A Letter To The Editor: WBOC Mekia Turner comment on Bob McDonnell 7:00 pm news 7/28/14

I couldn't believe what I was hearing when she described the scene as Bob and Maureen McDonnell were walking to the courthouse. He kept his head up, "and smile plastered on it"! How unprofessional and disrespectful. The man hasn't been proven guilty of anything. I immediately called to complain. I spoke with Rachel Ray, a producer. She said Mekia would've written it, but a producer would have to approve it. Rachel did not produce it. I know the liberalism out there, but this was blatant disrespect. I hope you can check into it (maybe just catch it on the 11:00 broadcast). They both need to be reprimanded. Who do they think they are? Does Greg Jahelka know who's working for him, or does he agree with them?

Thanks

  5. should be reprimanded harshly. no excuse for this. very unprofessional.

I know this happens more often than not, but there's still no excuse.

  6. I agree. A simple "He was smiling as he walked into the courthouse" would have been fine. The "plastered" reeks of unprofessionalism and immaturity. Those even slightly versed in the English language, as well as journalism, should know you never use a word figuratively in formal verse.

  7. What does her use of the word "plastered" have to do with liberalism? No, she should have not used that word, but there's nothing liberal or conservative about it.

  8. All the teleprompter readers at WBOC have smiles plastered on their faces, too.

I don't know if Gov. McDonnell or his wife broke the law.

I do believe his successor is infinitely more guilty of a wide range of misdeeds. Poor, poor Virgina to have elected such as him!

  10. 11:46 in and of itself the word plastered doesn't have any liberal or conservative bias.
Since Gov. McDonnell is recognized as being a conservative then the use of any pejorative adjective would generally be used by a liberal speaker or writer.
Just as if a Fox News reporter had said President Obama was on the golf course this weekend with a smile plastered all over his face. You wouldn't hear that description used on MSNBC.
Descriptive words and knowledge of the subject is how people generally determine a bias in the written or spoken word. In journalism a reporter is not supposed to use pejorative descriptive terms.

  12. My suspicion is that Mikea was not in Richmond actually reporting, but voiced-over another correspondent's copy to make it look like a "Delmarva News Leader" report. It was probably written that way in the original copy.

Take a look at other stories they "produce" where the WBOC reporter's voice is used, but in the video there is another correspondent and another ID on the microphone.
