Maryland Gun Law Update

(Annapolis) -- Delegate Mike Mcdermott has been urging the Maryland State Police to take action in two areas relating to gun laws in Maryland.

7 Day Wait Period
Delegate Mike McDermott has called upon the Maryland State Police to eliminate the extensive delays now being applied to regulated firearms purchases. Current law requires a 7-day waiting period before a firearm may be transferred to another person, but the current waiting period has now exceeded 90-days and continues to grow in length.

“I have called upon Colonel Brown to assign adequate staff for the mission at hand and to work with dealers in providing reasonable discretion without the fear of incurring the wrath of this State”, said Delegate McDermott. “Law abiding citizens are being denied their Constitutional right to simply defend themselves on their own property by these unreasonable delays.”

“There are other methods to determine eligibility that are employed by the Federal Government which provide nearly instant results as to any potential disqualification of a potential purchaser,”Delegate McDermott went on to say. “We live in a technology driven world while we provide a Stone Age response time, and this is unacceptable to the people we serve.”

  1. While it is appreciated, the effort youve made....it is futile. The waiting period exceeded 90 days several months ago. The msp issued a letter last month to ffl dealers stating they could release on the 8th day. This letter came only after the multiple laws suites being filed....and only to cover their butts. Now ffl dealers refuse to comply with the law fearing any repercussions or threats to their license. Even gander mnt has gone above and beyond non-compliance by delaying the "not disapproved" paperwork arrival till they feel its convenient for them. Example: after a 90+ day wait my paperwork arrived at gander on a Friday, They purposely did not call me till late Sunday afternoon....their reason was " there were 20some applications returned Friday and WE didnt want everyone of them to come here all at one time....so WE delayed the notification over a few days..."

WHY is it only the citizens are complying with these laws and noone is being held accountable for breaking these laws?

  5. 8:11 you are wrong. the msp checks 17 databases. delegate mike has a list on his site.

even with that it should not take more the 7, even 10 days

  6. They are purposely delaying in my opinion. The wait was up to 14 weeks as of June 10 when I finally was allowed my constitutional right to defend my family. I purchased on march 1, and when I went to pick it up, they had to call the Feds and do another check because it had been so long since the original check. So basically it really only takes about ten to fifteen minutes to complete the process.

the fed check is a nics check, an ffl cannot call for that on a regulated firearm (pistol, ar15, ak47, ect) only the msp can. your dealer fibbed to you
