D.C. Residents Urged To Boycott Md. Shore To Protest Congressman’s Marijuana Move

If you’re a District resident planning to vacation in the Maryland havens of Ocean City or St. Michaels this summer, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and some D.C. activists would prefer you choose Rehoboth Beach, Del., or Chincoteague Island, Va., instead.

A week after Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) successfully attached an amendment to a House budget bill that would overturn the city’s marijuana decriminalization law, Gray and the District’s largest voting-rights advocacy group said city residents would be better off vacationing somewhere besides Harris’s district, which includes all of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“I don’t think we should support someone who doesn’t support us, who doesn’t support democracy, period,” the mayor said Wednesday after a news conference at which he decried Harris’s actions as “hypocrisy at its worst.”

  3. I guess Mayor Gray has forgotten that weed is still illegal under federal statutes....it shouldn't be legalized by states or Districts.....

  9. slightly immature move by the dc folks, but then again, why is Harris wasting time with the marijuana amendment in the first place?? Guess small government and freedom of choice stops when you do something he doesn't agree with. Not to mention, I don't think the amendment does too much to address jobs, national debt, or security. Just sayin.....

  10. I agree, DONT COME HERE, this place is horrible, stay away!

  11. That's great news! Since most of the crime in MD comes from the DC area, this will lessen the problems in OC.

Just because you are dying to be a pothead doesn't mean Congressman Harris is doing the wrong thing.

  13. Every one has great ideas about those liberal dingbats in DC. I am not sure if the local beach shops take EBT cards? They all might be wasting their times unless they sell their EBT cards for cash.

  14. I dont mind dc folks staying away but pot should be legal. harris is wrong on that one.

  16. If they think Chincoteague will approve of the new "pot head" laws; they're in for a rude awakening. It will NEVER happen...

  17. Oh yes, it's absolutely awful here - don't come here, you won't like it and you won't be happy - stay away forever DC residents - this isn't the place for you. Go to North Carolina or somewhere but don't come here

  18. That means OC's crime rate will now be lower.

  19. Who is Harris representing? Is his next move a bill to stop jaywalking in Montana?
I would think he has enough on his plate right here in his own jurisdiction to keep him busy for the 4 hours a day he works, for a few months each year.
He has time to propose legislation for OTHER jurisdictions??
I'm not debating the right or wrong here, I'm questioning the time our representative has spent writing, evaluating, and submitting (and the associated ace-kissing he's spent on it), legislation concerning the actions and behavior of people he DOESN'T represent.
Is he really aware of his job description?
Oh. He's your guy. My bad.

  20. Perhaps Mayor Gray was channeling his predecessor Marion (Crack)Barry.

In his lucid moments the mayor should realize that Congress oversees DC and the amendment was appropriate to have the District conform to US law.

Der Choomhead will probably try to issue an executive order permitting the weed so as not to alter his habits.

  21. I guess since he has got the unemployment numbers down he has time to work on this stuff.

Have news for you, whether these laws are implemented or not, it doesn't affect people smoking. It's everywhere. Failure to decriminalize only encourages the illegal drug trade. There are plenty of idiots who give it a bad name, but there are also plenty of intelligent and successful people who smoke. The view that anyone who does is on public assistance, or unemployed, or is a career criminal is nothing more than an asinine stereotype shared by far too many. And nobody cares what the Mayor of DC or anybody else said on this issue, it will have absolutely zero affect on where people go or don't go, or do or don't do.

It will balance out. Any lost revenue will be made up by not 'losing' inventory, not repairing things that get broken, less police, emt's, ambulances, etc., calls and services that eat up tax monies.

I doubt anyone will go bankrupt by any loss of revenue by D.C. tourists.

Or maybe I am wrong. Let's try it a season or two and find out shall we?
