Let's face it folks, the ordinary taxpayers have become slaves to run-a-way political system.

  19. This is ridiculous. The school teacher's union lobbied to have the teachers exempted from paying real estate taxes a couple of years ago. Tell me this, where is the shortfall of revenue going to come from by exempting out these special situations....it will come out of taxpayer's asses. All we hear from the local governments is that they're broke and need more revenue. Cities all over this country are already going broke from legacy/pension commitments. Why in the world would you propose something that would create less revenue. Besides, some of those guys make a lot of money anyway. Hogan--a total Rhino. Would not vote for him just because of this.

  20. Wake up folks. The world has changed. Most companies don't even offer retirement/pensions anymore in the private sector. I work in a job that has ZERO retirement. My future is paid by no one. I only get paid for what I do. So now you want private citizens to fit the bill for the pensions, AND, the taxes on those pensions. This is crap. The least they can do is pay their own f---king taxes. Politicians are screwing over average people. Larry Hogan you are no republican.
