Hagerstown Expands Housing Incentive Program For Police Officers And Trainees

Hagerstown police officers and trainees in the Hagerstown Community College Police Academy who choose to reside within the city will soon be eligible for monthly housing incentives that increase based on their proximity to Public Square.

In September 2012, the city began offering a $100 monthly housing incentive to sworn officers residing within the city limits, according to city Human Resources Director Karen Paulson.

The number of officers residing within the city was seven prior to the incentive, but since has increased to 15, City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman has said.

The Hagerstown City Council agreed Tuesday to a new incentive structure, with officers and academy recruits receiving $300 in monthly housing assistance for residing within three blocks of Public Square; $200 for residing within three to six blocks of Public Square; and $100 for residing within the corporate boundary.
