Council Moves Ahead With Paid Parking Areas; Mayor’s Compromise Rejected

OCEAN CITY – Despite a compromise proposed by Mayor Rick Meehan and concerns from residents and two other elected officials, the City Council majority have approved new paid parking areas for this summer.

An ordinance authorizing additional paid parking in certain areas came before the Mayor and City Council this week for its final passage. New locations include the east side of the driveway in the Public Safety Building parking lot between 65th and 66th streets, from 5 p.m.-7 a.m. on Monday-Friday, except for holidays, and all day Saturday and Sunday; City Hall parking lot, from 5 p.m.-7 a.m. on Monday-Friday, except for holidays, and all day Saturday and Sunday; on the west side of Philadelphia Ave. from 7 a.m. until midnight between N. Division St. and South First St.; 49th Street ocean block; 131st Street from Coastal Hwy. to Sinepuxent Ave.; and 146th St. ocean block.

“I have voted against this proposal from the beginning,” Councilman Brent Ashley said. “Adding more expense for the visitors that come to Ocean City with more parking meters would seem to be counterproductive to the promotion of tourism when we can least afford to lose even one visitor.”

  1. Parking meters on public streets are illegal.
    It is double taxation.
No one in O.C. wants them yet the council refuses to do the will of the people. They are willfully breaking the trust and desire of their constituents and should be subject to harsh punishment.

  2. The Town runs a golf course on about a $3M budget. They charge locals $39/person to play golf. It's a luxury. I can't understand why the Town Manager is so fixated on a nickel dime approach of squeezing a couple of cents from visitors for the "privilege" of parking. If they truly need this money, they should raise the Green Fees at Eagle's Landing. Does even an across the board cut in compensation from all the 6 figure salaried employees make sense? Of course not. The Town would rather go after a few quarters from the visitors that cause Ocean City to stay afloat.

  4. 2:53-It's because they are all worried about what they term as the "daytrippers" who may I add are mostly minorities-African Americans and Hispanics. They wouldn't dare dream of raising the golf course fees but would rather take it out on the hard working semi local people who can't afford much to begin with. Can we say their racism is showing????

  5. How about their "elitism" and "arrogance" are showing? I told you when they satrted this "proposal" that it did not matter what the citizens wanted from the people they ELECTED TO SERVE THEM. I'm starting to really get upset about being right ALL THE TIME about politicians. Ha!! Maybe YOUR guy will be able to change things, huh? Keep cheering and keep voting. It gives them the stamp of approval they want and the legitimacy they so crave....

  8. 10:09-The ones who are making these decisions are the "come heres" and it shows. Ocean City is nothing more than a cement city with a barroom on every corner.
Gone is the "tacky" quaintness and uniqueness that it once was.
