A Viewer Writes: Shinn's Paint Store Closing

After 30 years in Salisbury, today Mr. Shinn laid his employees off and announced the store will be closing This Friday.

Another one bites the dust in Salisbury.

  1. There goes my Moor-Glo paint. Their Moor-Glo latex paint brand was the very best in the business. Any painter worth their salt will tell you that.

    What-a-shame they are closing.

Is there any end to the business exodus madness?

  2. There's nothing being built to paint. Re-painting is reserved for the foreclosures going up for sale. No way that can support 4 paint stores plus Ace and the two Big Boxes.

  3. 6:26 I beg to differ, if you drive around here there are several housing structures being built.

  4. Great paint, great local management, lousy ownership from Wilmington. Cindy was told Monday they would be closing Friday. This is indicative of how Shinns treated their customers, including contractors who would buy large quantities of paint. No wonder they can't survive, you reap what you sow. God be with you Cindy.

  5. I got disgusted when they didn't want anyone to park in that big parking lot unless you were going in the paint store. How community friendly was that?

  6. Hard to compete with Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. I'm surprised they were able to hang on as long as they did.

  7. The paint they sold was the best but it was also to expensive

  8. So far there's a lot of critics. Look, these people ran a business for 30 YEARS. I truly don't know why they closed up the business but they have every right to do so, no matter the conditions.

They served the community for more years than 95% of other businesses in Salisbury. People should be thanking them, not criticizing them.

The BIG question is, WHY? Is it because of economics? Minimum wage increase? Taxes? Overhead? Cost of goods today vs. the past? Because they couldn't sell the business? Because they simply wanted to retire?

No matter what the possibilities are, Salisbury and Wicomico County will lose yet another business and unemployment rates will again go up.

THAT is what YOU should be looking at. It's NOT as if 100 buinesses are going to close all at once on one particular day. It's also not as if 100 NEW businesses will be opening in one day either.

We are seeing and we have been EXPOSING exactly what is happening in Salisbury and Wicomico County, yet astute people in the County Executives Office are "scratching their heads" wondering HOW this could have happened. DUH!

Like I've said in the past. Have you EVER heard of weekly or monthly meetings between Mayor Jim Ireton and Executive Rick Pollitt to tackle this financial epidemic?
    The answer is, NO.

You see, their job is easy. Rather than having ANY business experience, they just raise taxes because they are POLITICIANS. You better make your votes count this time people.

  9. Their main office & store is in Wilmington. Why in the world would they then want to stay in MD? Do I even have to answer that question for you???

  10. I am sorry to hear this.they had good service and good products. While I always bought my paint there, unfortunately an individual only needs paint but so often. They had the best selection of wall paper around . It appears to me that those complaining about things like parking lots (no one in the area allows parking by non-customers) don't understand the loss when a locally owned business closes.

  11. I am in favor of any business that doesn't tear the previous structure down and then build a completely new one.I can't recall what was there immediately after Breyer's left, but no one tore down the original building.Even Shinns was able to modify to suit their needs.

  12. Spot on Joe,who do people think will pick up the lost taxes as these businesses close?

  13. 8:36 - I expect they will try to get the funds from those that remain...us - by raising our rates and adding new fees for stuff we're already taxed to support....

  14. people who sell paint should be able to present a better front than that awful stained wood. Pretty much a turn off for people who are about making things look better.

  15. i live close to shinns and have bought paint there for myself and some side jobs I was doing from time to time. going to miss the convenience and polite employees

  16. A real shame, great products and service. Big box stores take out another, just like all the old hardware stores.

  17. By the way, anybody who still would like to get Benjamin Moore products can get it from Easton @ Avon Decorating Center. They will deliver if you pre-arrange it. I have done it for years when Shinns didn't have products or decent pricing.

  18. Sad another business in the area is closing. I bought paint there one time, good stuff, but very expensive.

  19. That is what happens when you have a business based on the construction industry and the real estate market is in the tanks and nobody wants to move into an area as dilapidated as this one. Maybe one day you guys will stop blaming those in local government roles and start wondering why people don't want to move here. This area is a disgrace and is in a downward spiral. The revenue cap is doing what many predicted when it was enacted. Maybe Voice and such will be happy when we look like the side streets of Mexico.
